Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

BTHC is old news.

We should stop wasting our time talking about it and spend the rest of our time trying to spread stupid rumors about America East, Big East, GLIAC, Ivy League, Liberty League, MAC, Northeast Conference, Northeast Ten, Northern Sun, and Patriot League all forming their own hockey conferences. Who wants to do meth?

LOL. All the years of people spreading BTHC rumors finally came to fruition. Classic post.

Well, I can name one conference that has every team in the conference sponsoring hockey, and and 11 of 12 members play together as a conference at that level... the ACHA D3's SEC Hockey Conference. :D

I was told there would be no meth.

America East came very close in 2005:
MAAC to Become Fifth D-I Hockey Conference - August 1997 article that mentions that the MAAC was almost the AEC or part of the ECAC. Found this one by total accident. Some nice rumors about future D-I schools in there too.
Rumor Mongering: America East Conference Hockey - November 2005 thread
Merrimack to the Atlantic Conference - January 2006 flamewar triggered by AEC rumor
America East Hockey is dead - May 2006 thread

There was a short lived Patriot League thread at one point:
Patriot League Hockey - May 2004 thread

I'm not researching the rest... but I'm sure they've all started flamewars at one point or another.

Pretend...I INVENTED IT...well actually your boy Hennesey did but I named it :D

And the shortened version is tConspiracy. I should know. I'm part of it (who do you think provides the smoke in the smoky room?)

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Following the lead of Anastos? You heard it here first: Walt Kyle, new Penn State Head Coach in 2012!

Walt Kyle head coach? I haven't heard any other rumors regarding a head coach yet. You would think they would be the first to hire before all the other openings. Why are they waiting so long to announce? Are some of the guys at the FF involved? Hack....Jackson?

PSU didn't want to over shadow the Frozen Four so they will wait until after the final game tonight.

JFR, Since Thursday my guess is PSU is interviewing candidates, it is when many schools do it to save money.

Joe Battista's always given late April-early May as the hire date, so it's getting there. As of about 3 weeks ago, it was down to 15 candidates, and while nothing's 100% verified, I've heard Cavanaugh, Jones, Schooley, Pooley, Gadowsky and possibly Jim Johnson/Derek Plante (the exact rumor was "former NHLer from UMD" and those seemed the two most likely) tossed around as names. Battista was at the FF, two of those names were obviously coaching there, with most of the rest around as well I'm sure, so I'm positive some talking was done.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Schools like LSSU and BSGU are using the Big 10 as a scapegoat for there lousy programs. The fact that you need to paly 3 schools a year to keep your program afloat is a sign that those school programs have way bigger problems.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

And so it begins: the start of the butt-hurt hockey conference: (saw this at HF, take it for what it's worth)

@julierobinheymer Wow...Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick says they're exploring conference realignment for the hockey program. "Need to be with like institutions"

I've heard similar things, but I think there is a possibility that Notre Dame may try to head to Hockey East.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

To me, this anti-B1G still comes down to North Dakota...if they don't want it, it doesn't happen.

I've always believed this. They are the jewel of the western non-B1G teams.

With regards to Notre Dame, if any team could survive as an independent and become a de-facto 7th B1G team it would be the Irish. My fear is that it could instigate a complete crash of the CCHA with NMU bailing for the WCHA with another team (UAF maybe) leaving only 2 stable western conferences (WCHA and B1G) and a CCHA that will slowly wither away similarly to the demise of the CHA.

Pretty much. Instead of 23 teams in two conferences and no room for expansion, you'll have 18 (6 BT, 12 WCHA), 3 MAC schools with differing amounts of energy they've put into their programs and a couple DII schools with no homes...meaning no room for expansion.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

But does HE want Notre Dame?

My estimation is no.

Hockey East is in a pretty comfortable position as it is. Effectively, Hockey East's competition for "best league" just consolidated into one, the Big Whatever (and more importantly, it wasn't in their region at all, leaving them the unquestioned #1). Sure, the rump WCHA and CCHAs have good teams left, but I don't think that Hockey East need fear the rump leagues overtaking them.

So with that in mind, what does Notre Dame add? An improvement in Hockey East's national scope (though how much of an improvement is debatable), in exchange for a massive increase in travel budget (even if Notre Dame were to come along with a partner). I can easily see some in the low end of the league (Providence, UML, Merrimack, Northeastern and UMA) objecting, and they have enough votes in there to scuttle any potential addition to the league; I just can't see the gains from Notre Dame's entry convincing any of those teams enough to vote to marginalize themselves further.
