Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Fox is part owner of the BTN...do you really think FSN-North and FSN-Detroit are going to stop showing games? As it is right now the BTN owns the rights to Gopher games, they have first pick and FSN gets the rest and the Gophs had 33 games on TV. That is not going to change.
I would expect the only difference to be a higher number of games on the BTN due to their supposed plan to cover 2/3 of the conference games.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Channel 45 showed games a couple years ago maybe the WCHA could strike a deal with them.

I hope their HD is better than what it was for the State Tourney. I hope it comes to fruition.

If the ECAC or the Atlantic hockey can survive, why can't the CCHA and WCHA?

Also, Wisconsin could have left by themselves for this and I would have been totally fine. I must make my first hockey road trip to Madison before this conference gets underway.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

If you want to watch a bunch of fans jump around and not pay attention to the game (minus when they do their overrated Sieve Chant) there are plenty of HS games to see and they actually know what "Icing" is ;) :D :p

Sounds like a game at the Mooch.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

No...we sit on our hands unless we chant "Lets Go Gophers" or mock a "Junior College" come on now :D :p

Sounds about right. you forgot Gopher rejects. Which makes chanting Bulldog rejects all the more satisying.

BTW, people who say there won't be rivalries in the Big Ten are wrong. They will develop over time. Luckily for people in the WCHA we have our rivalries built in already.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

If you don't realize that there is an inherent rivalry between Minnesota/Wisconsin and Michigan/Michigan State you are nuts. The rivalries will come very easy.

College Hockey Tonight (with myself, Scott Williams - TV voice of Bemidji State hockey and guest host Eric Stromgren - beat writer for BSU with the Bemidji Pioneer) talk BTHC amongst other topics this week. You can listen online via the link in my sig. Thanks!

The Big Ten has been getting a pretty big stiffy over their recent success with bounceyball. Don't be surprised if hockey gets pre-empted by Northwestern-Iowa hoops.

B10 conference basketball games are rarely on Friday and Saturday nights, so there won't be many conflicts. Looking at Michigan's schedule last year, none of their league games were Friday night and only two were on Saturday night (plenty of Saturday afternoons, though).

The big move will also only allow the broadcast of one or two of the member schools at a time--a big shift from Minnesota and Wisconsin ALWAYS being broadcast, and the Michigan schools usually being on-the-air.

True. But if there are three B10 conference series on a given weekend, then I can see them covering one series on Friday and another on Saturday to give you a good chance of seeing your team on any given weekend. Or maybe doing doubleheaders with a 6:30 eastern start followed by an 8:00 central (9:00 eastern) start.

Unless they're going to come out with The Big 10.2 Network,

Always a possibility! Though that's even more airtime to fill.

To me, the dark possibility of all this is that they could start screwing with traditional Friday/Saturday night scheduling to accommodate the BTN. I like the fact that, with college hockey, you always know when your team will be playing and you can get into a routine. I've always thought that the Saturday afternoon/Sunday afternoon routine contributes to college football's and the NFL's popularity, whereas with other sports, your team could be playing any time.

BTN has at least 2 alternate channels already. So all this talk of scheduling conflicts is pointless.

Has the BTN used those alternate channels for anything other than football?

Careful, I posted that months ago and Frank the Tank told me I'm wrong.

That is why I took no credit and pawned it off on Jup...let Frank the Tank explain to him why he is wrong despite the fact that Jup is a member of the Gopher Media ;)

Yeah, I tried barking up that tree. He knows better than all of us hockey peons. He's the big bad football blogger (who pushed all his chips on the roulette table on "orange").

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

All eyes seem to be on Notre Dame now. Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson hints at a possible shakeup if Notre Dame decides to leave the CCHA. Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna said his league wouldn't be opposed to exploring expansion opportunities. Notre Dame may trigger a domino effect of realignment if they they make a move.

Jackson is a little unhappy and appears to be hypersensitive as to what effect B1G will have on LSSU, where he won two NCAA championships. IMHO Jackson probably needs to leave that up to the new commissioner and LSSU to figure out.

Lake Superior State coach Jim Roque viewed the announcement of B1G as positive for the sport. "I think it's good for college hockey," Roque said. "I think the Big Ten moniker's going to, obviously, provide more exposure to college hockey. I look at it this way: I'm in the water with all these schools. As the water rises, my boat rises, too".
