Not good enough, but fair enough. People are fixated on Palin because she's a rock star. There's no other way to put it. Some people just "attract" other people to them. And her political viewpoints are so "radical" to the base left that they salivate every time she says something stupid.

Many in the base left WANT her to run for President and win the nomination. Why? Cause she is so polarizing she has .00001% chance of winning a general election. So, the left elevates her whenever they can because they think it helps them.

The right is no different. They elevate the people they find vile because it is to their benefit. At least this is what I see.

As to the rest of your argument, fair enough I suppose, for the base left at least. I'm talking more about the media at large. I mean, in recent 2012 polls, Obama beats her by something like 58-33, big numbers like that. So why does she get such attention?

On a serious note, I have a $20 bet going with a guy at work. He's a lefty who is absolutely certain she wins the GOP nomination. I say no way in hell. Upshot is that if she does I won't have to worry about paying the $20 as I'll already have offed myself.

I particularly like the connotation that they are buried deep in the ground, cut off from the rest of reality, and hardened against attack. That describes the closed-minded, paranoid environment of both Fox News and talk radio perfectly, and for a few other sources (Kos, MSNBC) it's a very good fit.

i dont think it is weird at all; because i think that is the point. how does someone rise to having such political capital within their own party despite having accomplished so little? or to put it in college hockey terms, say 50% of the country thought the D-3 kid who murdered someone should win the hobey baker.. dont you think it would be reasonable for the other 50% to think they were on crack?

mccain was seen as too moderate and the GOP wanted a VP candidate that appealed to the base. sure there were plenty of options out there, but the GOP thought they would get creative and jump on the opportunity to steal undecided women voters away from the democrats immediately after obama beat clinton in the primary. obviously the move backfired - probably because that campaign probably had no chance to begin with. Palin's star was never higher then right after her thrilling scripted RNC speech - ever since she has proved herself to be a hypocritical, bumbling fool each and every time she opens her mouth - to the point where her approval rating is in the tank, people within her own party are questioning her legitimacy, and (as astutely mentioned) the left is now running toward her instead of away from her because she is her own worst enemy at this point.

Thats what the thinking was?, I'd say McCain was seen as someone way past his prime and as some one who was owed a chance after all these years. Palin was brought in as someone youthful and made for TV(at least until she talked)
