Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey - 2012-2013 Season Thread

Will BC be missing Skarupa and Carpenter for the U-22's.

Probably not. The only time of the year the US fields a U22 squad is in August. Having said that, there is often a National camp during the holiday break, geared towards the Senior USA squad.

Since the US has never sent a team to the U22 I doubt BC will be missiing anyone, on the other hand Clarkson will be missing Rattray and Ambrose so the advantage should swing to BC.

There is no such thing as "The U22". Canada sends a "Mostly U22" squad to the MECO/MLP/"whatever it is called these days" tournament in Europe. All the other nations in that tourney (Sweden/Finland/Russia etc) field their full National teams, while Canada sends in a squad of mostly U22's with the odd older player that is typically on the fringes of the National team. They use it as a development tool. Most years Canada either wins, or loses in the final. To the best of my knowledge, the US has never sent a team to this event. Some years ago, this event used to be in late January, a "Bad" time for college teams to miss these type of players. More recently, the event has been held in the beginning of January.

Note that this season there are a bunch of Olympic qualifying tournaments coming up in Late January/February. Any college players from teams like Russia, Czech, Slovakia etc would be missing a week or two with their college teams during the stretch drive.

Interesting. Lucky for BC not to be facing this problem, though odd that USA Hockey would pass up on a potential developmental tool?

The Clarkson game is going to have absolutely massive PWR implications.

How about BC AND Clarkson vs. Minnesota? 10-on-5?
Now you've gone and doctored the "miracle" right out of a BC win. :(

Unless of course, we get Ditka. (Whenever I use a joke this old, I wonder if it is lost on today's audience.)

It's okay - I just spent a couple of weeks badgering BC's athletic director via twitter to call Mike Ditka and ask him if he wants to coach BC football. I get the joke.

..

By the way: This story reminded me a little bit of Grant...

On a more serious note, while there's still a longgg time until the next game I'm already really looking forward to it, and I was trying to look into some statistics that might be more predictive than hearsay about BC and Clarkson.

The stats show roughly what my gut was telling me: this is a really tight matchup, with BC a slight underdog due in part to playing on the road.

The RPI is razor-tight (.6123 to .6305 edge for Clarkson) and Rutter calls it a close one (1.18-1.11 for Clarkson, with the teams 5th & 6th respectively). KRACH does show a decent advantage for Clarkson - 498.7-398.7, with BC having played a slightly tougher schedule (9th vs 16th, though I think our SOS would be higher if whoever did the calculations realized that Maine and Vermont are better than Wisconsin and North Dakota!!11111111).

I'm a big believer in goal differential as a predictor for future games. This is the one stat where BC has an edge - 75-35 for BC, 59-27 for Clarkson.

Anecdotally, BC's been playing very well lately, with the offense really humming along; their rankings are still recovering from the team's very slow start.

Realistically, a split of the @Clarkson/@SLU series would be a very good result, but for PWR purposes I think it's crucial to go 1-0-1.

What kind of game does Clarkson play, style-wise, and how might that match up with BC?

Is BC also that boring to watch? :D ( The fellow in the Picture is Yawning !!.)

P.S...Things I remember about Ditka's team, is the Fridge, the Super Bowl Shuffle and they Eyes of that fearless defensive linebacker (Singletary ?).

Goal differential inaccurately favors an offensive team over a defensive one. Goal ratio is a better predictor, at least at the professional level. (I don't know if anyone has looked at college hockey, let alone the women's game, specifically.) Clarkson actually has a very slight edge here, 2.19 to 2.14.

But we'll be missing JLR and Ambrose. That's a big bit of production out of the lineup.

Would be nice for Skarupa to be the first player from this area to win a State and NCAA hockey championship. Just not this year. I want the alma mater to win its 1st NCAA title sometime in my lifetime.

1) would be nice to see ANYONE break the tri-opoly currently dominating NCAA women's hockey (except for BU ;)).

2) How'd Skarupa get away? She's been a game-changer for BC, a huge reason why they're so deep offensively.

She's from Maryland (and won a state title with her brother for Wooton HS her freshman yr). Unless you want to play for D-III startup Stevenson, there are not a heck of a lot of collegiate options in the Fee State.

Didn't one or both of her parents attend BC?
