Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Shootout in a beanpot game?...., not even going to say what I think about that.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I wonder when it was instituted. Beanpot is not a Hockey East tournament, so it doesn't have anything to do with the league adopting it.

Ryabkina is having a heck of a game for Harvard. Four out of the team's 5 goals. It was close up until about 10 mins into the 3rd when Harvard broke it open.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

And for another year, the women's beanpot results are the reverse of the men's, haha.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Count me in with the people not happy about this shootout business. I'd like to hear more about this as well - rule change? only semis? What an unsatisfying way to end that first game.

Blech - I really hope that isn't in place for the final.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I'm quoting Skate79 from the Harvard thread (hope you don't mind ;) )

Had a chance to sit with Joe Bertagna during the Northeastern-BU tilt (that was a barnburner) and found out something interesting. The Beanpot will have shootouts in the semis from now on because of the triple OT game that Harvard and BC played in '07. This puts Harvard at a distinct disadvantage because we don't use the shootout in the ECAC. The first game was decided by a shootout with Northeastern potting two goals to win it. I wonder if the ECAC will adopt this strategy next season. I'm assuming that shootouts won't be permitted in the NCAA tournament.

I heard about it back in January, and as skate said, the decision was made to prevent the 3OT games of Beanpot's past.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I heard about it back in January, and as skate said, the decision was made to prevent the 3OT games of Beanpot's past.

Translation: We don't want to spend the time, money, or effort to allow a WOMEN'S game to be played to it's proper conclusion.

If I were a betting man, this same rule will not be applied equally to the men's tournament.

The other implicit, and even less palatable conclusion of this change to shootouts, is that female players must be saved from the physical exertion required of potential multiple overtimes.

As an impartial observer of that 3 OT game, I can say without a doubt that it was more exciting than a shootout could ever be. And I had to leave after the first OT. I can only imagine the tension and excitement had I been able to stay for the 2nd and 3rd OTs.

Although I have no connections to any of the players involved in the 3 OT game, I'd bet that for those involved, it was one of the most memorable games in their ENTIRE playing careers...even over Frozen Four appearances. I highly doubt ANY of them, even on the Harvard squad, would have wanted to see that game decided by an individual skills competition.

But here we are with a tournament game being decided by a skills competition. BU must be crushed, after having battled back from a big deficit, to see that team effort completely dismissed in favor of a circus act. And can NU really view this "win" in the same way as if they had bucked up and won legitimately in OT?

I hate shootouts with a passion. It's bad enough when it's used to award arbitrary points in the standings in conference play, but here it is being used to award a "victory" towards a tournament championship. It is just wrong on so many levels.

Boo, Bertagna, Boo.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I don't necessarily agree with the shootout, but I think NU will view their SO "win" tonight as "holy____ we can't keep blowing big 3rd period leads anymore" and be happy they came away advancing to the next round. They seemed pretty excited about it. http://www.gocrimson.com/sports/wice/2009-10/files/100202_NU_Winning_Goal.flv

I'm hoping it provides the motivation needed to beat a tough tough Harvard team. Huskies have to be firing on all cylinders.

While I'm sure it was a memorable game for all, I doubt it was the most memorable game of the season for any of them, because both teams wound up in a multi-OT game during the NCAAs that year. BC played 2 such NCAA games, winning one, losing one. Nothing can quite match the drama of sudden death + "win or your season ends".

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

You nailed my reaction to the shootout, Freak - in much more articulate terms than my "blech." I had the same feeling- "I bet they are not doing this in the men's tournament - what, do they think the women aren't up to ot play?"

I was there for the whole BC-Harvard 3 OT game. Even though my rooting interest came out on the losing end, it was thrilling. Watching both teams' players get out there shift after shift, knowing that exhaustion was going to have to factor into the winning goal, was very exciting. It was particularly interesting to think about Schaus and Kessler out there for so long, and their stamina.

I also agree that this is a totally unfair way for BU to lose that game. They deserved to be given the chance to actually play HOCKEY, and not have the outcome determined by some silly skills exhibition.

BOO BOO BOO Beanpot organizers!

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

CHF,

While you may have a couple of points to your complaint let's not forget that all the teams are playing by these rules and they all have an equal chance to contribute. It's not the players choice or fault. They just gotta play the way the organizers rules are set up!

Kessler didnt play that game. It was Brittany Martin.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Here's the list of Beanpot games whose ending would have been ruined had a shootout rule been in place:

1999 Beanpot semifinal:
Harvard 7, Northeastern 6 (OT)
9:53 Jennifer Botterill (Tammy Shewchuk, A.J. Mleczko)

2001 Beanpot final:
Harvard 4, Northeastern 3 (OT)
6:35 Jennifer Botterill (unassisted)

2002 Beanpot semifinal:
Harvard 4, Northeastern 3 (OT)
9:59 Lauren McAuliffe (Nicole Corriero, Ashley Banfield)

2006 Beanpot semifinal
BC 4, Northeastern 3 (OT)
11:12 Meghan Fardelmann (Deborah Spillane, Cristin Stuart)

2007 Beanpot semifinal
BC 4, Harvard 3 (3 OT)
54:13 Anna McDonald (9) (Kelli Stack, Michelle Lombardi)

I take it back.....chippy and NU LOVE this rule change. :p

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Here's the list of Beanpot games whose ending would have been ruined had a shootout rule been in place:

In other words, when talking about this huge menace of OT games, we're talking about FIVE (6 counting yesterday) games in the entire history of the tournament.

Only FOUR (5) would have been subject to the rule in place this year.

And only ONE game went more than 1 OT.

The inescapable conclusion is that the women's game does not merit the time, effort, or money to allow games to be played to their proper conclusion. And as I said before, I'd bet that the men are NOT being held to the same rule.

It feels just like the Frozen Fenway game; do the bare minimum to include the women's game, while virtually all the promotions, merchandise, etc was poured into the men's game.
