BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

I have seen her play multiple times over the last few years and was very impressed. However last season was not impressive for BBN and in the 3 games I saw this past season it was not good. It may be more of indication of what is in front of her. I am not that close to the situation but I would be concerned she is not ready to move up at this time.

I like this info. Sounds like her school wasn't much of a powerhouse?

What about Switaj? 4 year starter at Culver is pretty solid, 4 years at national team camp... Anyone know anything on her?

Here is what I said on 6/4: "Very Good goalie who plays the puck well. Basically kept her outgunned Culver teams in games. Her biggest question at D1 will be her small size."

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Didn't Miller come in a year early? Why, when she only played in 16 games over 2 seasons? Was she an Olympic hopeful? What does this say about Gabri Switaj, having Burt come in a year early? I would love to be a fly on Katie's wall, seems she is a great salesperson.

Wasn't Burt's highest level of competition 16U? I understand she played a couple games at the international level, but it would seem this isn't enough to warrant a starting spot for a great D1 program as an underager. Saw her at National Camp this year too and wasn't very impressed with some of the weak goals that were let in. I will say, her team was definitely the worst, but I guess when you hear so much good press on a kid, you'd think she'd perform at an elite level on the biggest stage. But then again, she is a 17 year old kid. This is interesting to say the least.

I think it says more about how shallow our bench was. Our only returning goalie was not 100% certain going to be ready for the season (from what I understand she's going to be good to go, though), and we had one incoming freshman.

She is one hell of a recruiter, isn't she? I haven't had any complaints at all about her in-game style either the last several years. As someone who's followed the program for a while now (8 seasons, bloody hell, where did the time go?), if it were up to me I'd give her a lengthy extension.

She is or was the goalie at BBN (Buckingham, Browne, & Nichols) which is a D1 New England Prep School. They had an unremarkable season vs the other D1 teams this year, did not make the playoffs. However, she was named at the D1 all-star goalie which was interesting given the results.

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

BC released its roster for this year. Its safe to say that BC will be an NCAA contender this year, with or without Burt. The defense is stacked with veterans like Pfalzer and Bender and the frosh seem to be very talented. Keller,Miano and Flanagan will have huge roles as only freshman. Whoever the goalie is they will have a very strong defense in front of them.

The NEPSAC All Star teams are all about coach connections, coach salesmanship, and school interest in promoting their kids. I wouldn't put too much faith in them. At the D1 level, a third of the team every average year should probably come from Nobles if the right kids are on the team (this past year might have been an exception though).

In any case, the BBN team should have doen better this season - they squeaked into the D1 playoffs last season laregly on Katie's shoulders and those of a few good forwards. Those kids were all back as I recall and the team did worse. Whether it was a goaltending issue or not I don't know.

Whether she is good enough to move to D1 after a few years of prep school, Nat Camp, U-18 USA, and U-16 club hockey only time will tell. But it rarely is a positive to go early to college for athletes - in fact, that is why there are so many prep school kids who take an extra year in girls hockey and 20 year old freshmen in boys hockey. The additional age and maturity almost always makes a kid a better player (and a better student). As I wrote earlier, I hate this move ... it certainly is NOT in the player's best long term interest.

Burt is going to be great! She is a big and very well positioned. She will be a star right off the bat for these Boston college eagles.

I do not think Court or Kinger would of pulled her up If they did not think she was ready.

Might take a few months to acclimate to the college game but Burt is going to be a star. There are virtually no flaws in her game and I would expect her to be as good as any collegiate goaltender who has ever played the position. No worries for BC and good luck to the departed Ms. Miller.

Who cares how fundamentally sound a goalie is if they don't stop shots? I'll be curious how this works out for BC.

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

One thing is for sure... Megan Keller is the best incoming freshman defense-woman in the nation.

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

"Court and Kinger" will do what is best for their program at the expense of an individual player in every case, just like any coach. They lost (arguably) their goaltending starter for next season and are uncomfortable with having only 1 incoming freshman and 1 recovering junior (?) as their only goalies, so they talked their committed future recruit into skipping her senior year and coming a year early in order to ensure they have 3 goalies on the roster. That's it plain and simple, If she isn't ready, she'll sit on the bench and not play and they'll bring someone else in in a year or two to replace her if she doesn't improve (which is likely if she sits on the bench instead of playing at BB&N/Wizards...... it's about winning now, not some individual kid's long term benefit.

wow do you have it all wrong...

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

You left out a key part of my statement - "just like any coach". A coaches job by definition is to make the team perform the best that it can. They make decisions all the time that place the team over an individual, just as they should. This is not a negative commentary on the coaches for doing their job - it is a recognition that their job doesn't always align with the best interests of an individual player, which is what Sheagle008 was suggesting.

Since you're Katie's parent (per earlier posts) I'm 110% sure you have more info than I do and since you posted this it would appear you really want to share, so go ahead. In any case, time will tell if matriculating early was the right move or not.
