Re: BC Women's Hockey, 2015-2016: Embrace The Cupcake Diet
That started off as a slog and turned into a stroll.
The first period was disjointed and uneven from BC's side. Passes didn't connect, timing was off. Burt was on her game and kept the first-period shutout, Keller was sitting on Coyne like a comfortable throw cushion, and we got two relatively soft ones to come out ahead, but it wasn't a dominant performance like last week's Hockey East final.
The second and third were much more like BC hockey. Anastos was off all game, she seemed a step slower than usual and wasn't picking up passes, and when possible NU were putting the Coyne line out against our Anastos / Trivigno / Newkirk line, so that line had trouble getting on the scoreboard (though not in the penalty box -- hat tip to Trivigno who is now only 7 penalty minutes short of the BC college record). But the first and third lines (Kent / Carp / Skarupa and Capizzano / Sullivan / Grieves respectively) were clicking really nicely all the way through the second half of the game and it was no surprise to see the third line get a couple of nice goals. Coach Crowley called out the third line in particular as bringing an energy to the whole team, and that was particularly true tonight.
I would have liked the shutout, but it was a privilege to see Kendall Coyne's last collegiate game and a kind of pleasure to see her final, valedictory goal, scored in the Coyniest of ways with a rush all the way up the boards, a deke around two players in our defensive zone and a shot perfectly placed top corner. In all the talk about Desbiens' record setting season, and with no disrespect intended to her, I feel there hasn't been enough said about how Coyne's 50 goals are the second-most in NCAA D1 history, more even than Kessel scored in Minnesota's perfect season.
Looking forward to next weekend, should we be worried that of the four non-ENG goals:
* One was a trickle through the five-hole of the type that Bulgalski has sadly given up all season but that Tiley, Leveille and Desbiens don't
* Two (both of Sullivan's) were juicy rebounds of the type that you might get from Leveille but you won't get from Desbiens
* ... and so only one goal of five (Skarupa's) wasn't on the goalie in some way?
The negative spin is that the Eagles really should be able to get more quality goals than that, and that they've been flattered a lot by the poor goaltending on a lot of Hockey East teams. (O'Neil was as good in the WHEA final as she's been against BC but she is not yet a top-tier goalie; Bugalski is not elite yet; Chuli, who is elite, trickled one through the five-hole in the WHEA semifinal that was even worse than the one Bugalski let in today). The positive spin is that if you put 39 shots on goal, and they're quality shots, then you'll get a couple of decent rebounds from anyone.
I honestly don't know, and I think the Eagles' greatest risk against Clarkson and Wisconsin is frustration.

Just a reminder that much though it's easy to rag on these players, they're real people who feel real emotions.
