Antiwork 2: No One Is Getting A Pay Raise

Today alone:

Been slapped 4 times.
Had a stuffed animal bounced off my head.
Been screamed at because they want thing it's not time for NOW.
Had a door opened on my arm.

And it's all: meh. I'm used to it by now.

What kind of job is that? I really hope it's well-paid. If not, consider reaching out to wonderlic customer service to explore better opportunities. Life's too short to spend hours in a job you don't enjoy. Besides, finding a fulfilling career can make a significant difference in your overall happiness and well-being. It's worth taking the time to explore your options and pursue something that truly resonates with you

I have to fire a senior manager for sexual harassment. Well technically HR will be delivering the message but I was the one that started the investigation process.

Turns out the bastard (married with 2 kids) had had 2 previous relationships with employees and now was in the middle of a 3rd.

I don't know if I'm more upset with myself for not figuring it out earlier or with him for being such a creepy dumbass.

I've been in that position and wondered the same about myself. I think women have creepy dumbass radar that works pretty well.

Update from the recruiting inquiry I got a few weeks back. Ended up going through the whole process, had the final round interview today, and impressed them. This company is a bigger shop and not a pure-play firm, so I don't expect the culture to be the same, but from what I've gathered it's decent. Now we see if I'm really their guy, or if another candidate is cheaper.

I'm not sure about your industry, but I have hired a bunch of people who were more expensive. I just went to my seniors and said "(the more expensive candidate) is the more cost-effective person. They'll fix or avoid problems we'd have to hire others to deal with."

If your leadership can't handle that logic, leave.

Working in a ground level, blue collar environment does have it's perks.

This past week we had the sh*t hit the fan and had three employees on our afternoon shift let go. The reason: Two for having cell phones on the floor and the 3rd for having ear buds in while on the floor. To make things even dumber, the ear bud person was discovered when they got called into the office for a different disciplinary write-up, and when removing their hat/baclava for the meeting (I'm in a refrigerated/freezer warehouse), their earbud fell out right in front of the supervisor.

It's made blatantly clear that possession of an electronic device on the floor is prohibited for safety reasons. It's a "Fireable on the spot" type offense, so the actions here are basically expected.

Where the comedy comes in is that we've actually gone a decent spell without one of these firings happening and people were getting more and more bold with this stuff. Especially during the 2nd half of the NFL season and March Madness, many of our "Dude-Bro Sports Gamblers" were constantly following scores while working. So they've clearly become emboldened with this.

And now those same people are all sorts of worked up over the firings and the idea that spot checks (basically you're called and asked to produce your phone from your locker/lunch bag or you get wanded by a metal detector to show its not on you). It's hilarious and I'm just laughing in their faces and enjoying every second of all the drama this has stirred up.

It's like the guy who always does 85-90mph on the expressway complaining about getting pulled over for speeding.

That seems needlessly excessive to be honest.

In my experience, I don’t trust any company to have effective emergency contact procedures so I’m always going to have my phone on my person.

I get that. But fork truck operators should not have one on them. That's what loudspeakers are for. We have very similar policies (though not as aggressively enforced).

technically we have a no camera policy too, but engineers carry their phones around everywhere. Just don't test the limits of that policy.

we have a pretty strict no headphones policy. I've never seen anyone stupid enough to test that either.

I definitely understand that policy in a warehouse environment. You need to remain aware of your surroundings for safety reasons. Phones and audio devices are obvious, easy distractions.

The reason for the blanket policy is that people already toe the line and are pretty bold about using earbuds and phones to pass the time over a workday as is.

I'm sure it just comes down to a liability thing with the corporate side. If they say that you can't have it out there, they get some legal wiggle room if someone does cause an accident where a phone is involved.

And I'm sorry, but the whole "I need my phone on me in case something happens at ______" is kind of BS. We have breaks every 2 hours where you have access to your phone. You're not fully detached and unreachable. 2 hours is a bit of time, but it is kind of obnoxious how society has shifted and that responses need to be instant.

I'm basing this off of a previous experience from when my wife was pregnant with my daughter: I do not trust any company to inform me in a timely manner of an emergency. Even more so in todays culture of "profit over everything". And I say this as someone who works in a dangerous environment. **** you, I'm keeping my phone on me at all times.

I'm going to guess your workplace isn't unionized because if I'm a shop steward and I see employees being fired immediately for having their phones on them while engineers walk around with theirs on them, it's not going to be a pleasant time.

Ah, so unions allow you to basically skip a rule that you don't like...

Gotcha..

And unions wonder why people hate them sometimes...

Do engineers use heavy equipment? When I managed at a hub you can bet your ass none of my workers would be allowed to have a phone on them or wear buds.

Nobody can have phones where I work (security), but the company will pay for a 1-way pager (yes, those still exist!) if you need it, so you always know who’s about to have a kid, cause those are they only people who are carrying.

It's unionized. I should have said, we can carry our phones with us, but we can't use them in the warehouse. We can use them on the production floor if it's necessary for the job. Which it often is.

But that's also because it's an electronics thing. If you want to blow up the building, sure, carry your phone around. Engineers and maintenance techs (also union) get special phones that are rated for explosive atmospheres.

In the warehouse is purely a safety thing in most areas. There are two sections that require explosion proof phones. But when you've got people zooming around warehouse in fork trucks, that's just a company policy. You can't have your phone on you

I carry a phone in propane storage and distribution plants all the time. Never really in a class 1 div 1 area though.

Yeah, these are all c1d1 areas. We generally classify our open handling areas without bubbles and just do blanket classification. Easier to prevent mistakes.

So my old company's HR apparently hasn't offboarded me at all, even though my last day was almost a month ago. I'm still listed as active in AD and in Workday. Meanwhile, I got a planned PTO payout and my last check and another unexplained direct deposit? But no word on COBRA as I'd requested. No word on the full PTO payout (they owe me almost 400 hours worth, less the 40 or so they payed out as initially planned). No word on my 403b rollover.

I was referred to a VP of HR/payroll and none of the phone numbers she lists in her own email sig are active numbers. I emailed her and cc'd my old bosses.

It's not unbelievable, in fact it's incredibly believable. But do I have health insurance? My new policy starts in 11 days but I really don't want a lapse (not to mention the "I hope I'm not in a car wreck). I'm so glad to be out of that company. My old, little hospital was absolutely fine. The new parent company can't do anything right.

You have a grace period to elect cobra coverage, so if your new one kicks in during that period (and i forget how long it is), you can game the system a bit and wait to see if you need it before opting in. If you don't, you saved yourself a decent chunk of change.

I think the "it's dangerous to have your phone on you" is a bit overblown. Especially since nearly every delivery company and airline issues electronic devices to their workers these days. At my company it's actually required to have your dispatch device with you if you're driving a vehicle, and those are just as distracting as a phone.

Ear buds are just a non-starter at my job since hearing protection is required.
