Americans-Canadians

Re: Americans-Canadians

UCONN FAN: Why do you hate Colie Campbell? I agree about getting rid of Bettman. No non-athlete should be allowed to run any professional league. He looks ridiculous when he goes onthe ice. Colin Campbell though I have the upmost respect for -- he at least played the game and has brought the game to new better levels with the new rules, along with the head of refs. Some of the referees are getting too old and should retire but I suspect that would be discriminatory.

I hate him because of the way he choses to enforce the rules. He is not consistant at all his judgements. I think pro hockey would better off without him.

The person you want for Colin's job is the OHL person, Branch. OHL has the best and most consistent discipline enforcement methods. They have lead in this area by example for years. Many of their early adopted procedures were eventually adopted in the NHL and AHL.

While Branch is a good man, it's a whole different ball of wax, the OHL and the NHL. ;) Money....

I think what we are looking for is consistency. Branch has proven time and time again to be tough and consistent.

If money sways the decision making for discipline, than the system is in trouble period, no matter who is in charge.

I excerpted the following from the link above......

"David E. Branch (born November 27, 1948 in Bathurst, New Brunswick) has served as the Commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) since September 15, 1979, and as the President of the Canadian Hockey League since 1996............Branch attended the University of Massachusetts on a hockey scholarship."

Anyone else find this humorous?

Ya..funny. He learned how to play hockey in Canada (at least I hope he did or this is all shot to hell) and he got a scholarship in the States. Great accomplishment! :)

What? Seems pretty typical to me.

What I find ridiculous, is that Bettman heads up the NHL and doesn't know the first thing about hockey. He's an American who came to the game from basketball. How is he remotely qualified? Not only that but he's a pompous windbag.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Just want to be sure you're ONLY talking about Bettman? LOL There isn't some hidden anti-American sentiment here, is there?

LOL. Maybe you're feeling just a little bit guilty or something, eh?...do you resemble that remark?! ;)

Unless you have a Napoleon complex too I don't think you need to worry about it. In actual fact, some of my favourite relatives happen to be American :)

Are they hockey players? :D

I agree with you 100% Trill. This guy is NOT good for hockey. He cares only about the marketing of the game and not the game itself. Many of his rules (see instigator penalty in the last 5 of a game) have hurt the game. I could go on for hours on just how bad this man is for hockey.

DON CHERRY FOR COMMISSINOR!

Re: Americans-Canadians

Just what the team needs, more support. In fact, pretty well all over the league it's needed. Spread the word, and get out there and support this great brand of hockey people! Good job OSU! :)

CanHockGuy, I'm a tad late responding, but needless to say, I am already looking forward to the women's hockey season around here. It would be really cool if all the Olympians could come back for a game and show off their medals for us (ie. have a "Tessa Bonhomme Night" or a "Lisa Chesson Night"). Might be a little more difficult for Emma Laaksonen to get over here from Finland. Minttu Tuominen has three more seasons with us, so I guess every night for the next three seasons could be "Minttu Night." She was a freshman this past season. The OSU Ice Rink only holds 1,000 people but it's a great little barn to watch a game in. I was going to say something about selling out the games if any of the Olympians came back, but then, the women's games are free, so there are no "sellouts."

It's better for atmosphere when a building is full, no matter what the size. There is nothing worse than a cavernous place that's empty. Like I said before, this D-1 hockey is pretty good, and it only gets better when there are a lot of people around. ;)

It's definitely a better atmosphere when the place is packed. I have been to games in the old rink when it was packed and the place rocks pretty good when it's full of people. Not to get off the subject of women's hockey since this is a women's forum, but I know exactly what you mean by the "cavernouse place that's empty." That was the case with our men's team this past season. They had a rough season and folks didn't come out. They averaged 3,000 and change in a building that holds 17,500 for hockey. I went to a bunch of games and the atmosphere was horrible. Hopefully the new men's coach can turn that around.

Re: Americans-Canadians

Americans and Canadians seem to be great partners in the development of hockey. The competitive spirit within both nations can only carry the sport to new levels of greatness. Our neighbors to the south are getting better by the minute, and I for one am looking forward to new challenges to keep us on top. It won't be easy. Other nations need to push us further. Talk of the support to the CWHL can only enhance interest. If this holds water, then we finally may be on our way. :)
