I think it’s more than others think. I know it can be difficult at times even here in somewhat liberal Anchorage, I can’t imagine what it’d be like in rural Wisconsin or Pennsylvania.

You may be right. The guy interviewed in Bemidji wouldn't even give his name because everyone he knew was a Trumper. He voted early and just kept quiet.

Lest we forget Trump only win WI by like 22k votes.

Biden signs are starting to show up in numbers here in rural WI about 50 min from Madison. Over 70% of eligible voters in my county voted in '16, and more of them voted for HRC than dump--by a few hundred votes. Dump still has the decided edge in signs, but I think the votes are here. Hope.

Given what conservatives have become I assume there are many surreptitious Democrats in red areas. As conservatives become more vile -- and more violent -- smart people will go dark, while voting (and contributing) in higher numbers.

Kentucky has a good amount of these people. I personally have a McGrath yard sign, complete with Beshear and Biden bumper stickers on my car. I’m really not afraid of someone attacking me over my views, but I’m also a soft-spoken white guy whose shaved head probably makes me look like a neo-nazi or army recruit, so I really wouldn’t be someone’s target anyways. My wife had the unfortunate event of a middle-aged guy approaching her in the parking lot of Meijer when she borrowed my last car with the Sanders sticker on it. Luckily, our lesbian friend, who is an avid follower of politics, quickly refuted his stupid, uneducated bulls—it and told him to be on his way.

I stopped putting Democratic bumper stickers on my car when I lived in rural MD after the third time a truck tried to run me off the road late at night. Oddly it hasn't happened since.

Likewise I don't display any provocative messaging in public and only opine anonymously. Conservatives are simply too stupid and violent to take a chance with. It only takes one bozo.

Can't say that is the case here, though we are pretty close to Madison and may not quite qualify as rural conservative. Liberals here are pretty outspoken, and I've never felt the least bit uncomfortable identifying myself as one. Maybe Wisconsin's old progressive tradition serves as a memory of some kind, even amidst the idiocy of the last 10-20 years.

Places certainly vary. I have found that roughly speaking straight white men can get away with saying almost anything in each other's company without much beyond the cowards' usual blowtardness. It's women who get harrassed, gays who get beaten, and blacks who get shot.

Yes. But see the Alphas know that this is only dangerous when done by the socialists. When the fascists do it it's ok. (Yes, I am completely ignoring the meaning of the word socialist, and completely using the word fascist in the proper context).
