Antiwork 2: No One Is Getting A Pay Raise

Ah, so unions allow you to basically skip a rule that you don't like...

Gotcha..

And unions wonder why people hate them sometimes...
Equality and fair treatment is a strange concept some times. If it's dangerous for one class to have their phones with them, it's dangerous for every class.

I think the "it's dangerous to have your phone on you" is a bit overblown. Especially since nearly every delivery company and airline issues electronic devices to their workers these days. At my company it's actually required to have your dispatch device with you if you're driving a vehicle, and those are just as distracting as a phone.

Ear buds are just a non-starter at my job since hearing protection is required.

PIVs kill around a hundred on the job each year and are a huge source of serious injuries. And distracted driving on the roads is a massive problem.

So no I don't think it's overblown.

You have a grace period to elect cobra coverage, so if your new one kicks in during that period (and i forget how long it is), you can game the system a bit and wait to see if you need it before opting in. If you don't, you saved yourself a decent chunk of change.

Oh yeah? So here are the dates:

March 28th - last day at old job.
Final pay period was two weeks later (bi-weekly pay sucks) and was obviously only for 1 week's worth of pay.

April 1st - new job starts
May 1st - new insurance begins

I had planned to pay a month COBRA (estimates are around $900 I think?). So if old company doesn't bother to do anything until this week (or later), I could still pay that fee and not have an insurance lapse?

With my wife we planned her to leave her job as close to the first day of the month as possible. That helps because most insurance runs through the end of the month of your employment. I would think that if you left 3/28, April isn't covered.

that said, we opted for COBRA for the rest of the year to preserve fertility benefits. Which are going to blow the cost of cobra out of the water and preserve my fertility benefits should we need them.

You have 60 days from the later of the date you're given the official notice or the date your coverage ends to elect to enroll in COBRA coverage

So in theory, if your new coverage starts May 1, you can wait to see what happens and if you don't need to use health insurance between the end of your old job and the start of your new one, you can save yourself $900. If you get injured April 30, you can still enroll in COBRA thereafter since you're still in your 60-day election period and be covered.

I don't like the fact that your old company hasn't done anything to start that process, though. Means if you need to elect there will likely be a ton of hassle to do so. But even if the time started March 28th, you're only 33 or so days out by the time your new insurance kicks in either way.

I can have mine at my job, but it's more to contact the supervisor in times of crisis. Lately, I've had a resident elope, one head butt me, and one shove the manager in a carbon monoxide drill.

Thanks! I suspect I won't hear anything from old company for at least several days. What's even more fun is that there isn't a single HR contact number for the parent company, they refer you directly to your "home" hospital... but I don't have one of those since I worked directly for the parent.

So, my workload has been pretty light so far in 2024. Not complaining as I've worked here long enough to know how things ebb and flow. Plus I'm dealing with my mom now (recently diagnosed with Alzheimers). Anyway, last Tuesday I have a call with my manager and one of my co-workers to talk about two new things I'll be working on. One is working with our Foundation - our company has made a substantial donation to fund a house for teens experiencing homelessness with one of our grantees. It's the second one we've done and there will be some local dignitaries for the ribbon cutting - potentially the Mayor of Boston along with the president and CEO of our company. It's a pretty high profile event and I was happy to be asked.

I reach out to connect to a couple of people in our Foundation, connect with one of the girls on our PR team trying to get a handle on what I need to do. Some work has already been done. In all honesty, there's too many cooks in this kitchen, but that's typical. Anyway, today I got two separate meeting makers about this event, one of which is with yet another person working on this (not sure why) and then a third meeting request from my manager with her and same co-worker for tomorrow morning at 9:30 to talk about it. I have a nagging feeling she's going to give most of the work on this back to my co-worker as she just finished up a huge project and now she has some capacity and my role will be diminished somehow. I have no idea if someone complained about me (doubtful) or I'm not working fast enough. Who the hell knows. It's annoying because we had a big team meeting last week and all my teammates have been working on things that are really interesting and everyone got high fives, etc. and I mentioned how things have been a little light for me but I just finished up a very fun project and hardly got any feedback. And then I had my 1x1 and my boss jokingly starts out by saying "Never say in a team meeting you have no work" Insert rolling eyes here. Now I have a cool, important thing to work on and I feel like it's going to be pulled away from me.

In the same 1x1 I gave her a rundown of a few things and one is this very cool large onsite event that I've managed the past two years. It's not till October but I've already set up weekly status calls and she made some comment about not spending too much time on it now since it's April. That comment threw me a bit. I might bring that up to her. What the hell does she want me to work on?

Then I type something like this up, roll my eyes and realize whatever. They pay me good money to do practically nothing. At this stage, I've decided not to make any waves (though I am glad I come on here to vent).

Update from the recruiting inquiry I got a few weeks back. Ended up going through the whole process, had the final round interview today, and impressed them. This company is a bigger shop and not a pure-play firm, so I don't expect the culture to be the same, but from what I've gathered it's decent. Now we see if I'm really their guy, or if another candidate is cheaper.

Just signed their second offer. They tried to come in a little low, but magically came up with another $15k/yr after I pushed back this morning.

I'll let my boss know on Friday. It's the first time I feel sad to leave a job, so I hope the new shop works out.

We're here for that. It's good to vent.

humans should all be required to have a relief valve and exercise it as often as they need.

I’ve now not worked for seven months, cannot believe how fast time goes.

I’ve passed four exams in that time to gain some skills and confidence in the new industry I want to work in. Joining some clubs for networking. And networking is going to be how I get a job.

it’s scary but I’m reading the 20 minute networking meeting to hone my story. I have some good connections and I need to be ready to exercise them.

im on unemployment now and while I understand why and how it works, it can be frustrating. They just want you applying to jobs all day and getting employed. I’ve got advanced degree and online apps get you nowhere. But I have to track how I’m spending 40 hours a week searching.

I hate this part but keep telling myself I will find something I like.

now if only I can sell my house. I’m doing hospice care for a dog, my best buddy. Trying to sell my house without anyone to help (other than realtor) - and unemployed and looking for work. Three stressful things all at once

Geez DGF - sending positive vibes that something will open up for you soon. Not knowing what you do or are looking for, are there any opportunities for contract work? Short term assignments can also be a good way to network.

Update from my previous post - so I met with the girl on my team who had given me a shout out in our big team meeting last week. She and I were trying to connect on Friday about me walking her through how to do something. She says "Did [my manager] or [my manager's manager] talk to you?" And she could tell by my reaction that they had not. They told her I could take care of something for her, which I would've done anyway, but it's weird they told her that I would do this one thing. But then she mentioned how she noticed that no one responded to what I said in the team meeting like they did for everyone else and thought that was awful. I almost hugged her. Because it gave me a little bit of validation that I wasn't the only one that noticed.

Hang in there DGF.

To change the tone a little, what overall industry are you moving to? Quite the adventure to change like that- scary and exciting at the same time.
