Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

That doesn't make a lot of sense, seeing that Neil Shea did alright for himself (likely no money issues) and going to the Q which is further away from home when there is an illness in the family? I hope the extra money he is making in the Q equates to a $200K education, the degree on the resume after hockey, and the priceless college life experience. I guess good luck to him.

I wouldnt waste to much time worrying about it or speculating on anyones family or their financial info.

Neil is a smart guy and good dad. He has his kids best interest at heart and will do the right thing. Good luck to him and his family.
Big loss for BC as he is an exceptional hockey player.

Keeping it just to hockey, would have thought he would have taken a stab at US natl team for one year first as he has 5 years of juniors left..... Either way, its a family decision and every kid has their path

With the rate BC has been producing NHL'ers, it's a dumb move. But as I originally said, good luck to him and I hope he makes the NHL, because that free degree would be a nice thing to have should injury or anything else prevent him from a long pro career.

You never know... I do know though that the Quebec league has put a lot more kids into the NHL every year than BC has, not even close. I dont give BC as much credit as you do. Hayes, Kreider, Atkinson, Ferriero etc in my opinion would have all made it quicker if they had gone major junior route. Quebec league plays a pro style game, Hockey East runs a bowling alley. The only real thing that D 1 does is allow kids extra time to get ready. Which can be very important. That and an education. Also, lets not get going with the 200K free education. Saw a study recently that said that 90% + of all the guys playing D 1 football for example on a scholarship would have on avg received over 80% free in aid. Which means they would have spent 30 or 40 K tops to go to school. How many people do you really know who pay full? Also, the major junior leagues now allow the key guys to set the money aside and use it down the road at any school, not just a Canadian university. Pat kane for example used his money to pay for his sisters education.

I fully support D 1 and feel eevry kid should do it because there is more to life than hockey. the college experience is tremendous and important for kids. Also dont feel that it better prepares kids for pro hockey. Balance out everything and D 1 wins.

Time will tell.

great post . i think, i can only say that i dont think you can compare the football kids on scholarship to the hockey kids for a bundle of reasons and i wonder how many football kids have 40k in student loans

Hockey East runs a bowling alley.

If Hockey East is a bowling alley, Bertagna is the fat guy behind the desk spraying the smelly bowling shoes with cans of Lysol (can't quite reach and call him Saddam and go with the Lebowski reference).

A lot of the times, I would agree with this assessment of the league. But this is the way Bertagna wants it. He'd rather put his ostrich head in the sand and "vehemently disagree" (direct quote from him years ago) with anyone that dares question what is going on in the league.

So you're saying a league with 17 teams produces more NHL players than one NCAA team...no kidding. That's the kind of insight I love reading. If you think they would have made it quicker by going to the Q, fine. I have no problem with that. That's not even a shot at BC. That's just your opinion on Canadian Juniors vs. NCAA. Every kid is different. Some actually enjoy going the college route for a few years and are not in a hurry to turn pro the first chance they get.

I agree 100%
real difference is Canadian kids culture could care less about college experience. They love major junior and dream about it. Them getting drafted to play in OHL is just as big a high for an 18 year old than a Boston kid committing to BC.

Pats/Jets are on SNF that night(11/13) so you should be able to catch both if that is any consolation to you

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

I noticed on Chris Heisenberg's site that Michael Sit is no longer listed as a BC recruit for 2012. Does anyone know anything about his situation?

Also, I noticed a lot of BC's recruits will be playing in the USHL this year, as opposed to the teams they were on last year (Teddy Doherty, Sam Piazza, Conor McGlynn, etc). This should be great for their development.

Well he's listed as 2011 on the 2011 sheet so he has no reason to be on the 2012 sheet.

Sit was on the 2012 list just last week and now he's not. I figured he was moved to 2012, as was Peter McMullen and Quinn Smith. All three were originally slated to come to BC this fall.

Stephen Greenberg (manager 08-09 through 10-11) is the 11-12 Brendan Burke intern with USA Hockey's NTDP. Brock & Co. are lucky to get him.

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

At least the curse of being highly ranked and targeted is off already for next season. INCH does not even have BC in the top 10. Yale 4th, Union 6th and BU 7th are the eastern teams on the list. Except for that last ugly game against CC, BC actually lived up to expectations last year. Finishing with a 30-8-1 record is as good as any one can expect in this day and age. Surprising that BU is ranked so highly. Sure they returned relatively unscathed but if you look at their record last year they won less than half of their games at 19-12-8.

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

So if a team doesn't play well one year then they can't grow as a team and mature and have a chance to be a top 10 team the next season? Look at BC's track record..how was the team in 09? .500 and didn't make the tournament and then you guys won it last year(2010). You could say the same thing for BU who missed the tournament in 08 before winning it in 2009. That logic doesn't make sense. BU is also bringing in a solid freshman class who most likely will cause guys to lose their spots in the lineup who played last year. It isn't like they picked BU to win it or anything which would be a bit more of a stretch until these guys establish themselves during the season
