BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

A masterful recap. Believe it or not: thank you, from one who was there, enduring it all.

I especially like the narrative tease: "At this point Harvard thinks Maschmeyer is the problem and not BC's world-class speed and skill. Let's see how it works out for them."

I will spare Harvardians a link to this, though they might appreciate the enlightenment. :)

Well how else are we going to have a challenge??
Given your reluctance to leave New England, it will be tough. With good reason -- when you do venture out, it doesn't seem to go as well.

A load of great links:

Podcast interview with Alex Carpenter, which remarkably doesn't touch on her being Bobby Carpenter's daughter until near the end: http://media.weei.com/a/99779090/co...donato-and-bc-women-s-star-alex-carpenter.htm

And of course this week's Wednesday Women is basically an extended recap of the Harvard game :-) http://www.uscho.com/2014/12/03/wednesday-women-by-any-means-necessary/

Winning without five skaters was no problem; now you get to try it for a week without your goalie.

This runs Jan 3-6, and the first BC/BU game is the 7th; we lose Capizzano, they lose Bach, Doyle, and Lefort. Wonder if they'll make it back like happened after Four Nations? Seems like it'll be a close run thing; the gold medal game ends 3 pm Eastern time on the 6th in Fussen, two hours out of Munich, and the BC/BU game is 7 pm on the 7th.

(Harvard lose Edney for a game against Yale).

Also, ISTR reading something about a US national development camp the first week in January, but I can't find any details online. Does anyone have any info about that?

I can not understand why they insist on doing so much international hockey during the NCAA season. Like it or not NCAA Womens D1 is the best womens hockey league. For some players they will leave their school team 3 or 4 times this season. Growing the game internationally is important and there is no greater honor for a player than getting to wear the national jersey but what is so terrible about doing all this in April or May.

YES! It really feels disrespectful.

Honestly, just a hunch, but I suspect the Canadians will be back in Boston in time for Wednesday night. I'm basing this on nothing but a Google Flights search, though.

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Other than the players and parents, does anyone really care about these international hockey events? Once a year would be acceptable but do agree that having your top players absent multiple times a year does not show a lot of respect for the women's game and the investment some of the schools have in these players. The risk of injury also has to be considered. Not fun and definitely a concern.

I mean, I care, just not about Canada. lol

That used to be one of the big problems with the holiday camps. The national teams don't care because they don't have any competitions that matter happening any time soon, so they'd work the players like dogs. Then they come back to their college teams all beat up, and it takes them a couple weeks to get playing well again, when in theory they should be coming back from a restorative break. I don't know if it has improved recently, but I remember that being an issue a half dozen years ago.

YES! It really feels disrespectful.

So, hockey IS a winter sport - is it really unreasonable that USA Hockey and/or Hockey Canada asks its national team players (many of whom aren't still in college) to skate as a team a couple of times a winter?

What I am saying is to me it feels disrespectful. I became a fan through the Minnesota Gophers. To me, the Gophers are a serious team. I don't recall ever being a fan of a team and having your best players removed from games during the season to go play with somebody else. I’m still getting used to this.

Sure, the olympics are the pinnacle of women's hockey. But I agree with Royale With Cheese that NCAA D1 is the best league in women's hockey and I think this tarnishes it. I've heard Mark Johnson say more than once when you are in women's hockey that this is the way it is. So there you go, grin and bear it. But maybe it still bugs Mark Johnson, too.

Basketball is usually played in the winter, but the international events are held in the summer. You don't see USA Hockey and Hockey Canada picking players off the NHL teams a few times a year so they can have a nice, patriotic practice. Practice for what? An event that is at least three months away.
