Big Ten Hockey Conference

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Really? The BCS is gone, then?

The BCS is not an NCAA championship. There is no NCAA championship in the Bowl Subdivision, that's why they have bowls.

In the Football Championship Subdivision (i.e. I-AA), however, the NCAA does sanction a championship. 20 teams, 10 automatic qualifiers, all of which are conference champions. Sound familiar?

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

the real point of this whole thing is how **** ugly the Penn State Jerseys are... hideous and I know hideous I have a DU jelly Donut jersey

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

See, now I just don't buy this at all. Bemidji State has gotten recruits recently just by exploiting the "overlooked" aspect from schools like Minnesota, et. all. Sure, they may get a, "hey, why don't you walk on and get on TV and be a Gopher?" from them, but the return of coming to BSU and being top dog is, in a lot of cases, a bigger deal to a kid. After all, these kids want to play, not sit on the bench hoping to be seen.
So you're saying us North Dakota fans can look forward to the Bemidji State recruiting model? Yipee!!!

It's quite telling that the overall discussion on recruiting in a post-BTHC world starts with the premise that the BTHC is going to get all of the best recruits and the WCHA schools can maybe still form competitive teams with the leftovers if they sell "playing time" to recuits and play their cards right. That may be how it works now for some WCHA teams, but I think North Dakota and Denver have enjoyed getting to the point where they are competing with Minnesota and Wisconsion for recruits on a pretty equal basis. A lot of North Dakota and Denver fans are not going to be content landing BTHC rejects and becoming a cute mid-major that makes an occassional run.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

I am sorry, but that is true no matter what happens in the future. What you are describing is a problem that wont go away no matter how things shake up because what we are seeing now is completely fraudulent.

If fans are fickle, all it will take is for UND or DU to have a couple down seasons and they are gone. It isnt about the BTHC at all, it is about the fact that the fans dont care. Well if they dont care why are we trying to save the sport anyways? If fans only care about teams that win screw em they can watch something else. And that holds for all teams fans including Gopher fans.

The appeal of hockey was the balance of the small teams and the big teams. The Big 10 will destroy that balance having a league that is entirely made up of large school teams.

That will destroy almost everything there is to love about college hockey.

College athletics are not always about the money. There are a number of small/no revenue sports that are offered because of what they offer the students. Hockey was a tweener sport. The fact that the Big 10 wants to exploit it for money makes me sick. This isn't football, and it isn't basketball.

I agree that hockey has appeal because of the mixture of big and small schools, but calling it 'balance' is inaccurate. It is inherently unbalanced, and because of that it is inherently unstable.

The Big 10 Hockey conference takes whatever instability there is now and amplifies it.

I hate to tell you this, but this couldnt last. This pie in the sky BS some of you have for the glory days of yesteryear was and is dying. This is evident by the fact that everytime some move is made in the hopes of bettering college hockey the blowback screws everything up. One team adds it, another drops it. Small regional schools screw other small regional schools causing them to drop hockey. Conferences form, and then fold. Great publicity leads to cruddy gimmicks. This predates the BTHC, the BTHC is just the last, biggest moneygrab/FU.

You want things the way they used to be, lets drop about 12 teams right now, go back to the old conferences and go for broke. Then you will have better smaller teams that make more money and the rivalries will kick ***. Then you can be happy because the golden age will be back.

This "Pure As the Driven Snow" mentality some of you have when waxing nostalgic is kinda funny. Things were always better back in the day. But ya know what, for all the great little stories that existed back then, how different were the title winners then as opposed to now? The champions look roughly the same. (I see lots of Denvers, Michigans, BUs, Minnes, UNDs and Wisconsins)

Why can you not compete for the same recruits? We are adding one team to college hockey people, not 10. The top half of the WCHA will still be national title contenders, but I think the bottom half will slip. There are less than 60 teams in NCAA hockey and adding one team is not going to make the 10 remaining teams in the WCHA a mid major.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Because they have to play somebody else - unless they want ALL BTHC games.

It's why the NFL shares revenue. New York can't play Dallas and Philly every week. Shared revenues helps keep Green Bay, etc., in the league.

Well, Jacksonville, Detroit and St. Louis are probably better examples (since although Green Bay is a small market, the Packers have a huge following both within and outside the state of Wisconsin), but the point is made.

Over the course of a season, that's a lot of money and time saved by not attending the games. No matter how much they suck, they will always remain my team and I will continue watching them - on tv - but they'll have to put a good team on the ice to warrant the financial and time committments to physically attend their games.

The law of averages show that the team is more often than not worth the price of admission even despite the past few seasons. I firmly believe the level of play will return much sooner than later although I fully understand the pessimism at this point in time.

We haven't seen a brand new first time school champion since Maine won the thing in 1993 or some time around then.

If I am DU or UND I am going to work my butt off more because of the addition of PSU.

No different than wrestling, or softball, or women's soccer, or women's volleyball.....................

That's my point.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Minnesota should love getting into the "Little Six" conference. That will guarantee no more 7th place finishes. It's a no-brainer.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Here's one upside for the Gophers joining the Big Ten... at least they can't finish 7th again.
And here's another upside to MN joining the BTHC: not having overconfident opposing fans talking smack because their team finally won an NCAA game after nearly ten tries.
