Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Star Wars Celebration kicked off today and those in attendance got to see the Rogue One trailer. People were hopeful that the trailer would be shown tonight on an ABC Star Wars special, but they played the 3-minute behind-the-scenes "sizzle" trailer that was shown three times during the live stream. A trailer will reportedly be attached to Pete's Dragon in four weeks but it isn't clear if it will be the same trailer shown today or a different trailer. Kathleen Kennedy told the people at SWCE that only they were going to see this trailer. Did she mean the only people NOW or the only people EVER? Regardless the hype for Rogue One among SW fans is off the charts. Saving Private Ryan in space.

Ghosbusters.

4 out of 5

Loved the cameos (last cameo was the best). Loved the girls. Loved the story/plot. Loved Kate McKinnon's character soooooooooooooooooo much. Thought the writing could have been a little better. Overall loved the film.

Great popcorn flick. Best one I've seen all summer actually. Civil War certainly was great but it was too dark and serious for just a summer popcorn flick. This was the prototypical summer popcorn movie and it delivered.

IMAX 3D was fantastic. TIP: Stay through all the credits.

Next Week: Star Trek.

Colin Covert said McKinnon was great, and this was a good movie. Now I'm really worried, since I disagree with him often. ;)

Didn't realize Star Trek was here already. Might check that out.

DID find out that I actually have the day off when Suicide Squad hits. Hello morning showing at the local theater!

Spoiler-free Ghostbusters review:

Right from the beginning this movie tries way too hard. Many of the jokes weren't necessary. I get that we have Melissa McCarthy and three SNL alumna but let them be funny organically, don't force it down our throats.

The origin story is familiar but changed enough to keep it fresh. The chemistry between McCarthy and McKinnon is palpable. Later the chemistry changes as the relationship between McCarthy and Wiig grows but McKinnon remains the star of the cast.

This will be a point of contention and I can understand why. There are times when she goes over the top with her performance, but then you realize that *everyone* is trying too hard and McKinnon actually stands out by pushing it that much further. However, I can see where she might rub people the wrong way.

There was one thing that really bothered me throughout and it was only after the movie ended that I realized what it was. McKinnon speaks in jargon. A lot. Like, really a lot. At first I thought it was because she lacked the gravitas to deliver those lines, but that wasn't it. What was missing was a Peter Venkman character to tell her to speak English already. Wiig and McCarthy finish her sentences with more technobabble and Jones just acts like she understands. No one tells them to dumb it down.

I didn't enjoy the beginning very much, found a happy place for about 20 minutes in the second act and then the finale was a great big turd. I didn't buy the villain, didn't buy his plan and didn't buy the resolution. The scenes during the closing credits were actually pretty good (until the dance number) and the final scene works until you realize it's a setup for a sequel that no one is going to want.

This had potential. I like McKinnon and Wiig very much. I am biased because I know the backstory of what happened and how Ivan Reitman was frozen out. I know there was another script that could have been so much better and still could have starred this cast. I was so disappointed because this could have been so much better. The final insult was seeing the tag line "For Harold Ramis" at the end of the credits. Don't insult the man.

In all I give this film a 4/10. It wasn't nearly as bad as people feared, but it was nowhere near quality entertainment.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Well right now Variety is predicting (based on the box office estimations) that Ghostbusters will finish second to The Secret Life of Pets and make about $46.5 million. A pretty solid opening but if it wants any chance of making a profit in the US (it had a $144 million budget which is really high for a comedy) it needs serious legs. Even a 50% drop will make it unlikely. They are going to spend some serious coin to beef up the second week BO I would assume...unless it does big numbers overseas I dont see a sequel coming either.

I think I will see it next weekend.

Opinions of it are so diverse I would say go ahead and see it. You might enjoy it like Scooby did.

What is so disappointing is this summer has been a bust. Yes, Finding Dory as been a hit but it wasn't at the top of my list of movies I wanted to see. ID:R was just dreadful. I was expecting it to be "bad" but enjoyable. It was worse than bad, it was boring. It wasn't enjoyable in the least. BFG was Spielberg, Disney and a popular children's book. Magic waiting to happen! Not even close. My expectations for this were as low as they have been for any film but the positive reviews gave me a glimmer of hope. It wasn't a steaming pile of crap, but it didn't live up to even mediocre expectations. If Star Trek, Lights Out and Suicide Squad don't deliver this could be a terrible summer for movies.

I'm putting all my hopes on "Sausage Party".

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

I am expecting that it wont be as bad as many thought but not as good as the reviews. I will probably laugh and like the cameos but the movie will probably be rather forgettable. I havent read any reviews yet (good or bad) and zero spoilers so I am going in clean :)

I did though read what some of the cast and Paul Fieg said about the people ripping the trailers and I wont lie, they are morons for ripping fans, especially fans of the original movie. People on the web say stuff but they hardly ever follow through unless you challenge them.

Munich:

Uneven pace, and the end is a convoluted mess. Very disappointing, given my expectations. Did not hold my attention at all, and it really should have.

Finally saw The Hustler...man that movie was awesome! :)

I have to admit, I also saw that movie well after I should have watched that movie. And I agree. Great movie.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Star Wars Celebration Europe wrapped up today and a lot of fans are disappointed because of the supposed lack of new information that came out. You only saw a 60-second Rogue One teaser if you were in attendance, there was no news on Episode VIII (for some reason fans thought they'd get a title) and no announcement of an Obi Wan movie (or trilogy) covering his days in exile on Tatooine. The biggest news of the weekend was the 3:33 trailer for Star Wars Rebels and the announcement that Grand Admiral Thrawn would be the villain this season, as well as a new novel coming next summer written by Timothy Zahn. This means the insanely popular Thrawn will go from Legends to part of Star Wars Canon.

I am not disappointed. I was able to watch the things I wanted on the livestream, I'm not crushed that there was no trailer for Rogue One and I could not care less what the name of a movie 18 months away will be called. I am a little disappointed there was no Obi Wan news, but they are waiting to see how Rogue One does. Plus the release calendar is full until 2019 anyway. It just makes it more likely we'll get an announcement at Celebration next April. I bought my tickets today. Going to be quite a 2-week stretch....the Frozen Four in Chicago then Celebration in Orlando a week later.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

An Obi Wan trilogy? Not that I should be surprised and perhaps I'm missing something but it seems a bit excessive.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

I'm a little more than geeked out about Thrawn making his way into more Star Wars stuff. I hope they have him with at least one scene in his captain's room, surrounded by artwork.

It would be possible to give him a trilogy out of the 19 years he spent on the planet, watching the bait, I mean Luke, as he was "hidden" away from Vader and the Emperor.

Ewan MacGregor is eager to play the part again and he was the one character to come out of the prequels as a fan favorite. There is some rich history to be explored but I don't know that they would need a trilogy to tell it. But hey, Peter Jackson could turn a single book into three very long movies, so you never know. I'd want this way before a Boba Fett movie, or even a Yoda origin story.

There is maybe, but Disney is wasting zero time oversaturating the market. Sooner or later even the uber fans are going to tire of this stuff.

This is starting to stink of George Lucas...not every story needs to be told. Mystery is good too. The more you fill in the gaps the more you then create unneeded plot holes later on. (we have discussed the prequel created plot holes at length)

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

The more you fill in the gaps the more you then create unneeded plot holes later on.

Also, the more you specify a character the more you reduce him/her. This should be called the "Don Draper Problem."

Questions are open-ended and interesting. Answers are limited and boring.
