Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

I've said all along that I'm not in favor of this change. What I disagree with you on is what impact it will have on those who don't like it.

I believe there will be no noticeable impact and I believe that the vast majority of fans' support will not change at all.

*sigh* There you go being right again... at least partially. :D

I don't think this will effect MN and WI fans. There will be some grumbling for the first year or so about missing some rivalry games, but that will fade pretty quickly. Both teams have strong bases that will follow the team no matter where it goes. However I still believe it will impact the smaller schools left in the dust of these mighty big ten schools and do think some may be in danger of folding. That's where the bad blood will come into play.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Tom Serratore chimes in on B1G:

“We were all prepared for it,” Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore said. “We all knew it was going to happen when Penn State announced they were going to have a varsity program. I think it can be a positive thing for hockey if more schools can come on board because the Big Ten is going to be a very high-profile league.”

“From a WCHA standpoint it is tough to lose two high-profile teams, there’s no question about it,” Serratore said. “Those two programs brought a lot of visibility to the WCHA and it’s going to be tough to see them leave.”

“There are things that are out of your control and you can’t worry about things that are out of your control,” Serratore said. “For us (BSU) it’s going to be business as usual.”

Serratore expects the competition for college hockey prospects to remain the same with the existence of the Big Ten. Each fully funded NCAA Divsion I hockey team has a maximum of 18 scholarships, so drawing a blue-chip player ultimately comes down to each program’s recruiting efforts, facilities and a player’s personal choice.

“Those kids were going to go to those schools anyway (Minnesota, Wisconsin),” Serratore said. “I think we have 10 strong members in this league and we are still going to be a very strong league.”

I don't disagree with that at all.

It just seems that some on here want us to say that we won't follow our team anymore. That we are more loyal to college hockey or a conference or these boards than we are to our teams.

Not gonna happen.

I do not feel that Alzarez has done even a satisfactory job protecting and acting in the best interests of the hockey program while he has been the AD. I don't believe that he understands the unique character of the hockey program nor that he actually attempted to understand it. The only real way that I have to express my displeasure is to withhold any financial donations to athletics. I will continue to donate to the Univ. of Washington athletes, the University of Minnesota athletics (in memory of my father), and eventually to UI athletics. When I want to watch the Badgers, I'll travel to MN or let them come to me here in IC for football.

This is where I draw the line, this is my vote of no confidence in Alvarez, I refuse to implicitly support his idiotic regime any longer. Until Alvarez goes at AD, my direct donations to UW athletics and indirect support through the purchase of tickets and licensed merchandise stops.

I've sent my angry letters to the powers that be and no I don't expect them to matter one bit, but where my money goes I CAN control and limit and I intend to do just that.

I'm expressing my feelings, I don't expect others to blindly follow suit.

You could always send a check to the schools that remain in the WCHA. Better to let somebody like Bemidji have it instead of the tax man.

For the short term, I'm just going to give the money to the husky stadium renovation fund. May start sending checks to other schools in the future.

I fully support your right to all of the above. :)

I agree with you on Alvarez btw, but I place my support of the young men who wear the cardinal and white above any negative feelings I have towards Barry. It's about those individuals coming together to work towards a common goal.

Everything else is periphery, including what conference we play in.

The University of Wisconsin Hockey Program was here before Barry and will be long after Barry is pushing up dandelions.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Not sure if this has been thrown out there, but with youth hockey growing in most points West Coast, I could see some of the California schools exploring the idea of launching D-1 programs. Hell, there were several California kids drafted in the first round last year.

Also, this: Minnesota State University-Moorhead

HA! That would make things nice and confusing. Two MSUM's. Fantastic. The rebranding over a decade ago will end up having zero effect, seeming people will be forced to say just Moorhead or Mankato.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

If the WCHA stays at 12 teams after the BT teams leave then Bruce Mcleod is even dumber than I thought...

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Jim Roque of LSSU makes a great point about attendance at LSSU. He said that they will be losing two games a year that contribute to their attendance. So on that end they are fine. Unfortunately he doesn't mention how much they receive from the CCHA tournament.

I don't think when it is said and done the doom and gloom will be as bad as people think now.

Couple others that I'll throw out as potential startups:
Marquette
NDSU
UW-Green Bay
St. Norbert
Stanford
Cal
SDSU
Concordia (MN)

Just schools that might fit the mold, IMO.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

I'll make the math easy for you:

$0.

It's a negligible amount that basically covers the travel expenses for the playoffs and the Tournament. It's a far cry from the nice slice the WCHA teams get from their Tournament.

Wow...seriously the Michigan schools should be doing a happy dance The Ugly Helmets and their little sister are leaving. Sounds to me they will do better as a MAC like conference than they do as the CCHA.

Dont let Brent see any of this ;)

Easy math is easy!
I am much less worried about the future of the CCHA.
