Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

i dont think it is weird at all; because i think that is the point. how does someone rise to having such political capital within their own party despite having accomplished so little? or to put it in college hockey terms, say 50% of the country thought the D-3 kid who murdered someone should win the hobey baker.. dont you think it would be reasonable for the other 50% to think they were on crack?

That's my point though, she's not liked by 50% of the country. Her best poll numbers give her 35% max against Obama. She has about as much chance of winning the presidency as you or I do.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

This is clearly due to overheated rhetoric as well.

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, state Sen. Leah Vukmir and state Sen. Alberta Darling were among the Republicans threatened this week along with Gov. Scott Walker.

In a statement issued Thursday, Johnson of Oshkosh said: "The FBI, Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, Oshkosh Police Department, and United States Capitol Police are working diligently to investigate this matter. I have complete confidence that they will do their jobs to the fullest extent."

You could run a doorknob on either party's ticket and it would still get 45%. Palin would actually be a fine test of this hypothesis, but no thank you, I will not take that chance.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Thats what the thinking was?, I'd say McCain was seen as someone way past his prime and as some one who was owed a chance after all these years. Palin was brought in as someone youthful and made for TV(at least until she talked)
Without Palin, McCain would have lost by more - he certainly wasn't doing anything to energize the base. She might be an idiot, but the right wing of the party liked her and was likely more motivated to turn out and vote with her on the ticket than they otherwise would have been.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

I had a chance to watch some clips of the president's memorial service speech. The man is right, it would be better if we were kinder and gentler to each other. So in the spirit of Hockey Friday, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to all the people I've been insulting, antagonistic, defiantly obtuse, and sarcastic to in this thread: 5mn_Major, Scooby, Kepler, and the rest of you fine people. Sorry for being a dick. *sniff* I love you guys.
I'm also sorry about the sarcasm that snuck in at the end there.

I'm also interested where this takes the meme that the media picks the Republican candidate. If they want Obama to win, surely they'll go for Palin right? But if they go for the most liberal, it has to be Romney I would think.

I still think Time Magazine did a lot for GW, with that glowing profile they printed before anyone had heard of him. I read it and said, this guy is going to be president. (This was back when Time mattered)

She's a rock star. She trancends rational thought. It's kind of like in the 70's when this band called KISS started getting huge. You either loved them or hated them, you weren't on the fence. Some people/places/things are like that.

Obviously we will never know, but I think it speaks more to the point that with any other right wing favorite as Veep, McCain would have lost by even less. She was a positive factor in that she was picked as a hood ornament for a part of the GOP base that McCain didn't appeal to. I suppose it's theoretically possible she also delivered some votes from women who voted for her plumbing, but I'd really like to think people are smarter than that.

Anyway, it's not an issue anymore, since there will be a wide open Republican nomination and if the right wing is really that muscular they should be able to pick their guy.

I saw Pawlenty on TDS last night. Although he was evasive at times, he's the only significant Republican figure I can recall from the last decade, other than Newt or Pat, who could at least follow the conversation. He isn't either a moron (Dubya, Jindal) or a True Believer (Huckabee, Paul), and he doesn't have that "Zales floor manager" vibe of Romney. He could be tough.

haven't been following this closely...i know this guy has issues, but was the attempt due to hating this woman or because he had an unhealthy obsession?

yes.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

On a serious note, I have a $20 bet going with a guy at work. He's a lefty who is absolutely certain she wins the GOP nomination. I say no way in hell. Upshot is that if she does I won't have to worry about paying the $20 as I'll already have offed myself.

He gave you straight up odds? Can I get some of that action?

I thought he did a terrible job.

Really, Jindal's a "moron"? I haven't followed his career but had the impression that his was a brainy reputation. A Republican Obama. way off?

I don't know if it's his rep, but I've rarely been less impressed by a politician's intelligence. Small sample size, though.

FWIW, a brief educational bio from Wiki:
Jindal attended Baton Rouge Magnet High School, graduating in 1988. He competed in tennis tournaments, started a computer newsletter, a retail candy business, and a mail-order software company. He spent his free time working at the concession stands during LSU football games.[6] Jindal was one of 50 students nationwide admitted to the elite PLME program at Brown University, guaranteeing him a place in medical school. He was interested in public policy. Jindal also completed a second major in biology. He graduated in 1991 at the age of 20, with honors in both majors.[6][7]
Jindal was named a member of the 1992 USA Today All-USA Academic Team. He was accepted by both Harvard Medical School and Yale Law School, but studied at New College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar. He received an M.Litt. degree in political science with an emphasis in health policy from the University of Oxford in 1994 for his thesis "A needs-based approach to health care".[6] He turned down an offer to study for a D.Phil. in politics,[8][9] but instead joined the consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

I'm the first to admit there can be a huge gulf between book smart and sensible, but "moron" might be going too far, considering all these sheepskins.

Hey, he may be a genius. Like I said, small sample size, primarily that ill-fated response to the Obama SOTU where he sounded like a fool.

I hope 100 people run for the GOP nomination, since most of the guys that ran last time were so weak, and there's at least a 1 in 3 chance we'll be stuck one of them as our next president. I mean Tom Tancredo? Seriously?
