Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010
Dayglo, this is a great story and one that needs to told and retold to every athlete who thinks that being on a team is some sort of 'birthright'. I hope the team gives her some sort of honor at their annual banquet if you have one. And I wish her the very best in her future endeavors and hope that modern medicine will come up with a solution so that she can lead an active, normal life.
Also, a tip of the cap to Sarah Parsons, a Massachusetts girl, for coming back to play her senior year despite a foot injury. Apparently according to a Dartmouth fan I spoke to at the H-D game, she has not fully recovered but desperately wanted to play her senior season. That's dedication.
Certainly. Won all 4 games she started Freshman year but had hip problems; had surgery for tear visible on MRI, but it turned out there were serious underlying problems. Had more surgeries but problems were not repairable and at some point was told essentially that she had no business walking, let alone playing goal. In spite of this she tried playing through the pain, hoping to make a comeback, until it got to the point that she realized the pain was affecting her ability to perform. For the sake of the team she came to accept her limited role on the bench, but she also became a team leader off the ice. At the end of Jr season she thought she wouldn't be able to wear the jersey again.
Yet this past summer she began a new pain management approach and was able to suit up for practice and warm ups this season. However, since she was not able to do the down and up movements needed to tend goal, she couldn't compete.
She got the start on Sr. Night with the idea that she would come out after her first save (unfortunately none of her teammates were there to coral the rebound after she made the save on a partial breakaway, so Brown scored on their 2nd shot.) She got a huge ovation from the fans in honor of her dedication to Dartmouth hockey.
