Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Certainly. Won all 4 games she started Freshman year but had hip problems; had surgery for tear visible on MRI, but it turned out there were serious underlying problems. Had more surgeries but problems were not repairable and at some point was told essentially that she had no business walking, let alone playing goal. In spite of this she tried playing through the pain, hoping to make a comeback, until it got to the point that she realized the pain was affecting her ability to perform. For the sake of the team she came to accept her limited role on the bench, but she also became a team leader off the ice. At the end of Jr season she thought she wouldn't be able to wear the jersey again.
Yet this past summer she began a new pain management approach and was able to suit up for practice and warm ups this season. However, since she was not able to do the down and up movements needed to tend goal, she couldn't compete.
She got the start on Sr. Night with the idea that she would come out after her first save (unfortunately none of her teammates were there to coral the rebound after she made the save on a partial breakaway, so Brown scored on their 2nd shot.) She got a huge ovation from the fans in honor of her dedication to Dartmouth hockey.

Dayglo, this is a great story and one that needs to told and retold to every athlete who thinks that being on a team is some sort of 'birthright'. I hope the team gives her some sort of honor at their annual banquet if you have one. And I wish her the very best in her future endeavors and hope that modern medicine will come up with a solution so that she can lead an active, normal life.

Also, a tip of the cap to Sarah Parsons, a Massachusetts girl, for coming back to play her senior year despite a foot injury. Apparently according to a Dartmouth fan I spoke to at the H-D game, she has not fully recovered but desperately wanted to play her senior season. That's dedication.

Thank you. This injury is far too common with modern butterfly goaltenders. Hopefully this will not be something that plagues her for life.

A Very noble gesture by the Coaches.

Indeed, Pars has done extremely well, having scored her 150th career point this weekend:

"Senior co-captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) tallied her 150th career point and the Dartmouth women's hockey team came away with a 4-2 win over Brown on Senior Night at Thompson Arena."

Besides that, she plays many roles on the team and is very unselfish with the puck.

I know many players on other teams have injuries that aren't apparent (and don't want them made public) - we should all stop and appreciate those who play hurt, sick and during particularly difficult academic times.

I'd say most people take things for granted until they experience something like this (in person or someone close to them). Here is the link to the college's story about Sarah Kennedy:

Thanks for sharing her story dayglo. Those athletes who achieve on the scoreboard are always well recognized. I think it's just as important to applaud those athletes who may not be well known outside their teams, but whose dedication and perseverance under extreme adversity on behalf their team is outstanding. All the best to Sarah after graduation.

Thanks, also, dayglo.

Agree,too, about unsung heroes.
Probably all athletes have played at least a little bit hurt and can empathize.

I had not known about Sarah Parson's injury.
Explains a lot.
Soooo had wanted to see her play again at the Olympics.
I am impressed at such unselfishness by someone thus denied, both 'some-ones'!

Dartmouth wins over Union 4-0. Video streaming via Union facilities was brutal at best to watch. No audio. Can't believe they would have such poor quality to their webcast.

Congratulations to Whitney Woodcox on her first NCAA Shutout.

Heading up to the north country for their two final games Dartmouth plays at Clarkson who defeated them and then at St Lawrence whom they defeated earlier in the season (both those games were at home for the Green.) Dartmouth is currently tied as to the numbers with Yale; but since Dartmouth defeated Yale twice this season such a tie of numbers at the end of the season would therefore put Dartmouth in the ECAC Tournament.

But here we have Colgate. They are one point behind the tied Dartmouth and Yale and have games at home coming up against Union and RPI; lost to RPI and defeated Union earlier on the road . Yale plays away at as good a Quinnipiac team as we have yet to see them field (although is barely 'away', a short drive up route 10 in CT-) and finally Princeton away, both were losses for Yale earlier in the season.

Having trouble getting the eight horse into the gate.

I attempted a prediction about two weeks ago. Ooph! I was way off. I will, nevertheless, attempt another here.

Without the Eli (Goalie & Kazmaier nominee, Jackee Snickeris perhaps especially) getting their 'groove' back, Colgate looks best-likeliest! Union a more likely win for the Raiders than any contest Yale or Dartmouth have coming up (but lost at RPI 10-4). Such a win would give them eighteen points-one over Yale and Dartmouth should they, Dartmouth and Yale, be defeated across the board in their final two games.

Dartmouth looks next best/likeliest. They defeated St Lawrence earlier in Hanover and might well win again in Canton. Maybe one might characterize St Lawrence recently as in a 'swoon'. But I don't count on such. A win by Dartmouth would give them nineteen points and Colgate eighteen were all else to stay the same as outlined above.

But as always at the end of the season, is a horse race. While we wish, "may the best team win", play here in the 'stretch' can perhaps be seen as a test of character/will and a precursor of the season to come-or even the nearby playoffs themselves occasionally!

Of course I wish Dartmouth only the best. It will be a very tough weekend,
It's unfortunate they we didn't take care of things earlier in the season (e.g the big lead we gave up at Colgate and had to settle for a tie; many close games lost that could have gone the other way "if only.") But what is, is. I hope that the team has learned enough from these past situations to get at least 1 W this coming weekend. Go Green! We'll be with you in spirit.

Alas for the Green, were eliminated by losing 4-3 at St Lawrence today. Didn't get off to the quick start (relatively 'quick') as at Clarkson Friday night. But clearly put their heart into it despite seeming fruitlessness of effort, perhaps, as Colgate was winning (at home) and even a tie by Colgate AND a Dartmouth win would not get them the eighth slot. Nevertheless, out shot the Larries 20 to 5 in the final frame. Good on yer!

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Many cheers for the senior class for an outstanding college career.

"Seniors [Sarah]Parsons, [Jenna] Cunningham, [Sarah] Toupal, [Mariel] Lacina, Sarah Kennedy . . . and Sue Schmitz . . . competed in their final game. The class of 2010 finished their careers with three trips to the NCAA Tournament, two ECAC Hockey Tournament titles, an Ivy League championship and a ECAC Hockey Regular Season title."

Thank you all for choosing Dartmouth!
