Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Please?

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Ple

Seriously...What is going on with BC?

I wonder if we underestimated the amount of leadership that Carpenter, Bolden and Burns provided. Skarupa is phenomenally talented, but she's just a sophomore and can't be expected to take that leadership role herself.

More tangibly, there are obviously problems on D. Neither of the freshmen D have played significant minutes; of the returning D, Lexi Bender is highly active and a great puck mover, but none of the others have been particularly impressive (though Jackie Young has a great slapshot). Emily Pfalzer, formerly a standout, was injured over the summer and is maybe still feeling the aftereffects of that. It seemed to me that I saw Erin Kickham, who was a (little-used) forward her freshman and sophomore years, used as a defender in the Vermont and Northeastern games. I thought she did a good job -- she was fast and smart -- but it was unexpected to see her in that position.

It also seems that there are problems skating the whole sixty minutes. Even in the Vermont blowout, the play in the third period was mainly Vermont. At the time I thought that was a classy choice to give Vermont a chance to show their stuff in front of a packed Gut; now I'm not so sure. We know that stamina is not a problem for these players, so I don't think it's physical tiredness. This has not in general looked like a team that is going to win from two goals behind, or even from one behind in the third.

The Eagles got the job done today without ever quite flying against a UConn team that played a very solid defense and kept shots to the outside most of the time. Ds are getting smarter at targeting Skarupa and she was showing some signs of frustration, notably when she incurred the cross-checking penalty. Capizzano and Field are stepping up to provide firepower on other lines -- Capizzano has been playing on a line with Skarupa and Wasylk but seemed to mostly be with other linemates today. D is still an issue: the defensive breakdown on the penalty kill that led to the second UConn goal was the source of some clear frustration on the bench and, though Lauren Wedell was dressed for the game, I didn't see a lot of ice time for her or for Erin Kickham (who now seems to be officially D and was listed as such on the line chart). Lexi Bender continues to be the standout D, though it was nice to see Jackie Young score with one of her characteristic slapshots. Steph Lemieux, Julie Fish didn't dress.

This is looking like a team that can give Cornell and Harvard a tough game if it comes out of the gates firing on all cylinders. Hopefully this and tomorrow's game will be a morale booster for them.

Also, the pep band was there. Don't know exactly why, but it's always nice to have them.

Only watched the first half of the game before I headed out with family to go skating... but good God were we taking UConn to the woodshed while I was watching.

Oh yeah, we definitely took them to the woodshed. It just wasn't quite what I was hoping, which was a woodshed... OF HORRORS.

Not such a trip to the woodshed on Sunday.......Is UCONN improving or is BC over rated?

Seems like BC were overrated at second at the start of the season, anyway. They're struggling on the road in particular. Don't know if UConn are improving, but they have a pretty solid D -- the SOG were high for Saturday but a lot of those shots were from tough positions.

New coach got in late so he doesn't have a recruit on the team yet.....It will take time but things are improving for UCONN.

From the Washington Post, no less: Rockville native Haley Skarupa outproduces her Olympian peers

“Haley is clearly an elite player and the best is yet to come on that big stage. That big, Olympic stage,” said Washington Pride Coach Kush Sidhu.

Boston College Coach Katie King Crowley said[,] “She’s got bruises everywhere because other teams are coming after her, and that’s something she has done a good job with because that can be physically draining.”

Interesting article. I think she will be on Team USA in the future. Is she not the leading scorer this year because the best players are not in the league this year? As far as selections to Team USA, perhaps Coach Stone is looking for the right ones…?

I said this in a comment on Grant's story, but what a classy program Cornell runs. From the tweet beforehand about "amazing athletes in both jerseys!" to the HD feed and decent play-by-play to the composure and modesty of the post-game interviews, everything was top quality. Seems like they have a great WIH culture out there.
