Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

Is Miami close enough to do a home and home in one weekend? Other than that, I agree completely.

4 hours from Miami to Ann Arbor, so it's doable, but maybe best served for a Friday night/Sunday Afternoon series, to help accomdate the Big Ten Network :)

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

I think there will be a lot of pressure for Minnesota to keep playing the in-state schools. They'll be able to get favorable scheduling contracts with them as well, and I think we'll see 2 or 3 for 1s. There could always be home/home series as well with Mankato and SCSU. Perhaps something like 2 years @ Minnesota, 1 year @ SCSU, 1 year home/home. That way, SCSU/Mankato could still get a Minnesota game/series every other year.

I am not convinced this is going to happen. In my opnion SCSU will only want to play Minnesota if they get equal home games. SCSU needs home games to make money and even if they play a smaller atlantic hockey or CCHA team it is better than playing on the road at Minnesota. I highly doubt Minnesota will want to give them equal home games.

If that is the case, then SCSU will be in the same boat as UND. IMO, 3 home games/5 road games every 4 years isn't all that bad of a deal. Saying that, I don't know if Minnesota and SCSU would even be up for that.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

I get the feeling that SCSU is sort of like NMU. A middle of the pack team, generally in the hunt for NCAA's but winds up somewhere between 12 to 20th. Heavily relies on "Big Names" to pack the building for attendance.

Am I wrong in my assumption?

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

From what I have heard the only no vote for the BTHC was Minnesota. Everybody else is strongly in favor of starting up the BTHC.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

Both Minnesota and Wisconsin will want to play every team in minnesota if BTHC happens.
The new conference should convince nebraska and iowa to start hockey programs.
I would much prefer seeing a 8 team league than a 6 team league.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

Why do people think u of m won't give equal games? Fsn covers the in state games and minnesota isn't selling out their arena outside of playing wisco or und. Short term I don't know why they wouldn't schedule at least scsu and mankato where at the very least they could do home and home series.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

It's a page straight from the Big 10 playbook. Don't ever schedule a non-conference game against a team you don't know for sure you can beat. And if you must, make it at home. Typical Big 10... that's why they're a weaker conference in football.

Is that why the SEC wins the NC ever year? Have you seen their NC schedules of late, more importantly how many BCS games they actually play outside their own realm?

And ftr I am strongly against a BTHC.

Sadly we have no say.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

I would. i will NEVER cheer for Penn State. I would root for NoDak over Penn State. They are the school that brought this abortion of a conference on us. I already hate Wisconsin so I can't hate them any more for unleashing that fat bastard of an AD on us.

Yeah, sorry for wanting an NCAA hockey program.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

I heard after the coaches meeting this year the BTHC is going to be officially announced. I also heard PSU's arena is ahead of schedule a so it can happen a year earlier. Has anybody else heard this or is my source wacked?

To paraphrase a friend, "I heard" is modern journalism talk for "my source (if it exists) don't know s&*t."

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

So last night I was watching 3 games on TV, UND/CC, UM/WMU and Cornell/Dart. The attendance at the later 2 was pathetic. Here's my point. The WCHA will survive because UND will always at the F5 and rodentsota, as much as I hate the place, is the center of hockey in the US, so the F5 will always have great attendance. The CCHA has sucky tourney attendance anyway, so that won't change when UM, OSU and M St depart. The B10 tourney success will hinge on UW and the rodents making it. Those 2 teams have by far the largest fan bases of the B10 teams.

I also think the B10 hockey conference will add credibility to college hockey in general. It would be wise for the B10 to telecast n/c games involving B10 teams to help the sport out in general, but they are greedy and selfish and that probably won't happen.

Neither here nor there, but the SEC keeps winning because they sign 5 players to everyone else's 4 and cut the 5th guy who didn't pan out. Probably not something that would transfer well to hockey, especially since college hockey has juniors to contend with while football has...arena ball?

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt II - The Exodus

So we have several possible scenario's.
What's the worst case, what's the best case and what's the most likely. Any RPI grads out there willing to try on that one?

I think the BTHC starts out very benign, but it gets ugly three years out.

I got your back and I will always root for Penn State over NoDak. I'll also take you guys over Michigan and the Rodents - EVERY TIME!

This conference is a done deal and I've moved on. I've loved the WCHA since I first started following Badger hockey in the 80's, mainly because it wasn't the Big 10 and I could see different opponents/rivals than what we got in all the other sports.

Fact of the matter is though that others have decided what's best for us and I'm a Badger fan before I'm a WCHA fan and wherever they play and whomever they play, I will remain a Badger fan first and foremost.

I get that many are disappointed, both fans of member schools and those that will remain in the old conferences, but time to grieve and move on. We've known this was coming for a couple of years now, so it's not like it's a shock.

Welcome Penn State! I'm getting a little sick of everyone trashing the Big 10 and I'm starting to turn insular to the point that I'm about ready to get a little arrogant. Not yet though...

PS - It wouldn't surprise me to find out that the Koch brothers are behind this. Think about it, the rich attempt to get richer and the poor may have to fold their programs...

Good. No one can blame us for this crap then. Thanks Wisconsin and Penn State for bringing Armageddon to college hockey.

Hey, just like the prison guards in the camps, MSU, UM and tOSU and just as guilty for standing by and doing nothing.

Thanks to Minnesota though for being humanity's champion! :D
