BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Great article from Arlan today: http://www.uscho.com/2014/11/20/pfa...on-college-is-fast-becoming-the-team-to-beat/

Good to see the D (and Katie Burt!) getting some love, loved the shout-out to Dru Burns and the fact that Arlan was willing to go beyond the obvious in writing the column. If I had one criticism I would say it was maybe a bit arrogant.

Arrogant? Like was said they practice everyday against the best players in the country.

Who dat say dey gonna beat them Eagles?

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Watched the home and away series vs UCONN. Other than the Huskies striking first yesterday it was all BC. Today, BC looked bored. Gotta find a way to not get sloppy.
That said, wow are they talented!

I thought both games were carbon copies of each other with the only difference being BC didn't allow an early goal in the first period.

BC looked REALLY sloppy in the first period of both games. Almost too nonchalant. They didn't put much power into their stride and as a result didn't get themselves set up offensively that much in the first of either game.

The second and third periods of both games were much, much better. Part of it is that BC is so deep (everyone on the top 3 lines, PLUS two defensemen, has at least 11 points which is just insane) that it totally wears out the teams they play. They've totally overwhelmed everyone in the third period in every game since the trip to southern Canada.

Which kind of begs the question: outside of BC, just how weak is Hockey East this year, given St. Lawrence could hang with them for the whole game, but all the HEA teams just turtle?

BC went to Southern Canada???? When was that? I would have made the drive to watch
TTT thinks anytime you leave Boston, you're in a foreign country.

Hockey East is freaking AWFUL and it is killing me. BU might be decent (or Harvard might be crap) but I have no idea at this point.

And southern Canada = SLU, I was making a funny

Harvard looks similar to Cornell in that they are tinkering with their lineups and will be much better later, but likely not sooner. When I saw BU, I thought they were good offensively but had a lot of work to do defensively. Then they play a 1-1 game with Harvard, so now I don't know what to think about the Terriers. Durocher usually gets the maximum out of them come tournament time, so wait until the Hockey East Tournament before making too many judgements.

I wonder what is wrong with Carpenter's entry in collegehockeystats.net -- it shows her with 30 career points? Anyway, she had 39 as a rookie, 70 last year, and 30 thus far, so she has 139 at BC. I'd say it is a foregone conclusion that she (and Skarupa) eclipse 70 points and set a new season scoring record. A more interesting question is will she set a new career mark by the end of the year? That will be tougher, because Stack had 209. I'm assuming that is the top; I didn't bother looking for the record book. Another 70 points by the end of the year is possible, but I think it is slightly above her current pace. Thoughts?

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

I noticed that to, my thought was maybe it had something to do with her being out last year and somehow accidentally being added as a new player? But from what I can tell she's the only Olympian having this issue.

Carpenter is at 2.5 ppg so wouldn't that our her on pace for something like 100?

BC Women's hockey equalled their best win streak ever with the win over Harvard tonight and were honored for that and for their #1 ranking at the intermission of the men's game:

I haven't been following women's college hockey long enough to know how they stack up against great teams of the past, but tonight's performance was simply amazing. They just kept coming, one 85-foot tape-to-tape pass after another through the neutral zone. More important, as Grant was noting off-board, the streak of not allowing more than 2 goals per game continues. The second line, Field/Anastos/Capizzano, is continuing to mysteriously underproduce -- they had zero points between them this game -- but that's not for lack of possession time, they gave Harvard just as much trouble as the other lines without quite managing to put the puck in the net. Coach Crowley gave the fourth line, Doherty/McLean/Grieves, some ice time even in the first period. I don't think that was going easy on Harvard, I think that was taking advantage of having such a strong fourth line to keep the top three lines even fresher. Grieves's play has taken a step forward since her great performance at Providence during the Four Nations, and I think coach's trust in that line has taken a step forward too. The result is a team that's even more dangerous than it was a month ago. Who knows how well they can do?

Arlan was saying that he thinks Coach Crowley should be hoping for a serious game at some point over the next few months. I was expecting it here, and we got it for a period and change. I wish we were playing Minnesota, Wisconsin or Clarkson over the next few months to get a sense of how BC really stacks up against those teams. (We are playing Quinni and BU, if Harvard are national quality we'll get to play them again in the Beanpot final, and the other contenders -- Mercyhurst, UMD, maybe Bemidji -- aren't on the same plane). I would love to see them have to come from two goals behind once, just to do it. Without that, it's hard to tell just how good they really are. But boy do they look good.

I have seen the Knights play over the internet and 3 games in person (2 Syracuse and Princeton). They do play a good defensive system and have some good dmen and Tiley in goal is good but they do not have the fire power or speed up front to match BC. After their first line of MacAulay (who leads the team with 14 goals), Bannon and Mercer the rest of the forwards are shall we say scoring challenged. They only have 3 full lines on the roster and in the Princeton game were using dman Renata Fast (he fastest skater on the team by far) on a forward line to see if they could generate more scoring. Not sure if she played forward tonight in the UConn game. 40 of their 51 goals scored to date have come from the first line (30) and the defensemen (10). I am just hoping that Quinny does not shut them out again on Sat night.
