Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

I'll have to take a rain check another time since we won't be there...have to wait till Provincials maybe.

So who you rooting for today ;)

Rooting for many colors these days. ;) Making impartial predictions is not the same as rooting for a team. I distinguish between the two.

Provincials it is.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if McGill lost all three this weekend, though they do still have the advantage of having played a significant number of games now, while they are the first college team any of the Ivys will have faced this season.

Dartmouth 4 McGill 2
Harvard 4 McGill 1
Yale 4 McGill 2

:p :p :p

LOL. Have you ever seen the Timmys US Extra Large....its a family size.

When south of the Border always have to remember to order a size down. Timmy's are invading various locales in the US more and more. The other day even noticed them advertised along one of the major Interstates.

Look out Dunkin. The invasion is coming.
Canucks run on Timmy. ;) (The coffee not the donuts :D :D )

Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Winning at Colgate in the second- 3/0; Woodcox in goal from the start.
Cornell impressive-maybe. See how the 2 apiece tie in the second (with Harvard today) plays out. Smothered the Green certainly but w/o a first hand report I don't know if perhaps goalie change is/was the problem or Cornell is that much better. Or Cornell came out strong and Dartmouth flat. Seem more like themselves today. Perhaps (likely, is my guess) Coach was some 'stern' (with them) after yesterday's loss. Too, where all of a sudden came-from... two new Cornellian's matriculating this Fall (and Jenner in the spring? ) Will raise some eyebrows? Fortino and Rougeau accounting for assists or goals in each of three scores yesterday (Fortino 1 goal unassisted ; Rogeau 1 goal and 1 asist- assisted on Catherine White's goal.) Was just good fortune?

It wasn't a Dartmouth goaltending problem. Cornell pretty much maintained control of the play much of the game. Can't tell you if Dartmouth came out flat as it was the only game I've seen them play this season (obviously), but I'm sure that it being Dartmouth's first game of the season hurt them a bit. With that said, Cornell is much stronger defensively than prior years. We beat Harvard 4-3 today and outshot them 26-19.

Cornell played very well Fri - best I've seen them in 10 years (admittedly only in Hanover until yesterday). Results vs. Harvard indicate this is not a fluke. Mazzotta had a great game in net. (Interestingly, she and Lacina come from the same town, played on opposing teams and developed quite a rivalry before college.)

I think Dartmouth did come out flat and also stayed flat. How much was due to the the jitters of a young team, and getting used to playing with one another and the systems? The lack of success on the PP was esp disappointing as this was expected to be a big strength. where was the highly touted offense?

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Darty obviously came out much better vs. the 'gate and it appeared like it would be a blow out. The big guns - Cunningham, Trunzo, Parsons, Foley did their share.
Woodcox looked good in the first period. The game seemed to take a turn after a Colgate injury in the 2nd. Hope the player is okay.
Minnick made some slick moves on our young goalie to score twice.
Dartmouth dominated OT (in part do to Colgate penalty). Set up the power play and were passing well but could not get one in the net. A disappointment for us and a moral victory for Colgate.
Only 1 point on the weekend, who'd have thunk?

If its any consolation, we also held Mercyhurst to zero goals on the PP. Our penalty kill has definitely been an early season strength. I hope it continues.

Likely some, was a long ride home from Cornell and Colgate. This weekend St Lawrence and Clarkson come to Hanover. Number two and seven nationally (Dartmouth is off the board.) May be even more 'trouble' for the Green.

Writer on the college site attempts to put a good light on this season's start comparing it to the opening the Olympian's had in 2006/2007. Could be a stretch. That was against Mercyhurst with the likes of Apps, Weatherston, Piper (with Parsons and Cunningham freshmen.)

Also Dartmouth as shown is strong forward this year with several returning scorers (see above.) The defense however has only one player (Sue Schmitz) with extensive experience; of seven on defense three are freshmen . Maybe they, or two of them...might eventually make such an impact as freshmen defensemen Fortino and Rogueau did (right away) for Cornell. See above how we fared against this duo. One writer (on the Cornell site), said, " The addition of Rougeau and Fortino was huge. You would think they were veterans out there."
Hmmm ? Perhaps so . . .

If my guess is correct, also, I'm thinking Coach would like to see Woodcox work out permanently in goal; which adds even more need for some kids to step up, mature quickly for this current corps of Dartmouth' s skaters.

Impressively, Dartmouth leading St Lawrence 4-2 with the game almost complete- two goals for Dumais.

Some programs perhaps, 'cherry picking' in the off season. Thibault, Fortino, Taylor Horton...say; I don't recall immediate impact players emerging as quickly, or as prominantely, years past. Maybe again like one commentator (above) observed- "... You would think they were veterans out there."

Thibault, while a senior (transfer from UConn) leads all scorers at Clarkson (and of two goals vs Harvard tonight scored one, assisted on the second); Taylor Horton (Freshman at R P I) leads the Engineers in scoring (and tonight added five points to her total against Colgate) while Fortino's impact at Cornell can easily be seen alone in the recent Dartmouth/Cornell results.

Mmmm?

I don't understand the problem here that you are implying.

Maybe a back-handed way of complimenting opposing coaching staffs on their ability to recruit more top players for this season?

It's probably not coincidental that all three coaching staffs have great reputations as being really nice, as well as straightforward people, by prospective recruits.

Well there have been some, certainly at Dartmouth (classes of '05 and '06 come to mind) and Harvard who has had a large number of Olympic and national team skaters (Botts, Rugger, Chu, Corriero, etc). And I imagine other teams I'm not as familiar with.

A different Dartmouth team yesterday than last weekend. Coaches and players must have had a busy week.
A couple bad turn overs in our own end led to the 2 SLU goals, but Dartmouth bounced back well this time. Solid game overall, other than those couple minutes. Passing was better, D was clearing rebounds, offensively, players were placing their shots more carefully (many aimed at far corner or just missed over the net) and finishing when it counted.
Let's hope we have a consistently good game against Clarkson today (I'm sure we'll need it.)

Piper scores PP goal in 4-Nations Cup final, now 4-1 Canada in the 3rd.
