Boston College Eagles 2011-2012

Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012

Why is it that when somebody posts something hockey related around here, all one hears is crickets, but everybody shows up when they think an opportunity to argue has been presented? As a joke, people will sometimes refer to their "hated" rival when playing a team a) that they never play and b) about which they know nothing. Lighten up, or it's going to really be a long season.

It is one thing to have a hated rival, it is quite another when an insult with the S**M word is used to describe them. Would expect a reaction, and deservedly so, specially if there are further comments from the OP suggesting no regrets using that type of terminology. Using words like that is no joking matter. JMHO.

Google World University Rankings

McGill #17

Boston College #349

Hahaa. Good point. Don't confuse him with the facts.

Enough said. Both are certainly well respected both academically and hockey-wise. BC may certainly have the better hockey team, but on the other hand they don't come close in academic stature. And if you have to be better at one than the other, the choice is a no-brainer in terms of real life value.

Maybe that's why it seems Grant is manifesting an inferiority complex

Huh ?. McGill and BC bitter rivals?. Did I miss something ?.

For those unfamiliar with the legendary story of the BC-McGill rivalry, gather round, for it is a seminal moment in sporting history.

The 1940 Boston College football team, who legendary QB "Chuckin'" Charlie O'Rourke would eventually lead to a 10-0 record and a Sugar Bowl victory, faced McGill in a Preseason game at Fenway Park, back when Fenway used to host college football games every Saturday.

The long and grinding game was already under protest as McGill kept arguing that BC's touchdowns should not count unless they ran an additional 20 yards past the third baseline, but the officials were able to maintain order. With the score tied 12-12 and the game headed to sudden death OT, McGill's kicker boomed a touchback out the back of the end zone. As BC trotted out to line up at the 20, the McGill players yelled "rouge!" and ran off the field, declaring a mysterious one point victory.

From that point forward it was determined that Canadian teams shouls no longer be allowed to participate in gridiron football.
While long time BC Athletic Director Bill Flynn declined to ever schedule games against the school that sullied BC's perfect record in 1940, current AD Gene DeFilippo has chosen to renew the rivalry.

Thanks for the interesting backstory. But there nothing like a holding a 71 yr old grudge....likely pretty much everyone participating in that game is dead now. Isn't it kind of like holding you responsible for your grandparents behaviour?

Now, I know the collegiate athletic culture is different in Canada, but here in America, we put history and tradition paramount. We must never forget those who came before us and paved the way, as history is what we have to be proud of - particularly in this, the autumn of our discontent, when the football team appears unlikely to win 4 games, the men's hockey team is reeling from early departures, and Kelli Stack and Molly Schaus have moved on from the Lady Eagles to a life of fame and fortune in the CWHL. But despite the bleak picture of this autumn, we can take pride in the legends whose stories bind us... Then, now, and always.

Additionally, it is important to note that in the grand scheme of things, 71 years is not much time. The world has been around for over 7,000 years, give or take. 1940 to 2011 is a blink of an eye.

That is why this game was of paramount importance, and why Charlie O'Rourke's soul rests peacefully after the 5-1 pasting by the maroon and gold.

Re: Boston College Eagles 2011-2012

For some reason, I'm reminded of this South Park episode that really has nothing to do with any of this, but then this whole thread isn't that reality based. It kind of brings me back to simpler times when Joe and Tony were frosh. Disclaimer: Please do not click on this link if you believe in taking everything literally or have zero sense of humor, because I do not want to spend the rest of the week explaining any of this.

If you are from north of the 49th and click on that link a window pops up that says "Sorry Canada - Video not Available" LMAO!

Maybe Ol Charlie is still working that grudge...

Hah! Blame it on Canada! :)

That is a cool story. Thanks for sharing. As you can see north of the Border we play by a different set of rules. :D

Just to add another dimension to this story....Chuckin Ol Charlie was born in...You guessed it, Montreal, Home of the McGill Redmen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_O'Rourke

Ahh, hyperbole at its finest. :D

US News & World Report College Rankings
BC: #34
McGill: didn't even bother to rank them

So just think about that and tell me what you think.

Huh? USNWR is a report of US college rankings only. No international schools are ranked. Contrary to popular belief inside the US, the world does not actually stop at US borders. You have to look at a world ranking service to see the top schools in the world. Note: the top ranked school in the world currently is not located in the US.

Yeah, the US News & World Report doesn't rank schools around the world.

McGill isn't listed because they aren't regarded highly enough. It's as simple as that. Want to cherry pick some more rankings to fit your argument?

Kelli Stack and Molly Schaus have moved on from the Lady Eagles to a life of fame and fortune in the CWHL.

Man, that is the second time today I missed something Epic. What happened . You can get both Fame and Fortune in the CWHL?. Anxiously waiting t'ill SeyMore hears more about this and fills us in ! :D

In the real world which is comprised of seven continents a myriad number of inhabited islands, you would be hard pressed to find many academics who would rank BC( a good school) over McGill( a great school). Cherry pick this Grant ole Boy there is moe to life than BC and the nutmeg state.

This thread started with a statement taht BC has 27 players. looks like womens hockey may be following the male equivalent in over recruiting
