Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Michael Moore can eat a Richard. You wanna talk about slanted "documentaries..."

Don't treat them as factual and they can be funny. Roger & Me is actually genuine, which isn't surprising since it was made before he cashed in and became famous as the liberal Goebbels. Sicko wasn't half bad for humor. Fahrenheit 9/11? Yeah that was a pantload of Bush-bashing conspiracy theory garbage.

I won't pay to see his films in the theater though. I wait for them to hit the bargain rentals section.

While I haven't seen it, I have heard "Roger And Me" is decent. I'll give the benefit of the doubt there.

Bowling for Columbine was great. F-9/11 was the only lefty equivalent I've ever seen of the average O'Reilly or Hannity show. Never seen anything else by him.

Bowling was great. Roger was eye-opening. Haven't seen the rest.

The Wave (Bølgen).

Norwegian disaster movie set in the real life town of Geiranger. This tourist town sits at water level in a fjord. The mountains that surround it are geologically unstable. It is inevitable that someday a sufficiently large slide will create a tsunami which will destroy the town with 10 minutes warning.

Wonderful atmosphere as only Scandies can do. Uneven characterization; some nice effects. Solid B, I'm not sure why it wasn't more. If the characters had been as developed (and well-acted) as those in Force Majeure, a Swedish film with some superficial similarities that concentrates much more on the characters and relationships, it would have been special.

Saw this one too- really enjoyed it. Dialogue isn't extensive for those allergic to subtitles

Might have to check this out. Subtitles are pretty much a must with me, given the times I watch movies, and their countries of origin...

This line from Bowling kinda struck a chord: " In fact, this Windsor policeman told me that the only gun murder he could recall in Windsor in the last three years was committed by a guy from Detroit, who had a stolen gun from Minnesota."

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

I hope this one works out better for Moore than the last one.

The last time Michael Moore made a film with the intent of swaying an election (2004), the candidate he opposed got re-elected and his film spawned the Citizens United case. Thanks Roger.

Citizens United might actually save our democracy when it is overturned. We need the Courts to recognize that limitless private and corporate contributions to campaigns are fundamentally anti-democratic. They give the rich a weighted vote and disenfranchise the poor.

One man one vote , if taken seriously, means public financing of elections. This is the only way we'll ever throw the bribers out of the temple.

I'm not as convinced as you that Citizens United will be overturned, no matter how much stacking of the Court HRC gets to do.

First, the decision is technically and legally sound. What good is having freedom of speech if associations of individuals are denied that same freedom. Red flags should have been raised as soon as someone realized they were going to have to pass an exception to the electioneering law that exempted media corporations from this prohibition. If the New York Times Company can engage in political speech, why not General Electric?

Second, all of the arguments against the rationale of Citizens United are just that we're going to spend too much money on elections, which will lead to corruption. We already spend too much money on elections. Will there be any evidence that elections have been corrupted as a result of corporate PAC's? Doubtful.

Third, I actually do have some faith in the Supreme Court, no matter which political persuasion happens to control. I don't believe they want to be seen as a group that when one party gets in power they decide one way, then the next year when that changes they just go back and reverse themselves. That's what the National Labor Relations Board does, and they are looked upon as a group of political clowns.

Citizens United might get chipped away at, or even ultimately overturned, but I don't think we'll see it in our lifetime. Wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong, though. :)

What part of "people have the right peaceably to assemble to petition the government" is so objectionable to you?

You do realize that labor unions are organized as corporations, and so you are asking the Court to make it illegal for labor unions to contribute to political campaigns?

One man one vote , if taken seriously
says the loudest voice against enacting laws that provide for exactly that??? and why do you exclude women from the right to vote?

public financing of elections. This is the only way we'll ever throw the bribers out of the temple.
nice naïve idealism. NY has public financing of elections and people are scamming the system, setting up minor parties to win enough of the vote to get public financing so that they can then staff these parties with friends and relatives whose salaries are now paid by the state. Public financing might sound nice, but it will turn into another corporate welfare program; and the costs of running elections will not be reduced at all, and this spending will turn into another budget-buster. Incumbents would become even more entrenched, as they would be the ones crafting the fine print behind the actual implementation. Do you seriously believe they will not write the laws to their own advantage?

The one sure way to reduce the influence of money in politics is to make politics unimportant. Every election now is cast in apocalyptic tones; our very survival is at stake! Why is that, eh? how might we reverse that?
