BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

One thing is for sure... Megan Keller is the best incoming freshman defense-woman in the nation.
Let's not get too excited here. This is, I assume, the same Megan Keller who played second line D in the U18 CANADA-USA 5-1 blowout loss in the gold medal game in Budapest? She was -1 with 2 out of the 4 team USA penalties. On the other hand, Jincy Dunne was -3, but then again she was playing against Canada's first line. Gotta' play big in the big games.

In the U-22 series after two games, the cumulative score is 8-1 in favor of the US. Keller hasn't showed up on the score sheet yet. Maybe she's the best incoming stay at home freshman Dman in the country. I agree she is an excellent player, but please explain your opinion as to why she is the 'best'.

Sheagle, seems like people really don't like Keller for some reason. Anytime anyone says anything good about her people jump at the chance to say how much she sucks!

She must be good if everyone hates her so much. Sweet.

Major one-timer by Haley Skarupa! Nice feed as well from Hannah Brandt. Bunch of nice passes by Brandt in the two games.

Haley Skarupa should transfer to Minnesota and play on a line next year with Hannah Brandt and Dani Cameranesi.
That's a good idea:D

The games have clearly shown that Keller is far from a "stay at home" label. I agree with those who say that she is very, very good. She seems to be the total package of size, mobility, skill with the puck, and hockey sense. It's hard to say definitely that she's the best incoming D without watching all the rookies to be, but she's done nothing on her own to discourage the praise.

No one said she sucks. Almost everyone admits she is "one of the best". The argument is with posters who say she is clearly the best freshman defenseman in the country (yeah!!!). If that is your opinion, no one can argue it, but when people try to support it with limited observations (eg. I haven't seen the Canadians; or I watched at Nationals - when 1 elite D played forward the whole tournament and 2 elite D were playing with well known injuries) and data (+/- for 1 tournament with no 95s and a bunch of blowouts) that opinion looks biased or ill founded.

As for yesterday's game, Keller looked very, very good.

And before anyone says the clear best D next year is .... go watch the U18 videos. I don't think it is as clear as one might think.

This sums it up very well. Keller may well be one of the best freshmen, if not the best. We will see how things play out.

From the national team thread:

Another thing that Maroon and Gold can agree upon... Brandt and Skarupa should have been on the Olympic roster.
Skarupa was an interesting study last year. She started out like a bat out of hell and then cooled off considerably. She was hacked at constantly and I have a feeling that it took quite a physical toll. It sure looked like it. I know wwhyte feels the same way.

Also she was the prime offensive weapon and she was clearly targeted as such. As good as she was I really think she is going to have a breakout year this year not being the focal point of opposing D.

I think Skarupa will still be the focal point. Even two years ago, she was the player for the Eagles that an opponent would see as the most dangerous. Given you have as much offensive talent as you do, opponents can't afford to focus on her exclusively. Carpenter may be more important to the team overall due to her leadership qualities and other talents, but in terms of pure offensive potential, I think Skarupa is the the more dangerous weapon. She's probably been banged up for parts of both of her first two BC seasons, and that is likely why her production drops at times.

Hm... I totally disagree. No disrespect to Skarupa but I think Carpenter is the better player (especially after the last year, she looks like she's only improved in her time away from BC). Now that Carpenter is the Olympian opposing players are going to key in on her in an even bigger way, I think.

I mean, either way, it's a good problem to have. "Which elite offensive weapon is more elite?" Heh.

USA sweeps the U22 series with a 3-2 shootout win today.

USA dominated the game and if not for Canada's goalie, Anne Renee Desbiens (Wisconsin) the game would have been a blowout. Canada actually led the game 2-0 with less than 3 minutes to go but they took a penalty, the US pulled their goalie and scored on the 6-4 with less than 2 min to go (Skrupa an assist). Then the US pulled their goalie again and they scored again (Alex Carpenter with the goal) )with less than a min to go to tie it up 2-2. Canada took another penalty and it carried over into the 5 min OT (which was played 4-4). For the ensuing 4-3 pk for 1:13, the Canadian coach had an all Clarkson lineup :) of MacAulay, Fast and Ambrose out and they killed all but 7 sec of the PP before they left the ice. Ambrose made a number of key blocks. Carpenter scores 2 goals in the shootout (including the game winner). USA outshot Canada 29-14 and I would say 15 of those 29 shots were grade A chances that Desbiens stopped and 4 or 5 of those were Sportscenter Top 10 worthy :) .

Skrupa, Carpenter and Keller are gonna be a handfull for any team this coming season. If BC can get some goaltending watch out ;) .

BC has such an embarrassment of riches that they don't even need a goaltender.

Who dat say they gonna beat dem Eagles?

God I am just so freaking excited for hockey. There's been *nothing* of interest in the sports world for months. Usually the Red Sox are my bridge to hockey through the summer but this year.... well, they're a bridge to nowhere basically.

Megan Keller: the best D-man in the entire world or just one of the best? The bafflingly intense debate continues.

Well there's something else we have in common: Red Sox and Twins are both cellar dwellers! :(
