Big Ten Hockey Conference

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

How close is the AHA to splitting? Niagara and BobbyMo wouldn't be too bad of teams to add to a weakened CCHA. Plus, that would give Penn State some non-conference opponents, and maybe work an agreement to swing the Big10 through the rest of the CCHA once in a while...

And are the Ivies really that ready to leave ECAC? I know I'm not up to speed on the East coast teams, but wow.
According to the USCHO roundtable discussion the AHA previously wanted to split up to get two bids.

Paula C. Weston: Chris, I’m hoping this will lead to realignment of conferences as well — we really do need to look at that issue.

Ed Trefzger: I agree that smaller conferences are inevitable. When four or more perennial NCAA playoff teams end up in the same conference, nabbing three or four bids among them, while perhaps the ECAC and Atlantic Hockey have three among 24 teams, the other conferences are going to do the math and look at realignment.

Jim Connelly: No doubt, Ed. I think that is one of the main issues. Little conferences want the same benefits of the major conferences. And I’m not sure if I feel that is right or wrong.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

I think its the idea that if the big ten splits off, why not make the other conferences smaller to get more autobids

Would make sense. split the league with a scheduling agreement for both leagues to play each other say four weekends a year, helps cover them for non-conference games nicely.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Without reading all of this and seeing that the BTHC WILL happen in the near future...what's going to happen to the smaller programs left behind in the WCHA/CCHA?
So, you want everybody to repeat everything for you, so you can read it in new posts instead of old posts?

I think he's looking for the Cliff Notes version of what everybody said.

Thank you. It's really not that uncommon when you have a 20 page thread.

MavsFan, you're the one guy who had a problem with it. Congrats.

Mostly its been people throwing Shibby at a wall, seeing what sticks and what passes the smell test. Stick around, all of that goes out the window here and we have new shibby to throw here soon.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Well, Andy Baggott (finally) picked up on the story.

As you would expect for a story by Baggott with a lot of quotes from Barry Alvarez, it's VERY pro-BTHC.

*sigh* I'm with blockski when it comes to not wanting the BTHC, but agreeing that it may be necessary since the status quo is non-sustainable. But even then, reading that article reinforces why I dislike Alvarez (and to a certain extent, Baggott) so much...

“I don’t know the logistics — how long it takes to get out of a league, all of that — but I sense that we will move in that direction,” UW athletic director Barry Alvarez said Thursday.

Carefully measuring his words, Alvarez said more will be known Friday when Penn State officials make a “significant gift and facility announcement” and next month when he said the matter will be on the agenda at the Big Ten meetings.

“There’s going to be Big Ten hockey,” assured a source with intimate knowledge of the process, adding that 2014-15 is the target point for introducing the new league although he said “it could happen sooner than that.”

With Penn State soon to be on board as the 59th Division I program, Alvarez was asked what road blocks stood in the way of the Big Ten creating a new college hockey brand.

“I don’t know,” he said. “You need six teams in the league. We will have six. They do govern us, the Big Ten. I don’t anticipate much of a hurdle other than getting out of your respective conferences.”

Alvarez said Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has spoken in the past of making men’s hockey a programming staple on the Big Ten Network. That notion will take a huge step forward Friday.

“We’ve talked about a Big Ten Conference for hockey,” Alvarez said. “I think that would be very appealing.”

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Apologies if this has been covered already, but with 6 teams already in place is there any reason why Notre Dame wouldn't join this conference for hockey? Is it not allowed by the Big 10 bylaws unless they go Big 10 in all sports?

Maybe, or maybe I'm the only one who said something. You want an "executive summary" because you're too busy to bother. I get it.

I don't know if associate members are outlawed by the BT bylaws, but I get the feeling that until Notre Dame joins for everything, they won't be joining for anything.

Football is the engine that drives the Big Ten Train, why would they let Notre Dame on their train just for hockey when they won't join for football?

Paging MavsFan...

You want an "executive summary" because you're too busy to bother.

So being too busy to read 20 pages is now a problem?

Starting in 2012-2013 season, playing two seasons as an independent then they will "Talk with the other Big Ten teams to see where we fit after that."

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Penn State road & home jerseys look pretty sweet.

200 people at press conference. That more people than many small D-1 programs draw for a game.

Sidney Crosby thinks this will be great for hockey.
