Barbershop: The Next Cut

I had my doubts when this first came out, but heard good things, and finally watched it. The "main" plot about the shop is a total rehash, but that's the name on the cereal box, so to speak. It's what's inside that counts, and what's inside this movie is the real story. The humor, social commentary, etc are outstanding. I was constantly switching back and forth between laughing and then getting a little worked up either agreeing or disagreeing with the convos. Very good movie, definitely recommend.

Finally saw The Worlds End (the last "Cornetto Trilogy" movie).

Nowhere near as good as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz.

I was not as big on any of them as some of you, but I liked all three. If I had to rank them, I'd put it Shaun, Worlds, Hot.

Shaun of the Dead is brilliant...Hot Fuzz bored me to tears.

I only saw clips from Fuzz on the talk circuit, but I agree about Shaun -- it made me laugh very, very hard. :)

World's End is funny but it's also charming, particularly for those of us who are old enough to have had that experience of going back and yet not going back. It captured it beautifully.

Pegg will be Ogden in Ready Player One, which is a good sign (if you have not read this do so, immediately).

I think we haven't seen his best work, yet. He seems to be one of those excellent comic actors who also has a lot more depth (Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, Bill Murray).

Pegg has a few roles where he delivers the British deadpan lines, and he hits those in perfect stride. To me, it's a harder sort of comedy to do than giving the quick, sarcastic lines for which he's better known and also does well. The deadpan role I saw him give was in Man Up, a rom-com of sorts, but he also had to give a straight dramatic performance for a number of scenes, and he did all right with those.

The Nice Guys

Terribly disjointed plot, but the movie is saved by the banter between Crowe and Gosling. Hilariously dead-pan humor. Worth a watch just for that.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Not quite the Wedding Crashers ripoff I thought it might be and worthy of a rainy afternoon.

Netflix- Look Who's Back. Adolph wakes up in 2014 Berlin.

He's in for a bit of a culture shock.

In other movies that I finally got to see: Whiplash. Holy smokes what a fantastic movie. J.K. Simmons was incredible.

...Hot Fuzz bored me to tears.

I loved it. Usually with those noir-ish movies, the story is secondary to pretty much everything else going on. (See also: The Big Lebowski)

Gosling and Crowe were both HILARIOUS in this. We need more movies with action and leads that scream like idiots.

I remember seeing trailers for this at an art house about 2 years ago. It's been out a while, right?

Thank you for reminding me; I really want to see it.

Seconded. Did he win the Oscar? He darn well should have.

Edit: Yes, he did.

So, a movie about jazz drumming...it was intense?

Me: You're Goddam right it was friggin' intense.

Odd thing to say about that subject matter, but it's the truth.

Anyone else watch the new documentary on Amanda Knox on Netflix? I'd give it mixed reviews at best.

If the case interested you at all, you do get a bit of the flavor of where the murder happened, with a fair amount of photos and press video. You also get extensive interviews with the major players, including Knox, her boyfriend and the primary prosecutor/investigator. But if you're looking for someone to ask the hard questions, you won't get it here.

It doesn't appear that it was a great investigation by the police, there doesn't really seem to be any physical evidence tying Knox to the crime, and the prosecution's theory seems largely unsubstantiated and bizarre, but I really thought the filmmaker could have done a better job following up on a couple of things.

First, Knox gives an account of that morning that makes no sense. She was a young woman, in a foreign country, and after spending a night with a guy she met just a week before, she returns to her home to discover the front door busted open. Without checking around the apartment, she walks inside and takes off her clothes to take a shower. She sees blood in the bathroom, but that doesn't raise any alarm bells.

She takes the shower. When getting out, for the first time she notices blood on the bathmat (a photograph shows the bathmat with a huge bloody footprint on it). She dries her hair and gets dressed. Then she looks around the apartment and sees her roommates door closed. She tries it and it's locked.

She then calls this new boyfriend, who comes over and tries to get in the door. They eventually call the cops.

I don't know. I'm not sure there are too many young women who upon returning home in a foreign country to see their front door busted open would react in the same way.

They also interviewed a "journalist" from Great Britain who was the primary gossip driver on the case. At the end, when he basically blamed the prosecutors for all the misinformation he sent out, he said something to the effect that it wasn't his fault. They gave him faulty information. It's not like he could go out and verify it. If he did, he probably wouldn't get the scoop.

Probably the highlight for me was the interview with the attorney for Rudy Guide, the guy who is still in prison for the actual murder. He expressed unhappiness with the American press second guessing his legal strategy. He said that in 1308 one of the first lectures on legal theories was presented in the same courthouse where he tried his case. In America, in 1308, they were painting pictures of buffalo on caves. :D

The Wave (Bølgen).

Norwegian disaster movie set in the real life town of Geiranger. This tourist town sits at water level in a fjord. The mountains that surround it are geologically unstable. It is inevitable that someday a sufficiently large slide will create a tsunami which will destroy the town with 10 minutes warning.

Wonderful atmosphere as only Scandies can do. Uneven characterization; some nice effects. Solid B, I'm not sure why it wasn't more. If the characters had been as developed (and well-acted) as those in Force Majeure, a Swedish film with some superficial similarities that concentrates much more on the characters and relationships, it would have been special.

Where did you see this movie? Is it in theaters or did you watch on Netflix or somewhere else?

Thirty years ago this past May I actually had lunch in Geiranger, before taking the ferry boat ride down the fjord. Pictures don't do it justice.
