Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux of North Dakota will finally be graduating after what seemed like 30 years of them playing college hockey.
:D Truth!

Is Carpenter better than Skarupa? I think Skarupa had about the same number of points before getting hurt. Is it possible they could hurt each others chances at winning the award?

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

Nice article but winning it takes more than being a point or scoring leader. From the actual award site... "An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award is presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. Other selection criteria include outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. Consideration is also given to academic achievement and civic involvement."

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

To sum up article - counting graduations and the best players in NCAA hockey take the entire season off to train for the olympics....we might finally get some recognition/award for being the best, especially since the other player that is above ours doesn't seem to much of a threat as they play in a weaker conference....of course all of this would only happen because the USOC snubbed our player. :p

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

That's the gist of the article, though if she isn't snubbed she would be a favorite regardless her senior year :)

I know this but absent any academic or civic involvement data, I had to focus on the primary selection criteria of "top player in women's hockey."

What I took away from the article is the only chance an Eagle has to win Kaz is during an Olympic year when all the legit candidates are playing in the Olympics.

It's her *best* chance. Like I said above, she would probably be a/the favorite her senior year anyway if she doesn't get snubbed.

Carpenter may make top 10 but BC might have a hidden gem in #17 by the time she is a senior (Academic and Athletic and Leadership Excellence)

They're going to create a consolation prize exclusively for Hockey East players?

If Mercyhurst finishes 8th in the pairwise, EFF THAT.
It could be worse. If the NCAA used the Rutter Rankings instead of the PWR, you'd not only be looking at the possibility of playing Wisco' in the first round but having to travel to Madison to do it:
Code:
 	Team	Rating	RPI.Rank	RPI
1	Minnesota 3.2762 1	0.6722
2	Cornell 1.3096 2	0.6099
3	North Dakota 1.2462 7	0.5746
4	Wisconsin 1.2040 8	0.5737
5	Boston College 1.1867 3	0.6028
6	Boston University 1.1690 4	0.5947
7	Harvard 1.0328 6	0.5926
8	Clarkson 1.0094 5	0.5932

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

Looks like BC better take care of business in the Hockey East. If there are many autobids that aren't currently in top-8 is going to result in a very good team on the outside of the NCAA's.
Very true -- imagine if the #3 or #4 team in Rutter misses the tournament? Yikes.

Fortunately BC is a mathematical lock into the NCAA tournament, and a virtual lock for home ice.

Using RPI I don't think there's any way BC can play its way out of the NCAA tournament. I doubt that even losing the QF series against Maine would manage that and certainly if they advance the the Hockey East semis they're in good shape. They can't finish with less than a .667 winning percentage against TUCs and that's going to help them in almost every comparison; I'm pretty sure that Minnesota and Clarkson are the only two teams that even can finish better than that. A quick eyeballing of the PWR comparisons suggests to me that the only teams that could flip their comparison with BC are Clarkson, BU, North Dakota and Wisconsin; even if the others pass BC in RPI some combination of the other criteria would keep the comparison from flipping. And UND and Wisconsin can't both flip it.

So the worst I see BC doing is to win 6 comparisons. Right now that would leave them tied with Harvard, but not only do they win that comparison, Clarkson finishing ahead of BC is bad news for Harvard. It would take a wild set of circumstances to push BC out of the tournament; I suppose that it exists but it might not.
