Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference
Looked like this...Are those the ACHA jerseys?

Football is the engine that drives the Big Ten Train, why would they let Notre Dame on their train just for hockey when they won't join for football?
The Big Ten Conference released the following statement today regarding Penn State’s plans to establish NCAA Division I men’s and women’s ice hockey programs.
The Big Ten Conference is excited about Penn State’s recent announcement regarding the establishment of NCAA Division I men’s and women’s ice hockey programs set to begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year. Our institutions have longstanding relationships with Division I, Division II, and Division III college hockey programs that have benefitted both our institutions and the entire national hockey community.
For many years, we have had five institutions sponsoring Division I men’s ice hockey programs – Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Wisconsin. Big Ten rules allow for a championship whenever there are six institutions sponsoring a program in any given sport. This leads to the presumption that there will be a Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Championship at some point in the future. A decision of that nature, however, cannot be made without a significant amount of discussion both internally with conference chancellors, presidents, administrators and coaches, and externally with the hockey community as a whole. Whatever we do, we will communicate in a respectful and responsible way as we endeavor to balance all of the unique interests in play.
We congratulate Penn State and wish them well as they continue to provide the most broad-based opportunities possible for their student-athletes
Western Mich.My guess would be for the sake of TV coverage. If the goal is to build the most high profile conference possible, inviting Notre Dame would make more sense than waiting for Indiana or Illinois to start up a program.
In one swoop the conference would have wrapped up every hockey school that also plays D-1 hoops and football with the exception of BC, U-Conn & Miami-Ohio IIRC.

Penn State road & home jerseys look pretty sweet.

Now THAT is how you tactfully handle the situation.
Paying attention, Barry Alvarez?
It was on the live video news conference on the Big Ten Network.link?
I was thinking the same thing.

Penn State presented the jerseys to the Donors.
Did you see the quote I posted (here? elsewhere?) regarding what Alvarez was saying about conferences? Essentially: that the only hurdle left to clear is how to back out of the W/CCHA.

Agreed. Very well done press conference.Did you see the quote I posted (here? elsewhere?) regarding what Alvarez was saying about conferences? Essentially: that the only hurdle left to clear is how to back out of the W/CCHA.

I don't think a 5,000-6,000 seat arena is going to be big enough. I know they want to build it small and drive up ticket demand, but they would be crazy not to build a "false wall' and have the capacity to add 5,000 seats.
No other ice arena within 80 miles. Nothing to do in eastern PA. on weekend nights. Hundreds of tweets during the press conference. 500,000 alums. Synergy with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
They're the Mother Loving Big Ten! They've already got their own network. Why would they want to invite ND so that their hockey team can befit from their network and money? Until ND is picking out which division of the BT they want their football team in, they're not going to be a part of the BTHC.
Simply put, ND hockey's fate is now pretty much tied to what happens to the remaining CCHA and WCHA teams. If the Irish fans are smart, they would start making it a point to start traveling to NMU, LSSU, Ferris, Western, BGSU, Miami, and Huntsville, and make it a point to spend money there.
Will NEVER happen. There is a huge amount of bad blood towards the domers for the manner in which their administration rejected the invitation in 99. The Big Ten wants them as a complete package or NOTHING--no CIC membership (which the domers still had the arrogance and balls to ask for after the 99 fiasco) and certainly no help for the domer's hockey program.
Why would the Big Ten, give away a potential bargaining chip that could be used in luring the domers fully into the Big Ten? We're not the Big East and won't grab our ankles for domers.
Agreed. Very well done press conference.

Wouldn't surprise me if they sell 5,000 season tickets in a couple of hours.
