Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.

I'm embarrassed to say it took me this long to finally see it. I'm not embarrassed to say it is wildly overrated. The characters fail to connect with us one iota. The ladies (Crawford and Davis), who famously hated one another in real life, are caked over by ludicrous makeup, ham dialog, music cues so inane they could be from a J. J. Abrams movie, and utter lack of motion or interest. Victor Buono (i.e., King Tut from the Batman TV show) steals the movie with a fantastic performance equal parts creepy and hilarious.

This movie is just terrible. Except for the gimmicky rivalry of the actresses, which sours after 10 minutes, and an admittedly wonderfully wicked first scene with the girls as child actors, there is no there there. Blech. D.

I heard of it, but it takes a lot to make me watch something made before I was born/of movie-watching age.

Just came from the BFG (sure, the F stands for Friendly *wink wink*) the latest from Spielberg and Disney. The first half is a magical and wondrous trip to a world of imagination and to our childhoods. It is clever, not too scary and visionary. Delightful and charming as that boy who took a ride across the moon on a bicycle. Then Sophie finds the picture of Queen Victoria, gets an idea and the movie goes all to hell. After the first half I was ready to give this film a 9/10 and wonder why it has disappointed so at the box office. The second half gets a generous 4/10 so overall is a 6.5/10, which considering who was behind the camera is depressing. Mark Rylance is very good in the title role but Ruby Barnhill steals the movie. She has a bright future ahead of her.

So, it's the Big Fcuking (cash)Grab?

So, it's the Big Fcuking (cash)Grab?

I wouldn't go that far. To be fair, I am not the target audience. A single guy in his 40s wasting a summer afternoon in an air conditioned movie theater is not who Disney is hoping to draw. Kids will love the film. People with lower, more realistic expectations will enjoy the film. My expectations were just sky high considering it was Disney, Spielberg and a beloved Roald Dahl novel. All the ingredients were in place for something special, and it didn't deliver all the way through. A 6.5 would still be "fresh" on rotten tomatoes so I wouldn't call it a cash grab. Which is good, because the opening weekend box office was underwhelming.

A friend (not the same guy from the Netherlands) saw the film and had the exact opposite reaction I did. He thought the beginning was too whimsical and not grounded in reality whereas the second half made much more sense. For this movie, I would say each person should see it and judge for themselves. When I got my ticket, the couple behind me wanted two for ID:R. I was so tempted to turn around and warn them to see anything else in the theater. Even watching the guy make popcorn and serve soft drinks would be a better use of time. I definitely would not recommend that film to anyone. For this film, I would.

wtf movie is this?

[edit] Weird that a movie like this would have zero marketing here and if it will be a flop it goes against what I'm seeing from RT, IDMb and MC - for what they're worth.

Given who's behind it, I've been hearing it has fallen well short. I am also confused at the lack of marketing. I hadn't heard about it until I saw the review in the paper.

Good Night And Good Luck
Very dry, but very good. All-star cast, Jebus. Love how they put in actual footage with the movie. Definitely recommend.

I watched Black Mass on my flight the other day...pretty good though I thought Cumberbatch was miscast. (yes I know everyone loves him...never quite got it) Depp was pretty sweet though and if he wasnt actively trying to destroy his career he may have won an Oscar.

I was really disappointed in this movie. It could have been so much more. So much more.

Fastball:

A documentary combining anecdotes and science about the fastball in baseball. Absolutely amazing and some of the stats shown are just sick. Sick. Covers all eras of baseball, a lot of commentary from past and current players. Even if you have the most marginal interest in the sport, I think you'll fully enjoy this one.

After watching Knuckleball a year or two ago, I should probably watch this one, eh?

My absolute hatred of K Costner aside (he narrates), yes. This is light years better than Knuckleball. I gave it the rare 5-star on Netflix.

Woah. OK, I'm adding it to the queue. And I liked Knuckleball quite a bit, despite it's focus on a couple of players, rather than the mechanics of the pitch itself.
