The MPAA ratings (and all other age-rating systems) exist solely for lazy parents who won't properly parent their little dipsh*ts.

It's silly, though, that the state can prevent a parent from taking their child in to a movie. I understand the rating being "in loco parentis," but the actual parent should trump what society wants.

This is probably the last remaining libertarian trope from my dumb 20s that I still believe. :)

The state doesn't, the movie industry does. It's not criminal to take a kid to an nc-17 movie, the theaters just won't allow it.

First amendment and all that. Government can only regulate obscenity, nothing more.

Well, the reason the industry set up the MPAA was to forestall being regulated by the government. This all comes back to the blue noses writing their Congressman, and Congressmen not being trustworthy with our rights.

However what flew in the 40s might not today, so it would be interesting to see what would happen if the MPAA just adjourned. No doubt the crazies would give censorship a try (the GOP platform mentions porn as a national health threat -- not guns  ), but the judiciary may be grown up enough now to shut them down.

The judiciary shut them down about 5 years ago in the violent video games case out of California. Definitively so, in fact.

I was watching a video about Saving Private Ryan, and in the scene where the two soldiers are trying to surrender to the Americans and get shot (the "look, I washed for supper" bit), apparently they are yelling in Czech that they are Czech and not German, and haven't killed anyone (as they would have been forcibly conscripted by the Germans). Interesting twist.

Correct. You probably saw the YouTube video about the movie and its historical accuracy (or a discussion of said review). It was a lovely addition by Spielberg especially without subtitles. And there really were conscripts from the conquered nation in that region.

Given the proliferation of comic book-based movies out there today, this is a strong tie-in. The comic book industry itself used to have a review board to which all publishers submitted their work before releasing to the public. The publisher would then add a little seal to the cover art of their books declaring them to have been reviewed for standards. Then Marvel was getting ready to release a Spider-Man issue that they knew would be rejected by the review board, so they simply didn't submit it for review. Their sales were in no way affected, and when word got out about the content they even went up a little. And that began the end of the comic book review board.

IIRC, they had a character say "sh**" in response to some big, dramatic event that upset him. It was really a quite tame thing by today's standards, but it was seen as a huge coup back then.

The Spidey issue was about drug abuse, it wasnt swearing.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Violence is ok as long as there isnt too much blood. Blood is a huge no no for the MPAA these days.

The black-and-white parts in Kill Bill 1 And 2 were due to blood ratings for the MPAA. Yeah. Oh, it's B&W, so it's okay!

Really? I thought it was QT doing his stylize/homage thing for exploitation films. I thought it was an artistic decision, not a commercial one.

From IMDB:

The black and white photography in the Crazy 88 fight scene is ultimately known as a homage to '70s and '80s US television airings of kung fu movies. Black and white (as well as black and red), were used to conceal the shedding of blood from television censors. Originally, no black and white photographic effects were going to be used (and in the Japanese version none are), but the MPAA demanded measures be taken to tone the scene down. Tarantino merely used the old trick for its intended purpose, rather than merely as an homage.

That's fascinating. Very good info; thank you.

Pretty sure QT has been very open about that...he takes no credit for the choice. I always liked that about him...I may not much like his movies but he is one of the best interviews in the business.

After watching a movie, I imdb it, to catch anything I may have missed, or to learn something new. Some of the stuff I've learned over the years (like the previously mentioned) is indeed fascinating.

I like that QT tries to do interesting things. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn't, but he takes risks -- something virtually nobody in Hollywood does now.

IMO, Pulp Fiction and KB1 really stand up.

KB3 is IINM due out next year. No idea what he's going to do (personnel-wise he has some, uh, problems...) but I trust that he will try to do something strange and provocative.

I do maintain that he is second (only to Scorcese) for soundtracks. Dude has a great knack for that.

Agreed he is one I respect the hell out of whether I like the product or not. To me that is super high praise!

I am a fan of QT, but I totally see where he'd turn people off. And compliments from the likes of you guys?! JFC! That is respect! ;)

The Irish Pub:

Doc on traditional, old school Irish pubs. Exemplifies the reason I want to head there. It's not about the drink, it is about knowing the locals. And frankly, with the taproom boom here, I think the US is getting back to those roots, and I love it.

It always seems a bit bizarre to me that when Kill Bill 2 is shown on television, they have no trouble at all with Kiddo snatching out Elle's eyeball, but then they cut the scene where she drops it on the floor and squishes it with her toes.
