Big Ten Hockey Conference

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

When there's actual discussions about the BTHC, you may get some interest. But outside of the "no shootouts" start, this thread turned into yet another bicker fight. BFD.

In actual news, CCHA head ref Piotrowski was named to be the head B10 ref.

From the informal polling over the past decade, Pio was consistently the best ref in the CCHA before he retired and moved onto the head ref position. But that's setting the bar pretty low. Sort of like recognizing the most gifted orator at a Geeks United convention. The sad thing is that reading through many WCHA threads, this appears to be an improvement for those of you west of Lake Michigan. We can hope that there will be a real effort to maintain SOME consistency in the reffing for the B1G...

I am SO hopeful the B6 refs are consistent and not a bunch of bumbling boobs like I am used to seeing. It will be very interesting to see who they hire.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Come on now. Wisconsin fans, by and large, are much less knowledgable than Minnesota or Michigan fans. I don't even think that is debatable.
At least they can accurately count the titles they've won, unlike their brethren to the west.
(Roll out the same tired spiel, JDUMB.)

LOL, wow was that weak.

Gophers have 7 championships (as clarified by FS23 in this thread by way of discussing the requirements for a "championship" as it relates to football).

They can count? I mean things other than dead deer or paint thinner gallons? Wow.

Thank you Fighting Sioux Fan.

This is getting a little funny.

"No, you're a whioux fan!"

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

seriously, is this what we expect from you guys?

1 post of information to 20-30 posts of taunts and arguments over pointless stuff?

If you consider being aloof and ignoring you arrogant, not only will you find Michgan fans arrogant, but MSU and OSU fans (mostly).

How about real news?

We know that the championship will alternate between St. Paul and Detroit, and that the head ref will be Piotrowski. Anything else?

More like gossip, but there was some Big Ten hockey talk at a Michigan alumni event in Chicago earlier this week. This is all second hand (I couldn't attend), but Red and AD Brandon are in favor of having a Big Ten tourney in Chicago down the road. There is also a feeling that "1 or 2" more Big Ten schools will likely be considering adding hockey over the next few years, although it is understood that there likely won't be much movement until some big donors step up.

Please forgive me if this post doesn't meet the lofty standards our more enlightened Badger and Gopher brethren have set for this thread.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

So, what I've gotten from this thread is that the conference tournament host site will no longer be held at the X or JLA. Instead, it will be determined by drawing two dates, and whichever school has the most football championships between those years will be awarded the right to host on campus. The decision between using claimed championships or total awarded championships will be handled in a separate drawing. In the event of a tie the school with the most recent football championship will host.

Also, shootouts will occur because people are dumb.

Outside of the lack of fans near Chicago (which I admit, I didn't think about), I liked the idea/concept of the B1G championship there.

As for the future teams- forgive me for not holding my breath. But, of all the areas that may see growth, I personally see the other B1G schools as a higher possibility. It just makes sense.

Careful- with that kind of attitiude, you may be labled as arrogant as your neighbors SE of you. :)

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

I have my doubts that the Big Ten conference tourney will be held in Chicago. Until Illinois or Northwestern add a D1 program, I just don't see it happening.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

They could dabble with Chicago. But I think the tourney would be literally empty. With all the hockey going on here, to possibly include the NCHC and WCHA tourneys as well as total Gopher TV coverage here, I don't know how many would travel east. You might see some Bucky fans show.

Being in the Chicago area, I would definitely be up for this. I'd imagine down the road is going to be at least 5 years away given the current schedule for the tourney though. The United Center is a good venue. Plus there is a lot of talk that Wirtz wants to build up the area around it with a lot more restaurants, shops and bars. Right now, not so much.

There is also a feeling that "1 or 2" more Big Ten schools will likely be considering adding hockey over the next few years, although it is understood that there likely won't be much movement until some big donors step up.

Stupid Illinois making me wait. All I have to say is that they better be one of those "1 or 2" schools and I hope there's movement soon. That rumor about Jimmy John's funding their program was too much of a tease.

Speaking of NCAA hockey in Chicago, did they ever finalize that Soldier field game? I want to say it was all but done, but I haven't heard an "official" announcement. Anyone?

Soldier Field games will be happening. I wouldn't hold my breathe on Chicago getting the conference tournament unless Illinois or Northwestern go D1.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

The United Center is a great venue for watching hockey, but the current set-up isn't particularly well suited for hosting a college tournament. That could change if the proposed retail expansion becomes a reality:

Some additional details:

At least in the short run, I share the concerns about potential attendance (or lack thereof) in Chicago. But when the tournament has more of a track record, and if the expansion of the UC occurs, Chicago could become an attractive option.

It could be done, but it would take a lot of effort. Obviously Chicago is fairly centrally located, so you'd have to hope that Michigan and Wisconsin fans would travel. But it would really have to be promoted well to get the Chicago population involved. Not having a D1 school and an abundance of other options as you mentioned means I don't think college hockey is on the radar around here. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. We have the NHL, AHL, USHL, and up until recently the ECHL. It would really have to be marketed well and sold as a novelty game to stand out. The outdoor Soldier Field game is the perfect kind of thing to build momentum in the area though. It's big flashy event with a lot of well known schools. I think it could get a lot of attention and hopefully get people wondering why Illinois doesn't have a team...
