Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

"Harvard, NU and BU are missing some big guns (Kessler, JMarty/Schelling, Kohanchuck) and BC has been underachieving all year. Could make for the most competitive Beanpot we've seen in awhile."

True...and let's not forget that BC has two players off at the Olympics.

One approach is for us all to play "my misfortune is more misfortunate that yours" and have elaborate player-to-player comparisons ("I'll match one Kessler with one Schaus and raise you one Stack").

Well FWIW, the other 3 teams had those players playing for them this season and their current records reflect the talent that was present. Whereas BC knew they weren't going to have Stack and Schaus this season so I'd argue that your comparison is slightly off target. Almost like saying "o man, if only that blue chip recruit came in this year and not next."

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I really wish one of the BC boys would just do the right thing and vote wit their heart. BC has noone behind them:(
Well, I'm not a BC boy, but hey, the Eagles have some Minnesota kids ...

If we win the Beanpot, I'll be pumped like you wouldn't believe.
Let's go BC! Win one for the Tiger!

Then the question should have been "who do you want to win the Beanpot?":p
Northeastern.:)

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

You knew exactly what I meant. It's not a college hockey hotbed and yet Northeastern has picked up two of their Olympic players. Clearly the first question, the mock exaggeration, showed I knew the obvious answer (recruiting) and that it was a way on commenting on the fact that Northeastern does a good job recruiting there.

And back in 1999, you might have asked, how did Harvard manage to get four Olympic-caliber players? (i.e. eventual Olympians) You have to start somewhere.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I'm a little sentimental and old fashioned, which means I often enjoy rooting for the underdog. Of course, this tends to breed more disappointment than euphoria, but when the underdog comes through the thrill of victory reaches a whole new echelon.

Let's go, Ea-Gles! Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap

I don't think anyone thought the eagles were going to win the beanpot the first time they did! It was so much fun! Against Harvard, on Harvard's turf. And as the coach said "it was for every player who ever played for Boston College!"

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

I still sorta consider my Huskies as underdogs based simply on the fact that we haven't flat out won a Beanpot game in, what is it, 5 years? We got something to prove and I hope we prove it :)

Had they picked up 4 Olympic players from Denmark or somewhere, then yes, I'd have asked the same question. The point wasn't that Northeastern is getting Olympians necessarily, but that they are picking up Swiss nationals. How many other Swiss players are currently in the NCAA? Does Northeastern have the only two collegiate members of the Swiss national team? I don't know. But I am impressed by the fact that Northeastern is looking at Switzerland and getting players to leave there and come to Northeastern.

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Julia Marty's twin Stefanie plays for Syracuse. They both started out at New Hampshire and transfered last year. Schelling was recruited under the Schuler regime and chose NU for the business program over UND and a "Minnesota school", not sure which one. Perhaps when the Martys transfered, Schelling committing to NU influenced Julia's decision, but I wouldnt' say NU is maintaining a presence in Switzerland.

Also, I believe one of the freshmen at Maine is on the Swiss Olympic team as well.

Maybe this will lead to more Swiss players in the NCAA, but while it's improved it's still not really a hockey hotbed.

I don't know the total count of Swiss US college players, but Schelling is hardly the first swiss goalie to star in the US. Patricia Sautter-Elsnore (2001-3, 2005) and Riitta Schaublin (2003-2007) both started national championship games for UMD, and Sautter won two titles.

It's really not all that hard to find who the best European players are. You just go to the World Championships, watch, and there they are as teenagers. And everyone knows US college hockey is a great deal, and certainly UMD's European stars showed it could be done earlier this decade. I don't think it's too a hard sell to get them to come here.

Eagles, smeagles, you just want Padstack to buy wings and beer next time he is in town! :p

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Remember, both the first and second games are available tonight on GoCrimson.com for purchase to view, and they'll be free audio of the 8pm game on WHRB.org. During the 8pm game, we'll have an intermission show featuring some Harvard alums (just a warning that due to the equipment we have, the intermission shows can't be heard on GoCrimson.com because they originate in the studio and not from the rink.)

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Wow, only 2 of 42 votes for the Eagles. Although I voted for the poll's favorite, I'm rooting for the underdog!

Re: Beanpot 2010- Who's Got It?

Huskies really want it this year. 3-0 in the first period, controlling the play.

I fully expect BU to come charging back hard in the 2nd period. NU better be ready!
