Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

If any of y'all live in the Chestnut Hill area and want to see the Denver game, you are welcome to come over to watch with us. Even you, jcarter. Just bring your own food and clean up your own mess.

It's better than trying to make Roggies or the Sports Depot put the game on one tiny TV with no sound (something I've done many a time over the years). Send me a message to my USCHO email if interested.

How many people are going to be at your place? Can I watch with you guys?

And coughing more than usual as well.

They were supposed to start putting ice down between 3 and 6 pm today so they must be loving this. Should help them get a real nice sheet of ice down there.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

I really was a little nervous with these limited view seats I got for $15 but the more pics I see, the more stoked I am. I think they are going to be very good seats behind the goal. A little low but no different than being behind the net at Conte. Let's hope so anyway.

Depends on how high up you are. Without overly tooting the "I skated on the ice at Fenway this morning" horn (:p), I got a chance to check out the view from the stands and for the first ten rows or so on the third base side, it's pretty hopeless. Yeah, it's not that much different than being right behind at Conte, but only if the seats were way back from the ice.

I'm going to make a point of having someone at home tape the game so I can see what happened when I get back.

looks like from sec 81/82 toward the wall you will be fine on the rail. the wall rises there parallel to the foul line.

if nick is in the box seats against the tarp (71-79), that will be (i'd bet) lower than the ice platform and he'll have to watch on the jumbletron.

The US U20/UND game is televised tonight (now!) if you have the extra sports channels on FCSC (for me that is 263) - direct tv I think is 617. Otherwise you can watch tomorrow on NHL Network.

Kreider is wearing 20. (Kenny Ryan 25)

Mid-Season Report with Coach York

Bob Van Wert
EagleAction.com Staff Analyst

The record is 10-3-2 and they stand in a good second place in Hockey East. They're ranked fifth in the country (two months ago one noted pundit said they would finish eighth in Hockey East.) They've already beaten Boston University. And while two months ago the question hanging over this edition of the Boston College Eagles was "is this team any good?" the question now is "how good is this team?" Current thought is, as HBO's Larry David might say, the this team is "Good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, good."

With his team halfway through the mid-season break for exams and holidays, coach Jerry York sat down in his office recently and looked back on how his team has developed so far. He was reminded that in early October he was quick to point to his team's inexperience, with just seven upperclassmen on the roster and with three young freshmen expected to play regularly on defense. Regular goaltender John Muse was coming off major hip surgery. He was reminded that he predicted that it would be January before his team would come together to be a major force in college hockey.

"But I think we have come along a lot sooner than I thought," he said. "Two months ago I thought we had major question marks from the blue line back to the goal, we didn't know what we had with the three freshmen defensemen and there was great uncertainty concerning John Muse's recovery. They all have definitely exceeded my expectations."

First, he said, he is definitely pleased with his goaltending situation. He obviously has great confidence in John Muse, who reports no lingering effects from his surgery. While website message boards come down hard on Muse every time he lets in a goal, York continues to stand by his man. But lately York has added freshman Parker Milner to a somewhat regular rotation with Muse and the freshman is an impressive 4-0 in the games he has played.

"Goal was definitely one of our major concerns, but John is coming along on schedule and Parker has already shown that he can play at this level," York said.

As for the defense, York entered the season with great confidence in Tommy Cross, himself coming off a knee injury, but beyond that he was unsure where the rest of his defense would come from. "I think defense is the hardest position to jump from high schools or juniors into the college ranks," he said. But the three freshmen, Philip Samuelson, Patrick Wey and Brian Dumoulin "have shown improvement right along. They handle the puck well and they move the puck well and the rest will come with experience, game wise. Right now they are pretty good and I hope that the defense will become a little tighter in the second half."

While the play of the three freshmen has pleased York, one major surprise on the entire team has been the play of senior defenseman Carl Sneep. "Carl has struggled throughout his career, with peaks and valleys, but now he has become a dominant player. Now he is becoming an all-league type player." He has emerged as an offensive threat with six goals. "Usually a player makes a jump in his first couple of years and he is pretty much set by the time he gets to be a senior. Carl has never played in this stratosphere before."

As for offense from the forwards, York never doubted that his team would be able to score goals. The question was whom would it be to get that job done. Returning forwards were all coming off subpar years and fans hoped that one would emerge as the dominant "go to" guy. But instead, we have seen the scoring spread among several players, with senior Ben Smith leading the way with nine.

"Ben was on a tear early," York said. "But then he broke his wrist three weeks ago." York looked up with a smile when he said that, sort of like he was saying, "nobody knew that, did they?"

"But he will hopefully have the cast off for the second half and I expect the goals to come regularly then"

As for the rest of the forwards, York says Cam Atkinson and Brian Gibbons are "game breaker type players who are really our top end, high class forwards. They can do some really nice things."

Surprisingly, York kept bringing up the name of Barry Almeida, the wing on the checking line. "Barry Almeida could be a goal scorer for us. He has been getting excellent chances to score lately and it will only be a matter of time before he cashes in," York said.

The mention of Almeida, a wing on the line thought to be the checking line, points out the great balance that York sees on his team. "We have great depth, more than we've had in awhile. All four lines are contributing very well. All of our lines are able to score regularly. I really don't think we have a hierarchy among our lines."

Of note, York has kept his four lines intact so far and has no plans to make any changes. "They get to know each other better this way," he said. They get in sync this way."

The surprise on the offense, according to York, is freshman Pat Mullane. "He has been a force for us both offensively and defensively right from the get-go and I think he has really been a factor in getting Cam Atkinson to emerge to where he is now. We didn't think he would be nearly the player he is, but he has stood out right from the start of the season."

Also, York says, Joe Whitney is right back where he should be after a down year. Matt price is "one of the best leaders we have had here." Jimmy Hayes has improved greatly over his freshman season. Chris Kreider is "still very young, but I expect him to be a major goal scoring force in the second half of the year." Steve Whitney "has had his ups and downs, but will eventually become an important goal scorer for us." Paul Carey "greatly benefited from his freshman year and I like his speed and his size."

With that said, coach York admitted that he was excited about the second half of the season. "We call the second half our 'Trophy Season'," York said. "We have the tournament in Denver, the Beanpot, the league championship, the Hockey East tournament and maybe the nationals," he said. "I would hope that some of those trophies would go to us."

Add the game at Fenway Park versus BU and York might be right about all the excitement in the months ahead. "I hear they will have the benches heated at Fenway and I expect that I will wear a large, warm coat," he concluded. Full steam ahead.

Of Note: Much of York's time during the two-week break will be spent scouting possible recruits for the years ahead. "I will see a lot of games," York said. Right now three players are signed for next year- goalie Brian Billet (2010 or 2011?), forward Bill Arnold and huge defenseman Isaac MacLeod from western Canada (Carl Sneep's replacement.) York said there is the possibility of one more signing for next season.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Lots of action. Two commits in one day. Last time this happened was what? Sneep and Ryan Hayes in 1 day I think.

Anyway, the other commit is Greg Brown's son, Patrick Brown.
