Antiwork 2: No One Is Getting A Pay Raise

Work ever beat you up so bad that you drove the speed limit home? And in silence?

Years ago - I think it was my second year at this company, I had a boss that I didn't like very much (and many people there were amazed I lasted as long as I did working for him). I was driving home and sobbing in my car. I was at a red light a couple of blocks from the office. He was walking to the train right in front of my car. Part of me was thinking "Don't turn to look at me while I'm crying" and the other part of me was like "I could just put my foot on the gas..." So, to answer your question - yes.

Today is 20 years at my employer. I don’t know what to make of that, but the realization hit me a couple hours ago.

wow. that's impressive

I really wish I could find a job I genuinely enjoy and stay there for several years, feeling fulfilled and stable. Right now, though, I’m still in the process of searching and trying out different things to see what suits me best. Lately, I’ve been getting really into coding, using resources like corelangs https://www.corelangs.org/css/basics/css/ to learn the basics of CSS. I find it fascinating how much you can create and customize with coding, and the fact that this kind of job can be done online is a huge plus. It would give me the freedom to work remotely and travel the world, which is something I’ve always dreamed of. I’m hoping that by continuing to develop my coding skills, I’ll be able to land a remote job that allows me to combine my passion for travel with a career I truly enjoy. Let’s see if that dream becomes a reality

Let me know your thoughts on this. A senior leader is introducing a keynote speaker at a big women's conference we're sponsoring.
  • Our DEI Comms person wrote the senior leader's script as per my request. Before she sends to me, she shares with PR person, who OK'd it before it came to me.
  • Before sending back to the conference team, I forward to our Brand Strategy person to review, tell her DEI Comms person wrote it and looped in PR person.
  • She reviews, sends back to me but copies the PR person to get her thoughts on her minor edits.
  • I reply, thank Brand Strategy person, ask PR person her thoughts.
  • PR person email both of us back, tells me she reviewed and provided comments to DEI person a few days ago. And then says "It would be helpful if you could email us all on one chain moving forward to keep track of feedback/reviews/version control."
I'm not sure how or if to respond. I want to say I didn't include you on the email to the Brand Strategy person because you already reviewed it. Brand Strategy looped you back in so I asked you to OK her edits so you were on the email chain.

It's crap like this that drives me nuts.

2 years ago: I have had 6 months with a great job at a very small company. My company "merges" with a company 10x its size. 18 months later the company has become terrible and I am gone.

Last Friday: I have had 6 months with a great job at a very small company. I attend my first Q3 dinner. My company is "merging" with a company 10x its size.

My job paired me with a resident who loathes new staff; this resident will attack new staff. She pulls hair, scratches, bites, etc.

She got me pretty good last week, ripping lots of my hair out and scratching my face up.

My supervisors are concerned for my safety and we are talking about transferring to a different dept within the agency.

Just found out this will be the last year I can carry over 20 vacation days. They're dropping to 10 end of next year into 2026. Oh well, looks like I'll be either taking a 4-day work week for most of the year in 2025 or taking a couple of looooooooong vacations. I'm thinking this is step one to getting rid of FTO and telling people it's unlimited. Aren't people finding out the people wind up taking less vacation time when companies do that?

Yep. Unlimited PTO really means:
1) you'll be pressured, however formally or informally, into taking fewer days off and/or working remotely while "off". Studies consistently show people take less time off under "unlimited" plans than they do when they have a set, known amount.

2) Companies no longer have to pay out accrued leave when you leave because there's nothing to accrue.

This is the part that bothers me. I get a lot of vacation time and never use it. I've been with this company for so long I've maxed out on time. I've been carrying it over partially because there's a piece of me that my job will be eliminated in the next 12-18 months so I have (in my head) added this to my potential severance. Who knows what will happen now. I just know that I will be taking every last day in 2025.

If you think there's a possibility of your job being eliminated, holding on to that vacation as a potential addition to your severance makes sense. But also, don't forget that taking time off now could help you recharge and improve your perspective. Maybe it’s worth considering using some of that time sooner rather than later to take care of yourself, especially if the future feels uncertain. You might want to check out DailyPay reviews—it’s a service that lets you access earned wages before payday, which could be helpful if you ever find yourself in between jobs!

It only makes sense if she’s in a state that pays out pto. Most do not. I’d expect a bot to know better

My employer is all but ending remote work in the name of productivity.

I am now going to start counting my commute time as time spent working.
