Big Ten Hockey Conference

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Frankly the Soldier field 'showcase' will be a good barometer of what we could expect from the west for a BT tourney. I'm sure the conference will be watching with interest.

I don't agree. Notre Dame will be playing in the other game, but will never play in a BTHC tourney game. Plus, these will be outdoor games. BTHC tourney games will not be.

Exactly. There will be a big part of the crowd there just because it's one of these stupid, trendy outdoor games. Few are going because they actually want to watch hockey, which most going to a BTHC tourney would want.... I would hope.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Of course not... MN never gives up home games. They're the Gopher "Precious." Last time the Gopher gave up a home game was I believe the weekend Hobey Baker first laced up skates.

it's good to be King.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

If you consider being aloof and ignoring you arrogant, not only will you find Michgan fans arrogant, but MSU and OSU fans (mostly).

Ignore them. You'd think fans of a program with 6 titles wouldn't have such a huge chip on their shoulder.

As for Chicago, I could very well be wrong but I think some here are nuts if they don't think a tournament will sell well there. I'd go prefer going there 100x over going to Detroit and I imagine every non-UMi/MSU fan would as well, and the same could probably be said (perhaps at 20 to 1) for non-UM fans wanting to visit Chicago versus coming to St. Paul. Obviously those two cities must remain in the mix but I wouldn't rule out Chicago.

I lived in Chicago for 5 years and live in Milwaukee now. Just my opinion, but unless fans travel there, I don't think it will sell well. And I don't think that many people will travel there.

Without more teams from the IL/IN schools, you're pretty much banking on either the alumni living in Chicago getting into it (and how likely are they to be into college hockey?) or you're banking on the B1G tourney becoming an event (the way the Final Five was). I'm not betting either of those scenarios. As long as the only "local" team to Chicago is Wisconsin, I don't think you'll be able to get much traction there.

Exactly how I feel.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

The bar is high. The final 5 was bringing in about 17k a game...not far off the best national championship games.

Detroit or St Paul have a shot at these numbers...but the BT will have to be riding high those years.

true.

In my time in Chicago I went to Will's Northwoods Inn on Racine ave to catch badger hockey games w/other badger fans...problem was, I was the ONLY one in the bar wanting to watch Badger hockey at a Badger/Packer bar!!!!! and Will's is the most popular UW themed bar in Chicago. I don't know how that translates exactly but can tell you for UW football and roundball games that bar was packed to the gills...

I can't wait to move back to chicago next year but man, re: NCAA hockey it's a wasteland

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

I don't think anybody representing Michigan State has accidentally (and perhaps unwisely) stumbled into this thread yet, so I thought I'd just stop by. Hi, folks!

Regarding stylized initials: B1G, BI6, B16 or something else entirely? B1G is widely accepted for all of the other conference sports, but, since the hockey league only has six teams, I guess BI6 could work, too.

I mean, this is college hockey, and, by default, we're just different from everybody else.

Take you time with that. We have 17 months to figure it out.

When the event is in St. Paul one team will be centrally located (albeit one with a large fanbase but..), but the remainder will be closer to Chicago. For anyone not in the TC area why would they travel to STP but not to CHI? When the event is in Detroit (without grabbing a map) I would imagine although there are two local programs that is only one more than if the game were in CHI (UW is closer to CHI than DET) and again still the remainder of fans are forced to travel that don't already live there. Plus are there more UM, PSU, UW and OSU fans in the CHI area or in DET? If the TC or DET are such a fantastic location why isn't either area considered for the BTBBT?

However I am not saying it should be CHI over STP/DET or even be at their expense regularly, but the event should be scheduled there at least once and I myself would not be surprised to see it sell well.

I live in Milwaukee and am more likely to travel to St Paul to watch than Chicago. The United Center is a dive and will probably be fairly empty. Honestly, I don't think many fans will travel for this.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference

Someone said that relative to the BTHC? Jebus, you're sinking to JDUB depths here m'boy? :)

I was responding to your post that cited football revenue.

BTW, the dot-to-dot explanation was for you m'boy. ;)

Unfortunately, while I think that Chicago would make a lot of sense for many reasons, none of those reasons include getting butts in the seats.

Getting butts in the seats will not happen in Chicago for Big Ten Hockey, especially since the powers that be will be too greedy to price the tickets where they would need to be to even have a prayer.
