Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

BC landed a very good goalie recruit allegedly for next year. Ryan Edquist, former Minnesota recruit. Not sure what happened there.

Someone told me earlier in the year that Chris Birdsall was done with hockey entirely due to concussions. I have no idea if that is true or not.

Given the pedigree of Woll/Edquist, have to think either they are concerned about Woll going major junior or they are taking a 1A/1B approach and let them split time and battle it out.

Another recruit: Forward Jacques Bouquot ('00) from Salisbury School.

I was listening to the game last night and the NBC announcers were gushing over Brian Dumoulin's play, which created the game-winning goal. They interviewed him after the game. He sounded so calm (just like when he was playing at The Heights).

interestingly enough, when mookie was back seeing his mum and brother couple days ago he was driving while a game was on and had to listen to the radio for mike lange & chelmsford's own phil bourque (the ole' two niner). they were talking about dumoulin after he made a play and bourque brought up how it has taken a while for him to settle into the pens rotation. they said it was due to his poor skating when he was acquired (mookie LOVED the trade of stahl to carolina to get dumoulin), and how it had taken him time to learn how to skate to play nhl defense.
now mookie didn't see that as dumoulin was an outstanding ncaa defensemen and had seen all the bu guys settle into roles before dumoulin was able to, and it's not like the pens had THAT much depth with young'uns.
but that view was interesting nonetheless.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

I always thought what made dumoulin so good was he was good at everything yet maybe not elite in any one area. I can see the skating thing. He doesn't skate like a matheson but there was no doubt in my mind he would eventually make it. Should have a nice career.

dumoulin was awesome to watch at bc and you nailed it. he was always in the right spot at the right time. there were games in '12 when him & cross must've logged 30+ minutes. certainly not the skater that Matheson / noah are.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

The skating thing kind of makes some sense to me. He was never a bad skater but never looked like as someone said a Matheson. He didn't rush it much. But he was always in position when he had to be. His technical skills were superb. He always won the 1-on-1 battles. He did have some nice subtle moves on the offensive blue line that got him some room (including an incredibly underrated one in the Miami 2010 semifinal in Detroit that led to a goal).

A lot of the BC and BU guys have done well this playoffs. Bonino has found a great spot. Wilson was great for the Predators as he finally seems healthy. Coyle was really a pleasure to watch - I think he still has untapped upside. On the BC side Dumoulin has gotten more time and is more confident. Schneider was great on tv! And Boyle really helped push Tampa - he was doing it all there, really looked like the player drafted in the first round a long time ago.

I'm still a bit surprised/disturbed by seeing Matheson look so good with Florida. Having trouble reconciling how he could make a huge jump in level of hockey and in a few months look better than he did here unless he was playing hurt a lot here. Coaching? Either way, great kid, good for him (graduated early I think too!).

Marcus Rashford and Travis Shaw are doing the same thing in their sports. Some guys are just better at higher levels for whatever reason.

That is true, some kids are "pro" guys playing in the college game until they go pro and have better pro careers. Usually in hockey it is the bigger guys. Matheson was more a skill/skating guy that doesn't rely on his size.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Yeah Matheson getting regular minutes on a playoff team this quickly surprised me as well.

Trying not to be a #hottaek but maybe he wasn't as bad as everyone who ragged on him thought? Frustrating at times? Sure. But maybe the (relative) lack of skill on some of those non 2013-14 teams he played on forced him to take too many chances?

The guy must've been a possession monster. He averaged 93 SOG per year (2.5 per game). In the last decade on a per game basis no one has beat that in a single season, let alone a career. Cross' 2012: 2.4 & Noah's 2015: 2.2

Games Shots
2012-13 36 82 2.3
2013-14 38 90 2.4
2014-15 38 107 2.8

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

Impressive showing for Birdball. Justin Dunn is pretty legit. Gotta hope you can get it done with him on the mound for Game 1 and then get another win on the weekend somehow. Or hope Enrico shows up coaching the wrong Miami in the wrong sport.

Re: Boston College: It's Trophy Time

BC baseball making a super regional is almost unfathomable. What an accomplishment. There have been other upsets in the tourney too. Just too bad they were paired with miami regional and miami advanced.

yeah, tough draw for sure but they won a game and stretched it to three . Great story and besides hockey, we haven't had many. they were considering dropping baseball a few years ago too , no?
