Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

There are still some movies that are doing good work. It's a small subset but they're out there.

There are always some, sure. I'm talking trends. There are short periods when the quality and marketing biorhythms line up and longer periods when they don't.

I assume ability is evenly distributed over all time (because, as I may have mentioned once or twice, I believe nothing ever changes). What varies is that talent is both given opportunity (or not) according to the business environment and challenged to do better work (or not) by the intellectual environment. Those environments are constantly changing, like the rise and fall of continents. There are short times when the base land is already above sea level and talent is given an opportunity, and you get a whole herd of really good films. But statistically the smart marketing move is ordinarily to appeal to the lowest common denominator, both by investing in dumber but more accessible writers and directors, or by smart directors and writers pitching their material low brow to pick up the bigger check.

Now -- during those periods, a few fluke undersea volcanoes still erupt and manage to produce mountains. In fact I think the corollary is that the greatest movies of all time should be evenly distributed, and I think history bears this out. Genius will out.

But for the "first rate second rate" talents, they are subject to the vicissitudes of their period. Preston Sturges made movies that are very entertaining, well crafted, and clever. Steve Spielberg made movies that are very entertaining, well crafted, and inane. The difference may merely be that Sturges happened to be lucky enough to be standing on dry land, competing with others who were pushing him to aim as high as they could. Or he may have simply been working before the Great Disenchantment, when it became popular to say all claims to relative superiority are parochial or elitist.

Point is, if you're a genius you can make a masterpiece whether you live in Italy under the Borgias or cuckoo clock Switzerland. But if you're anybody else, you take what comes.

Things We Lost In The Fire:

A recent widow invites her husband's troubled best friend to live with her and her two children. As he gradually turns his life around, he helps the family cope and confront their loss.

Not as sappy as it sounds. Benicio Del Toro/Halle Berry are in it, hence my interest. Del Toro was awesome, as usual, and Berry did very well in her role. It is a slower movie, it allllllmosts drags at times, but still a good watch.

Beyond the Edge

Docu-drama that uses archival footage/photos/interviews, and reenactments with modern actors/period costuming, to tell the story of Hillary & Norgay's first summit of Everest.

I actually didn't know that they were the B-team, after the first British pair (Bourdillon & Evans) turned around at the South Summit due to equipment failure.

Saw The Shallows today. It was better than I expected. Certainly not Jaws but it didn't try to be. Blake Lively doesn't have Wilson but she does have Steven Seagull. I rate it an enjoyable 7/10.

I did have some comic relief before the movie started when a grandma, her daughter and grandson came in and sat down. Um...are you guys looking for Finding Dory? It's in the next theater...

Crouching Tiger: Sword Of Destiny

Had serious doubts about this, given the time since the original. I was more than pleasantly surprised. VERY well done. Had to get used to the way of Asian storytelling, I haven't seen an Asian movie in quite a while, but after the first 15 minutes or so, I was back in the swing of things.

If you liked the first one, you'll really like the second one. FTR, during that run of movies in this similar vein (Hero, Curse Of The Golden Flower, House Of Flying Daggers [my fave of all those by far]) I thought the original Crouching was the "worst." I'd put the sequel ahead of Curse, behind Hero/House.

Holy crap. Independence Day: Resurgence truly is dumb. I mean DUMB. I laughed quite a bit, though. Not because the jokes were funny.

What made it dumb is that you couldn't tell if they were being so bad on purpose.

The Great Alone:

Dam, if that isn't one helluva story. I'd like to shake Lance's hand just for overcoming all the obstacles put in front of him (of which some he created himself, and has admitted). Story of an Iditerod musher, who won the race 4 times straight, and dad was a former winner.

Not just beating the competitors, but beating nature. Amazing. Highly recommend. Got one of the few 5-star ratings I give out.

The Lego Movie

This is now in my top 5 favorite movies. Easily quotable, too.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

Short Night of Glass Dolls (La corta notte delle bambole di vetro). Aldo Lado giallo with less blood and more sleuthing than usual. Dead journalist on morgue slab tries to remember how he got there. Barbara Bach (Bond girl from The Spy Who Loved Me and Mrs. Ringo Starr) has a brief part which is evidently just an excuse to show her full frontal.

Nice combination of classic Italian slasher elements (strange secondary characters, oddball and out of place humor, long Marxist political discursions, utterly gratuitous nudity, terrible dialog one suspects is even worse in the original language) all coming together just right. All it's missing is a washed-up American actor picking up some quick bread (this time it's a washed-up French actor, Jean Sorel) and an important non-human character (the genre has included birds, dogs, cats, monkeys, rodents, insects, and Donald Pleasance).

Also: I didn't see the end coming until about 2/3rds of the way through.

Solid B if you like the genre; B+ if you love it.

On July 1, Olivia de Havilland turns 100.

As you can imagine, she is the sole surviving cast member of Gone With the Wind (1939) (and probably The Adventures of Robin Hood, too).

Ironic since Melanie was such a frail frail.

And Zsa Zsa still lives on.

(BTW, the Adventures Of Robin Hood is a great movie; Errol was awesome)

1:15 am ET tonight on TCM. Captain Blood on at 5 am.

I don't get TCM (or most cable). I get channels like Grit and MeTV, totally random channels in SD.

However, I do have Netflix. I'll have to check if they have it (I have both streaming/disc option). It's been a few years since I've seen that movie.

Is Captain Blood the "someday you'll call me 'Jamey Boy' one?"

Errol Flynn is the personification of cool. Elvis and James Dean and Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis are but pale imitations.

Ip Man 3:
As far as cliched movies go, even if biographical (somewhat), this isn't horrible. The slightly-more-than-a-cameo is unintentionally hilarious (I won't spoil it; there is a big fight scene involving the actor). The other fight scenes are standard kung fu fights, nothing spectacular. I'd say this is an afternoon-killer at best, and at worst, if you've seen the first two Ip Mans, might as well finish off the trilogy.

Talvar (Guilty):

Indian (dot, not feather) movie about a murder case. Daughter and servant are murdered, parents are prime suspects. As the movie goes forward, different angles/theories are presented. Outstanding movie, IMO, lots of twists and turns and such. Presented much like Rashomon (beyond awesome movie, btw).

On a lighter note, one of the main investigators is TOTALLY the Indian Jeff Goldblum. It's uncanny with the basic look, mannerisms, style, etc. Got a chuckle out of that.

J Edgar:

Disjointed for the majority of the movie. No flow whatsoever. The homosexual angle was shoved into your face, no subtlety. Same with the mommy issues. Leo was awesome in the role, but the overall movie needed to soften the plot points, IMO. If it weren't for Leo, I'd have given it 2 stars; as it was, I gave it 3.

Saw Finding Dory today. Solid Pixar film. Tugs at the heartstrings as much as you'd expect. One of the questions was whether Dory could carry an entire movie as the main character. It is Ellen voicing an adorable fish in a Pixar film. Of course she can. Sure it is silly and requires suspension of disbelief but most Pixar animations do. Another hallmark is they develop characters that you care about. Not the best Pixar has done but a very good film for all ages. There were kids and senior citizens and ages in between in my showing. I'll give it an 8/10.
