Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Um. No. See: Boston College 2008-2009.

And I don't even know if they are the first, just the most recent.

It's not that uncommon. Stacked teams with a ton of seniors and early departing underclassmen win the title, difficult to recover.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Just the most recent. I don't have the stats, and for once I actually don't feel like looking it up, but I'm pretty sure it's actually happened a bunch of times. Especially if you go back to the days when only 4 teams made the tournament.

In recent history, aside from last year's BC team, other defending national champions that failed to qualify for the NCAAs the year of their defense include:

2006-07: Wisconsin 19-18-4, lost in WCHA semifinal
2005-06: Denver 21-15-3, lost in WCHA quarterfinals
2001-02: BC 18-18-2, lost in HE quarterfinals

The 2006-07 Wisconsin team lost NHLers Joe Pavelski, Brian Elliott, Tom Gilbert, Adam Burish, not to mention Robbie Earl and Jack Skille, following the championship year.

The 2005-06 Denver team featured Hobey winner Matt Carle, along with Paul Stastny, Gabe Gauthier, and current Sabres d-man Chris Butler. Very talented team with a talented Sophomore netminder (sound familiar?) in Peter Mannino.

The 2001-02 BC team lost Brian Gionta, Krys Kolanos, Chuck Kobasew, Brooks Orpik, Scott Clemmensen, amongst others. They did have talented underclassmen in Ben Eaves, Tony Voce, Ryan Shannon and Andrew Alberts, but they lacked talent and depth amongst their Senior and Junior classes that year.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Whats the history with National Champions not making the NCAA tournament the next year. Hopefully this doesn't happen but if it does will we be the first?

When you consider that in college sports, players stay a maximum of four years, the talent level of a team can vary dramatically from year to year. This is especially true in college hockey, where the top players often leave early. And while I have not checked the numbers, I bet that underclassmen are even more likely to leave after championship seasons.

While none of this is news to anyone who follows college hockey, it is abundantly clear to just about everyone here that you do not really follow college hockey. So I figured I would explain it. [Sorry, I don't usually take shots like that. But after you inexplicably picked on Fed. League, someone to whom out-of-towners like me are greatly indebted due to his blog and reporting, I could not resist.]

dont feel bad, this guy's a clown and asked a question that 99% of people who follow BU hockey would know the answer to in about 3 seconds.

Paging TommyNobles, paging TommyNobles...

Haha sorry this took so long. Lorms is my story. She should have gotten back to campus today, and Durocher said if the media wants to talk to Lorms, we are very welcome to as long as she agrees. He doesn't have an exact term for what her injury is (neck injury, concussion etc.) because he says he just deals with sticks and pucks. The doctors do what the doctors do.
Regardless, reports right now sound good. Durocher is not quite comfortable definitively saying she will play hockey again at Boston University, but it is a definite possibility. Right now, they are just glad that it appears she will be able to lead a normal life.

In other news (maybe this is just because I'm a relatively new poster) it astounds me how touchy people get on here. I never would think there would be so much fighting and bickering between fans of the same team. With BU Terror, it's pretty understandable, but otherwise I don't understand why everybody is always jumping down each others throats. Shouldn't we be praying for a four-point weekend or rejoicing at the misfortunes of others (re: NU and UML)?

Shut it you **** ***** *******

;)
It's a long season, we root for the same team, but we're not all the same person (well butt error and calihockeyfan are but that's a story for another day) disagreements are bound to happen.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Are we gonna carry 3 upperclassmen goalies next year? Seems like we'd bring in the next wave soon instead of carrying all 3, no?

Not sure they'd bring in a good freshman netminder with Millan and Rollheiser only juniors. I suppose there's a risk Millan leaves after next season (I don't think there's any concern he'll leave this year), but even so, rotating Rollheiser with a good freshman recruit in 2011-12 doesn't seem like a worst-case scenario.

So yeah, my guess is Parker and Co. make a push for a strong goalie recruit when Millan and Rollheiser are seniors and Kraus has graduated.

Now, i know this is probably a stupid question, but i dont know the answer, and i know you all are knowledgeable about college hockey (well, ok, some of you).

Winning a conference tourney, does that give you an auto-berth to the NCAAs, like in hoops?

Yes.

As of right now, it is probably (I haven't looked at the statistics in depth) BU's only hope of getting in.

FWIW, BU was among the finalists for a top 2011 goalie, Sam Brittain (Canmore/AJHL) who committed to Denver.

I may be wrong, but I thought someone mentioned that Kraus was considered redshirted last year, so theoretically he's the same graduating class at Millan/Rollheiser (unless he finishes his courses and would rather go do non-hockey stuff).

it's not a joke, and i said i didn't know, thus why i asked the question, a**clown. god forbid i ask a question that i knew i'd get the answer to.

For future reference, a lot of basic questions can be answered on the USCHO FAQs, here's the one pertaining to tournament selection:

Or maybe you could have read thru this thread and see where it was actually mentioned maybe 10-20 times already. Just sayin'.

There is no way kraus will give up on his hockey career. He is one of those guys that will continue to pursue it even though everyone knows he isnt good enough

Good enough for D1 or not, I'm not going to complain that Kraus is in the locker room. He sounds like a great teammate and person from everything I have read. If he wants to continue for another year, I don't see how it could hurt the team.

Yeah, I don't think anybody is suggesting that they want Kraus out to clear up the roster spot. Seems like an ideal fit for a third netminder. I can tell you that, from having watched a fair amount of practices, he actually seems to be the leader among the goaltending corps, which does seem a bit odd playing time considered.

Certainly have never heard anything but praise from Parker about the guy.
