Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

I think what was lost in translation was the fact that I was being sarcastic in reference to Dartmouth being the only Ivy school worthy of tournament consideration. Remember the school in Cambridge, MA? Think they deserve some consideration?

Skate, who would ever think you'd be sarcastic!;) I for one never count out the team from Cambridge, MA. And I doubt that Papulaisle would either.

I can see why Dartmouth would be ranked lower this year - obvious reasons like losing our 3-year starting goalie to graduation, along with some very good skaters. We have a young team, with talented newcomers by the sounds, but even talented freshmen have to adjust to college and in particular, learn systems to play Dartmouth hockey. (I remember how frustrating that was for the '09's their first season, as talented as they were!) In the long run they will do well, but we should have an interesting season ahead.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Was surprised to see Reaghan Fischer is no longer on the roster. That should be a big loss, as she was the leading rookie scorer last season.

Also another freshman from last season, Mills, is missing, too.

They are taking the year off from school. Expect them back next season.

LOL. More than a little surprised that D would have not been able to attract a graduating PWHL goalie (or equivalent from elsewhere in N.A.) instead of one playing Midget hockey in Ontario...the top goalies in the class from Ontario committed to Princeton, Brown, Qpac, Syracuse RMU, Elmira, and Laurier in Ontario.

While Whitby was one of the better Midget teams (I did see them play a few times), its quite a drop in talent from the PWHL to Midget.

Lacina is a very able starter, but with her upcoming graduation, Dartmouth fans had better hope they can land another top tier recruit at the position for next season to challenge for the title.

Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Dartmouth scrimmages McGill this afternoon at 4 PM in Hanover.
McGill was National Champion of Canada in 2008-2009. Are currently ranked first in Canada and have a record of 5-3 so far this season, with wins in the US at Providence, Vermont and Northeastern; won 7-4 at Providence. Thier only US loss was to St Lawrence, 2-1. Go against Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale here on consecutive days. All these matches are away for them.

I had neglected to mention, Jessica Gagner- freshman forward from London, Ontario as another up and coming freshman skater.

See below- from Dartmouth Sports Information:

" ...Played one season at Breck School in Minnesota, before moving to London, Ont., and spent three years with the Bluewater Hawks of the Provincial Women's Hockey League ... also competed for St. Thomas Aquinas in London for three seasons ... won the Ontario Federation for Secondary School Athletics championship in 2006-07 with a perfect 11-0 season ... was a Minnesota All-State selection as a freshman ... was a two-time offensive player of the year award winner at St. Thomas Aquinas ... team captain for the Bluewater Hawks in her final season after being a two-time assistant captain ... "

"...brother Sam currently plays center for the Edmonton Oilers and was the sixth pick overall in the NHL Draft in 2007 ... posted 49 points for the Oilers as a rookie in 2007-08 and 41 points this past season ... father played 15 seasons in the NHL for seven different franchises and is the director of player development for the Vancouver Canucks, which is the rival of his son's team the Oilers ... knows classmate Sally Komarek from 3-on-3 hockey in Minnesota during her freshman year at Breck. "

Dartmouth is ranked #8 in the Oct. 19 USCHO poll; #6 in the Oct. 20 USA Today/USA Hockey poll.

Expect McGill to go 2-1 on this road trip. Dartmouth will prevail over them but the Martletts will win over Harvard and Yale.

I agree with 23Fan actually....McGill is nowhere near the team it has been in the past without the Olympians on D and in net. While there are still a few top quality players, McGill now lacks the depth of most D1 teams, as perhaps suggested by the fact they went to OT with Vermont.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if McGill lost all three this weekend, though they do still have the advantage of having played a significant number of games now, while they are the first college team any of the Ivys will have faced this season.

Agree that McGill is not as deep as last year, but still a formidable squad despite losing three big stars (Labonte, Ward, Leclerc). Their assistant coach has been with them for years, so she knows how to coach this team. Even with the loss tonight, they are still 3-2 for the year against D1 teams, both those losses coming against top 10 teams from last season. The game with Harvard could go either way, but McGill will win over Yale. Still sticking with my 2-1 road trip prediction.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Dartmouth 4-2 after 3, with empty net goal by Amanda Trunzo.
Overall Darty looked good. McGill came out flat in the first . . . we really outskated, outplayed and outshot them. They were opportunistic to get the game tied up at 2. They picked it up toward the end of the game but Darty kept the puck out of the net in the 3rd. The "d" did well cleaning up loose pucks around the net, particularly toward the end of the game.

Goaltending looked a bit shaky - hopefully just early jitters. (Lacina and Woodcox split the game.) It was also one of those situations where it's difficult for a 'tender to not see the puck for long periods of time, then face an opponent suddenly on the doorstep. Woodcox will need to work on preventing rebounds, but this should have been a big confidence boost for her.

All in all, the Dartmouth faithful were pleased with such a first game; the team looks like it's coming together really well.

OK, I'll bite...want to bet a Timmys on it...or perhaps even a Sam Adams if it can wait till next season? ;)

Yes, McGill only lost to Top 10 teams last season, but that was with the big stars they no longer have. Conversely, they have not beaten a Top 10 team either. There is no way at all McGill will beat Harvard...look for a convincing Harvard win by at least 2 today.

The Yale game could still go either way, but I'll predict a tie there, and wouldn't be surprised either if Yale prevailed. I suspect that one will be a low scoring affair so the outcome may depend on penalties.

Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Glad to get a first-hand account.

Statistics seem to indicate Woodcock turned back all attempts while she was in goal (the final 27.41 minutes of 60.)

Last year Dartmouth lost five of their top 10 scorers to graduation, and for other reasons (rated as to points.) This includes Fischer as discussed above.Total points were 288 for the season for those top 10 players; lost were 142 points of production (49%.)

As to goals alone, the top 10 scorers accounted for 113 of 125 goals scored in 2008/2009; lost production was 46 (41%.)

Also as to goals only, the leading scorer- Trunzo, number two in scoring, Cunningham and the number four goal scorer, Parsons, remain. They accounted for 52 goals (46%) of the 113 goals scored last year by the top ten scorers.
