Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Clown,

Let me guess...you get mad about Han not shooting first dont you :p Thrawn is a cool character but those books dont count anymore so not sure what they can really do with him in the future. Too bad, those books were awesome. Bringing in Mara Jade is much easier...

Look I am not denigrating the shows, they are fun. But to most people seeing the movie (not just Mark Ellis  ) is the only thing that matters. The deeper canon stuff is for the uber fans. Its like when fans of JRR Tolkien's books defended having 3 Hobbit films cause it added in stuff from other stories to fill in. That is great for the people who read those books and stories but the average movie goer doesnt give two craps.
Nope, Han doesn't hork me off in the least. Sure, I'll joke around with it, but it's just another thing that Lucas did because he lacks self control. I just enjoy the stuff, good mindless time killers while I'm on the bus.

I don't know why you would think bringing Thrawn back would be more difficult than Mara Jade. Thrawn was, at his core, simply another officer in the Imperial navy. They're bringing him back, and this will essentially reset the character as the old stories were wiped from canon. They intend to keep the core of the character, but the timeline of his being has changed from post-RotJ to pre-New Hope. And given what Star Wars did with The Force Awakens and Rebels, Mara Jade would be an impossible character to bring back into the role she had throughout the old books.

Oh, the promise we have all lost...

The American Dream Labs are changing the face of faith-based films. Alongside Ben McPherson, head of the American Dream Labs, Glenn unveiled two projects they are working on: ‘The Immortal’ and ‘The Revolutionary’. While there were few details revealed about the latter, Glenn did go into detail about ‘The Immortal’. It’s a gritty action-adventure film that marries a rugged version of Santa Claus with the eternal story of Jesus Christ. It is unlike any movie faith film ever conceived, combining the greatest story Glenn has ever conceived with mind-blowing production value.

Friday, the entire studio went bankrupt, so we will never see what could have truly been the greatest story ever told.

Because in reality Mara Jade is just a smuggler love interest for Luke. (she was more at first but she became lame) Her character was cool but could fit in lots of places. Grand Admiral Thrawn was awesome because of the Zahn books and because no one even knew he was a Grand Admiral. (they thought all were accounted for) Now it is a completely new character that is Thrawn in name only. It is just a way to get the uber fans to geek out a bit.

Anyways...enough on this topic...for now ;)

ITT...One of the more obvious and lucrative scams :)

I could've made the argument for 2, well-made films. Instead, we got 3 mediocre-to-bad ones.

St Vincent:

Bill Murray plays a jack bag Vietnam Vet, and when a divorced mom and her young son moves in next door, an unlikely friendship blossoms. Murray is obviously excellent; his barbs are quite hilarious in a dark comedy sort of way. Melissa McCarthy as the mom does awesome in her serious role (I was duly impressed; was rather afraid of what I'd get from her), and Naomi Watts is hilarious as the prostitute that keeps company with Murray.

Yes, total cliche storyline, but it was very well done; you got involved with all the characters, which is tough in a paint-by-numbers movie such as this one. Definitely recommend.

The Bank.

I've been trying to see as many movies as I can where math is a significant part of the plot or characterization. This one's OK, though the math was more alluded to than gone into. Math genius is hired by Evil Corp. to find algorithm that can predict the stock market based ion chaos theory. Meanwhile, another subplot is leading towards violence...

B for movie, B- for math. It could have used less people and more formulae.

Current list of math movies, sorted by quality of movie, then interestingness of math content:

Pi, A+ for movie, A for math
A Beautiful Mind, A, B+
Fermat's Room, A-, B-
Proof, A-, C
The Bank, B, B-
Cube, B-, B+

Other suggestions welcome.

You gave Cube a B average? WHat's wrong with you? Those are amazingly awful rainy Sunday movies.

I was VERY disappointed with the second half of Cube. I loved the set up but they just didn't know what to do with it.

City 40

Doc on one of Russia's closed cities, due to plutonium manufacturing. Yes, the US has had those, too. Los Alamos NM and Richland WA were two of them.

Very interesting doc, I think the slant is for the human rights angle, rather than anti-USSR, although that angle is obviously part of the overall presentation. It's amazing what some of the people think, and more amazing on what some of the people can get for goods and such, compared to the rest of Russia.

Think about this: Over time, the sum of radionuclide contamination [in this city] is estimated to 2-3 times the release from the explosions from the Chernobyl accident.

The Mir Mine is like that, too. Arsenic and lead poisoning in the groundwater, metallic sidings and various effluent. Well, and also living next door to a half mile deep hole that's a mile across and is gradually growing via mudslides until it eventually eats your home.
