At least seven killed at Fort Hood

Re: At least seven killed at Fort Hood

JFC, French Rage. Fort Hood military base covers about 250 square miles. If Obama had wanted to, he could have easily found some location on the base (or off) to meet with the people affected that would have in no way interfered with anything. That is a fact - this option was available to him. You're so hell-bent on defending Obama that you want to deny that he had a choice; therefore, he couldn't have made the wrong one because there wasn't a choice to be made.

But JFC on you, too, Old Pio. Do you think the families really care whether the President extends his condolences on a Friday or a Tuesday? Do you think that 5 years from now, the families of the victims will be thinking, "well, it was a shame we lost our son, but the real tragedy of that time was that we had to wait 3 days to meet the President. If only he'd showed up on Friday, it would have just been so much easier to handle."? Do you really? You're so hell-bent on attacking Obama that you're completely losing sight of what matters in this situation.

Obama had the choice. He chose to come on Tuesday. Big freaking deal.

Word.

Re: At least seven killed at Fort Hood

In actual news, the Ft. Hood dude now allegedly has a more credible link to 9/11 than Saddam Hussein did.

It's Texas. Guns are sold in vending machines and given away at baby showers.

Re: At least seven killed at Fort Hood

fun guy to invite to a baby shower, seeing how he gunned down a pregnant woman. (yes, I know you are joking)

Re: At least seven killed at Fort Hood

Jesus Fluking Christ. Sorry - thought that one was in play. :)

You have to remember who you're dealing with here. I make the assumption about what any internet "F" stands for, just as I make the same assumption for any military acronym: SNAFU, BUFF, etc.

Thanks :)

Rest easy, folks.

PuffHo has gotten to the bottom of things. Apparently, Major Nidal was just stressed out, and this has nothing to do whatsoever with his religion at all, not even a little. And if you think it does, you're just a raaaaaaacist.

Well, other than being a worldwide conspiracy of the Jooooooooos.

How many Muslim soldiers are enlisted in the various branches of the U.S. armed forces? How many have gone on shooting rampages against fellow soldiers this month? year? decade?

I'm not saying we should ignore whatever role religion might have played in this, or that we should ignore warning signs. But it also seems clear to me that the most direct cause of this event was that the guy simply went off the deep end.

If that's true, then why wouldn't we want to know more about how/why that happens? Even if it does seem squishy and liberal-y.

As I understand it, DOD estimates there are around 10 thousand Muslims on active duty, although many fewer than that, 3-4 thousand, have self identified (there is no requirement to tell anyone what, if any, religious preference a G.I. has).

This is the second incident in which an active duty member of the Army has murdered other soldiers based on Islamism. The first was Sgt. Akbar, who fragged and then shot at his officers in Kuwat. Two dead, about a dozen wounded. He's under sentence of death.

"Dr." Hasan is a far different case, both qualitatively and quantitatively. He is an officer. A highly trained professional. And if the reports we're hearing are true, gave off more than just a few suspicious vibes. He was canned from his job at Walter Reed (we don't yet know why because the files are confidential) but there are reports from his colleagues that he was in the habit of arguing with patients about their/our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There seems to be a pretty significant trail of evidence that, over time, he had become radicalized. The events of Thursday remind me of suicide bombers who make videos before their attacks. He gave away his possessions, including the Koran, attended services at his Mosque and had a visit from a stranger the morning of the killings (how badly do you think the FBI wants to identify that dude?). His behavior that day and at the processing center bespeaks deliberation, not someone "going off the deep end." I suspect the investigation will turn up additional evidence of his planning.

So the balancing act going forward is to respect our Muslim G.I.'s while answering the question of why this jihadi nutcake was allowed to remain in uniform and how many other jihadi nutcakes are out there. Remember, while "Dr." Hasan was firing those hundred or so rounds off last Thursday, he had no idea if he was killing other Muslims. In point of fact, he didn't care.

It's now alleged his mother attended a mosque attended by two members of the 9/11 team and that he claimed Islam supercedes the U.S. Constitution. I imagine the warning signals do not end here, so why the eff was this guy still in uniform?

I suspect political correctness, inertia and incompetence all played a role here. This is going to get scarier before we're done.

He's an MD, and he went to the military's med school. They try to retain these guys like grim death. I'd be almost surprised if they didn't give him a "pass" for this BS ...
