Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

OKAY Skate79... OMG .. I was speaking in general terms - using 100 as an average - sometimes there have been less than 100 at the other Boston area women's college games at BU, BC, and Northeastern ( which technically, Harvard is in Cambridge and not Boston)and sometimes there have been over 200 fans. To read my post EXACTLY "Compared to local Boston teams" I was not directly speaking of Harvard which may average 500, yet I have also attended games at Harvard with less. You can check the USCHO Attendance stats. (see below)Northeastern had an incredible average attendance boost with the Fenway game adding over 6000 for that one game.

The POINT is that there is more community fan support at Dartmouth. People have the same choices of "doing other things" instead of going to a women's college hockey team such as staying home to watch tv that has absolutely nothing to do with location in a city v. country.. To each their own - there are dozens of factors involving college choices - location being one of them.
The city v. country mouse argument each has merits for prospective recruits
but only a starting point for what makes a good "fit". That is why official visits are so important to get a feel for the campus environment.

This is the Big Green Dartmouth Women's Hockey thread - we appreciate our community fan support especially when the team is struggling. We prefer to encourage the team and not belittle individual players or coaches. Last year's graduating class had a wonderful combo of impact players who didn't always get the individual recognition they deserved because they were stronger as a "team" and showed it by winning the ECAC tournament last year. Call it chemistry or just comraderie, it worked. Maybe its not working at the moment, we just hope they keep trying.

I haven't analyzed any data, but I'm guessing that if one looked through teams in the past that graduated their primary goaltender and three defensemen, more often than not, those teams struggle the next year, particularly early. It takes a while to get everyone in synch on defense, and if a team's defense struggles, it seems to impact the rest of the team.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Ok, I know women who grew up in rural area who couldn't wait to get away, and I know women who grew up in rural areas who hated cities and went north every weekend while working in Boston.

I have no idea exactly what the divide is among women's hockey players from rural areas.

But I do feel like I listened to more than a few of Brian's USCHO Game of the Week second intermission interviews with Dartmouth or SLU players in which the athlete said they choose so-and-so school because it had a small-town environment just like home.

But I can't rule out the possibility that you're right, this is a huge disadvantage, and that these schools are picking from a smaller pool. The idea that Cornell's rise came more at Dartmouth's expense than Harvard's makes a lot of sense.

To clarify...I do agree with you that for some SLU/Clarkson/Dartmouth's location is actually a drawing card...and most often because they feel more comfortable in an environment that may be more similar to home (ie small town, etc). That was part of the point I was actually trying to make about the potential impact of the rise of some programs like Cornell & Clarkson more on Dartmouth than on schools like Harvard.

Statistically, if you look at census data though, Canada's population is actually more urban than that of the US, with a high proportion of the country's population in major cities close to the border. With a disproportionate percentage of D1 recruits coming from the Greater Toronto Area, and other cities including Ottawa and London, most of these (though certainly not all) would generally find being at least close to a major population centre more appealing, if everything else was roughly equal--especially if they are going to be far from home.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

One very appealing attraction to playing for Dartmouth is the community support shown in the above average attendance at the Women's games -- even when the team is struggling, the faithful still come - this week - over 900 watched the Harvard game and over 660 for the midweek Boston College game - other weekend games they average even more. Compared to local Boston teams that are lucky to get 100 - half being parents and family -- and there certainly is a more fun environment to enjoy a game - imagine a real snack bar! Dartmouth has alot to offer academically and there is alot more to the college experience than athletics - and recruiting isn't as much an issue as admission.

Adversity is tough - its not fun to lose.. the girls feel the disappointment without some of the unkind comments made here. Life's lessons may hurt at times - remember some days you can be the pigeon and other times you are the statue.. Maybe the Big Green will miss the playoffs, maybe they can have a miraculous come back, whatever happens, they still have the most loyal attendance and best fan support in the EAST!! GO BIG GREEN!!!

I certainly agree that the strong involvement of the community with the team (and vice versa), resulting in large, enthusiastic crowds would be a tremendous feature, and something that is most unlikely in a large city program.

Some of the best lessons in life do come with adversity, and no doubt having strong community support behind you will be most helpful in dealing with those short term obstacles.

That is cause half the country lives in what those of us elsewhere in Canada call the "centre of the universe" aka "Hogtown" aka "The GTA" aka 'Taraanta' :p

Yup...if God were gonna give Canada an enema....:D

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Nice one 5-4. Mad about losing #3?

Ya we are a little sensitive out here now, especially given the plugs we got in return. The 10 player swap of a number of years ago featuring Doug Gilmour for Gary Leeman still haunts us today. Sure hope the Sutterite Colony knows what they are doing....

BTW ....Go Dartmouth! Your community support of your team is legendary.

Agree, go Darthy. Actually cheer on any Ivy school to do well.

Ya Thanks for the update:) we really appreciate it:( . All three stars for the loafs last night were newcomers. Giguere, Phanuef & Sjostrom. Lovely!

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....Dartmouth.

Good discussion. Good input.
Keep digging, Green!

I am wishing all players in the Olympics well! But especially our 'Turin
' Olympians, Cherie Piper and Gillian Apps on Team Canada. Too, I will miss Katie Weatherston and Sarah Parsons, others, who played their college careers at Dartmouth and competed in the 2006 Games and earlier for whatever nation. Thank you for so much!

For Cherie and Gillian, it must be very special to represent their country at an Olympics, and it must be even more special to represent their country at an Olympics held at home. But over-the-top it is when all of the above is true and the game they play is their country's National Pastime and literally originated in their own back yard!

:D NICE WIN! Sarah Toupal isn't going out (Senior - two goals and an assist, tonight) without a fight! Makes 13 points. Great work, Sarah! Great work Dartmouth. A game that we needed. Keep the ball rolling, Green.

Actually USCHO scoreboard shows it 6-3 Dartmouth, final. ECAC and college don't have final. Nor does Internet carrier (of the game) Neu Lion or whatever that is, shows no third period here at 9:45 P M.

Make that 2 assists (we can coin a new phrase-the Toupal hat trick: 2 goals, 2 assist and 2 penalties) Outstanding game for Toups who is one of the team's most consistent players but doesn' often have the points to show for it.

A solid finish for the Big Green which was refreshing and reassuring.
Lacina had a strong game, making several big saves and stopping a penalty shot.
Cunningham got the game winner early in the 3rd. Parsons scored on a well-placed shot after battling with 3 defenders. shortly thereafter Dumais scored a breakaway goal on a nice pass from Toupal.

Senior Night today - always emotional and bittersweet. Another must-win game for Darty.

Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

When I submitted my post the score was shown as 3-2. It was late and I assumed the game over even though I couldn't get final stats, etc., from web site or anywhere. Even the reliable, 'Scores and Highlights' thread herein wasn't following scores, action, last night (maybe at the Beanpot...!)

Finally USCHO 'scooped' the competition with the final score on their 'Scoreboard'.
Kudos (Cudos?)!

It wasn't over, thus my later comment.

Sure feels good. Feels like all participated and our team was out there living up to the vision many of us have had for them. YES! Sarah - ' Toups ', was the one got them going it sure seems...she sure was strong, but, too, don't you think is always a team out there working together that produces great results?

Also, 1,000 folks or so showed up to suport the 'Pink' women win this important one over a strong and recently on a roll, Yale team.

Cheers all around!
Go Green Go ! :D

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Senior night, another 1000+ crowd and 4 points on the weekend.

So moving to see Sarah "Quack" Kennedy start in goal. Having endured much physical pain and mental anguish over serious physical problems, she has stayed with the team as a practice goalie and motivating force. She has given Dartmouth her all. Truly a class act.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Can you elaborate for those of us not familiar with her story?
Certainly. Won all 4 games she started Freshman year but had hip problems; had surgery for tear visible on MRI, but it turned out there were serious underlying problems. Had more surgeries but problems were not repairable and at some point was told essentially that she had no business walking, let alone playing goal. In spite of this she tried playing through the pain, hoping to make a comeback, until it got to the point that she realized the pain was affecting her ability to perform. For the sake of the team she came to accept her limited role on the bench, but she also became a team leader off the ice. At the end of Jr season she thought she wouldn't be able to wear the jersey again.
Yet this past summer she began a new pain management approach and was able to suit up for practice and warm ups this season. However, since she was not able to do the down and up movements needed to tend goal, she couldn't compete.
She got the start on Sr. Night with the idea that she would come out after her first save (unfortunately none of her teammates were there to coral the rebound after she made the save on a partial breakaway, so Brown scored on their 2nd shot.) She got a huge ovation from the fans in honor of her dedication to Dartmouth hockey.
