Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Please?

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Ple

That was the best weekend of hockey I've seen at Lynah in years. BC was the fastest team on the ice since the Rebecca Johnston teams a few years back. Cornell is a pretty quick team, but BC's overall speed was a constant threat. Marvelous stick skills on display as well...and, finally, a team that really knows how to run a 2-on-1. Loved everything about it, except Saturday's result (obviously). Well-deserved victory by the Eagles.

Boyles and WIH Team Earn Weekly Honors
Eagles recognized for weekend performance
Boyles named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season

Dec. 2, 2013

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Graduate student and co-captain Corinne Boyles earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season and Boston College was named Hockey East Team of the Week as announced by the league on Monday.

Boyles stopped 65 of 68 shots (.956 save percentage) and had a 1.51 GAA in two games against No. 3 Cornell over the weekend, compiling a 1-1 record on the weekend. The Wheaton, Ill. native tallied her 60th career win in the 4-1 victory over Cornell on Saturday. Boyles leads the team with a 9-4-0 record, a 2.03 goals against average, and a .926 save percentage on the season.

Boston College earned Team of the Week honors for the second time this season after notching its first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Eagles got off to a quick start against Cornell on Saturday and took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Meagan Mangene and Taylor Wasylk. Danielle Doherty added a goal in the second period to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead, and while the Big Red got on the board with a goal early in the third period, they were unable to complete the comeback as Emily Field concluded the scoring with a short-handed goal to settle the score at 4-1.

The Eagles (12-4-1, 7-1-0 WHEA) are currently second in the conference behind Boston University (11-3-1, 7-0-0 WHEA). Boston College travels to Harvard to take on the Crimson on Saturday, Dec. 7 in their last game before the break.

BC's forecheck was ridiculous in the second game. The Cornell women never really got adjusted until the 3rd period; and by then it was too late. There's definitely some room for improvement, but one more game before the break will do some good I suppose.

Well, that was the best BC have played since the Frozen Four last year, so the best this year's team have played ever. All credit to Cornell for being great opponents: Gagliardi and Cudmore in particular seemed to be all over the ice.

I'm pretty sure Coach Stone is looking for the Crimson and White ones...

Not necessarily. And what coach doesn't favor players that she/he is most familiar with in terms of playing style? (see 1980 men's Olympic team if you don't believe me). Katey is looking to win gold, not placate her own players. She will select the players that give Team USA the best chance to win.

I'm sure she looking to win gold, but the question is are her glasses too crimson stained for her to see clearly enough to be able to.

So if you're beaten by Syracuse, and Syracuse are beaten by Lindenwood, does that mean that according to Rutter you're worse than Lindenwood? Asking for a friend.

Nah, Rutter always allows for outliers.

BC probably did take a hit in the Ratings Percentage Index from the Syracuse loss to Lindenwood, though. First, Lindenwood waters down the Opponents-Opponents-Winning-Percentage number a bit, and then when you don't get a corresponding increase in Opponents-Winning-Percentage because Syracuse takes a loss in a game we expected the Orange to win, it does have a negative impact. Of course, it isn't as bad an impact as losing to Syracuse in the first place.

As we were saying over on the Harvard thread, that BC/Harvard game was a hell of a game, played at top speed and intensity for all but the first few minutes of the third period. It wasn't just a great game of hockey, it specifically showcased the virtues of the no-checking variety of the game: it was fast, fluid and highly skilled.

Harvard have the reputation for being the better defensive team, BC for being better offensively, and the play bore that out. It seemed that BC had more possession and more good chances, though the shot total was as usual an overestimate of the number of serious shots that BC had -- as often happens, we had a lot of breakaways that just ended with a mid-range shot at an unscreened goalie, and you can't expect that to work with Maschmeyer.

The BC PK was excellent, the PP less good. The Harvard PK was very defensive and effective, the BC PK very aggressive. There was one memorable BC PK at (I think) the start of the third where they seemed to be in the Harvard zone for at least 90 of the 120 seconds and set up almost an inverse PP pattern that Harvard were unable to disrupt. Would have been a good time for one of our shorties but you can't get those every game.

Miye D'Oench's early goal was top quality: she spotted a small hole above Boyles' shoulder and put the puck right through it. After that she was shut down effectively by the BC defense. On our side, Skarupa managed a few breakaways and didn't get the physical punishment she sometimes does, but wasn't able to convert them. Emily Pfalzer, who's been low-key this season, was strong all game even leaving aside her goal: very fast and well positioned. She had some injury at the end of last year and maybe the recovery took longer than expected, but hopefully this game is a sign that she's all the way back.

On our line-up: Grieves and McLean dressed for our fourth mini-line: McLean saw a decent amount of ice in the second and third periods, I didn't see Grieves out there. Wedell and Kickham were dressed for D but I don't think they played. Lemieux, Movsessian, Fish, and Taylor Blake didn't dress.

A bit chippy at times, with Maschmeyer taking a penalty at one point and some hitting after the whistle, but a great game against great opponents. Shame to see the break come now, the Eagles look like they're really hitting their stride.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Ple

Great game yesterday. Your team really moves the puck very well and finds the open player (I'm not going to say 'man' here because it just seems ridiculous) consistently. Your forecheck is the best we've seen so far this year.

That said, I'm truly puzzled as to how you lost to UNH. I was totally unimpressed with the Wildcats on Friday night. Yes, their goalie had a bad game but nothing the 'Cats did that night scared us. We were playing at ¾ speed and still won convincingly. Others who attended yesterday's game and saw the UNH game on Friday had the same reaction.

RE UNH: 1) Harvard little faster and cohesive as a unit 2) Coach fired a day earlier, team in bit of a turmoil 3) Lots of players dinged up 4) Goalie off...see 2 5) Sweet hands of Crowe.

UNH vs BC: 1)Cohesive play, with a ferocious forecheck BC not as much. 2)Short roster, but players physically in better shape (to a degree..Crossley's last game before having surgery for shoulder and wrist issues) 3) Rock solid tending and a bit of puck luck (or lack thereof for BC)

And from the BC perspective, in the UNH game we were slow and ragged and didn't find each other for no good reason. Boyles let in an early goal and the team lost confidence. This season has been a puzzler for us. It's only been the last couple of weekends that we've played how we expected to play all season.

It is a long season. Every team has good games and bad games during a long season.

I recall your postings last year about the Crimson varying greatly from week to week, loving them one week, and then lamenting their performance the next week. Varsity kids have a lot on their plate. It is not just about hockey. There is school, illness, away from home, boy friends etc etc etc. All can factor in the performance, one way or the other.

You mean we can't be querulous and judgmental?
