Re: ASU Hockey
Ok, I'll bite. Why is it not good news?

Ya. I would think the fact that they're still open to a smaller on-campus arena would be a good thing. Or any on-campus arena. A few months ago they were talking about just making an agreement to play at Gila River or wherever the Suns play. Compared to that this story sounds like good news for ASU to me.
I think the bad news is the part about 18-24 month start date. Meaning no facility for potentially 4-5 years
UW-Eau Claire was a little tougher than "D2" Southern New Hampshire, eh?
Attendance at Gila for the ASU tournament wasn't too hot, and it also looked like there were still some seats available at Oceanside for last weekends series. This makes me think that the 5,000 seat multi-use, on campus arena would be the very best option (if they're able to make it happen.)
Having a 5000-8000 seat on/near campus arena is by far your best bet. Sharing an arena with the Coyotes isn't what you want, at least long term. You don't want to be playing in front of crowds of a few thousand in an NHL capacity arena. It just won't be a very good atmosphere.UW-Eau Claire was a little tougher than "D2" Southern New Hampshire, eh?

Nope RIT has been asking for the rules to be changed so we can be like RPI and Clarkson and allowed to offer scholarships since no other DIII schools can be a DI play up in single sport. DII is not financially smart for RIT right now any way. There are a lot of DIII programs close by we can play without having to spend money on hotels. That wouldn't be the case in DII which would mean more money on traveling for sports that don't draw like our hockey teams do now or did before we moved up.
A Power(s) Trip leads Chaos in the ASU Dressing Room
There is most definitely something weird going on in the Sun Devil Dressing room these days. I spoke with some very credible sources in the ASU Hockey World this past weekend who had some very interesting stories to share. Schmidt and Zucarrinni are no longer ASU Sun Devils which is old news by now but leads to all the new rumors. Masters is threatening to leave after he was asked to stay home from a recent road trip and is considering other College options at this time and has convinced a close teammate or 2 to consider using the same option. Other top players are not happy with Powers Chaotic approach and are weighing their options.
All three Captains were recently stripped of their C's and subsequently given to Newmeyer who was a healthy scratch on Saturday evening???

It is certainly a great idea to attempt to build a relationship by continuing to build the Desert Hockey Classic, but beyond that, I completely agree, you need the on-campus rink to draw your students and have an atmosphere...its highly unlikely you ever draw enough to make an NHL rink not seem empty...This.
Ya'll really don't want to model after OSU playing @Value City.
It always seemed odd to not find a coach with D1 experience.
Doesn't sound like a good situation. What happened to Zucarrinni? I was looking for him when ASU played Lowell. He had real good numbers in the BCHL and figured he must be hurt since he wasn't in the lineup.A Power(s) Trip leads Chaos in the ASU Dressing Room

Starting the program too quickly without enough homework, no conference affiliation, an under qualified head coach, no set plans for a suitable place to play...
At some point other D1 schools are going to look at a map and ASU is going to be screwed.
But hey, did the big $$ donor's son at least get to dress in a NCAA D1 game? Then it was all worth it...
The whole "recruiting to ASU is easy" thing is a pile of steaming Eaves. ASU will really never become a destination for top end recruits. Arizona is not hockey in any shape matter or form. You can talk about weather, girls, parties, etc. End of the day players want to play in places that are associated with hockey, it will always be a last resort. there will always be 54 other programs that a player will consider before ASU. It was a nice rich guy experiment. Baseball or Golf, that's another story![]()
My college teammate Charlie Kronschnabel and I were road roommates. Many a night after a 20 hour travel day to somewhere miserable (read: North Dakota, Michigan, or worse, Fairbanks, Alaska) we’d sit in our room and daydream about a normal college life. We’d joke about quitting WCHA hockey and going to play club hockey for Arizona State University.
We figured we’d easily be the best players in the league (so partying the night before games would be no problem), and it would be hotter than Marisa Miller so we could chuck around a frisbee in shorts and hit on girls. But nooo, college hockey is sooooooo cool, heaven forbid we make that choice… idiots.
