Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

On a happier note, Matt Carle was named First Team All-Decade at CHN.

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2010/01/12_chnall-decade.php

Gwodedecky and Mannino were close to making the team, but were edged out by Jerry York and Jeff Lerg, respecitively.

Didn't we do something like this over the summer?
But we have a bye week so....
2000-2009
Two obvious choices are Carle and Mannino. Next two names that come to my mind are Stastny and Bozak, even though they only played two years(more like a year and a half for Bozak). Butler. Gauthier. Caldwell. more?

Btw, CHN is going with the stories of the decade next. DU's 2004 championship and the Maine's 6 on 3 in the FF final game have to be at the top.

Bozak recalled by Toronto Maple Leafs - slated to play on the top line with Phil Kessel.

That team is really reeling and hopefully Tyler can help make a difference. I would look for massive player changes on the Leafs before next season.

Good luck to Tyler! I know he had some bad luck with sickness, injuries, and Maple Leaf malaise at the start of the season, but I hope he has a good showing this time.

Got this e-mail from one of our faithful supporters today.

Needed Cal Sandbeck/LexHudson and Vince Magnan out there for Saturday night

Ah the memories of Sandbeck and Hudson facing off against Paul Holmgren and Russ Anderson of the Gophers and Vinny and the rest of the DU team taking on the whole Michigan State team in the pre-game warm-up.

To ALL DU Fans, I would like to say thank you for the great experience i had at last weekends series, its nice to know there are actually classy hockey fans out there. It was my first games outside of Alaska and i appreciate that no one gave me any crap about my team after any of the games. Good luck the rest of the season and Go Pioneers (except when you play my Seawolves).

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Wisconsin has 375,000+ undergrad alumni and probably 1 million+ fans.

DU has 50,000+ undergrad alumni and maybe 100,000 fans. :)

Here's what I know:

DU has 115,000 living alumni, 50% or of whom are on the front range.

DU has about 4,000 hockey season ticket holders with various packages

Our average hockey attendence is about 5,800 per game

Our average basketball attendance is about 1,500-2,000 per game

Our average gymnastics attendance is 1500 per meet

Lacrosse averages about 1500 per game

Our average local TV audience for hockey games is about 15-20,000 fans or about a 1% share of the Denver audience at that time. This would not include those fans from outside FSN-RM's service area, watching remotely.

This knuckle dragging neanderthal loved that stuff! Imagine a day when players policed the game, where cheap shots were dealt with and agitators/**** disturbers weren't half as brave.Accountability, what a concept. :D

Interesting stats. Obviously your figures include DU's grad schools, plus all the schools that DU has "taken over" in past years.

Interesting that Gymnastics draws the same as Hoops. Shows what a great job the Gymnastics program has done marketing and sustaining themselves.

Almost all the Gymnastics fans are little girls and their families. They do a lot of razzle dazzle to keep them all entertained - player intros look like Las Vegas, (smoke, strobe lights) and loud Radio Disney-ish music programmed for pre-teens.

So you're saying they identified their target market and set about marketing to that core group to build the audience. :D

Thats clearly what the DU basketball program has not done up till recently.

Dude Love will soon be attending DU Gymnastics meets.

It also helps when your products are cute, little girls-next-door who also win enough to be a top 20 national program.

I wonder who the audience really is for DU hoops. They loose all the DU students for the first half of the season and all the non-league games to winter break, so it's hard to start with students. They had about 250 students on the last weeknight game with New Orleans and about 50 on Sunday afternoon for WKU, but the WKU overall crowd was over 3,300 which is about double the normal crowd. Now that the NFL season is over in Denver, I think DU will start to get some casual fans in the door. They have done a some outreach to school groups, but most of those kids don't add much atmopshere. If they keep winning, I think you'll see crowds of 3,000 become the norm, and if they get into the NCAA tourney and (god forbid), win a game, then we're looking at 4,000 per game and more for big name teams. It's a slog. Maybe they could do some cross promotion with the Nuggets...

You all may find this hard to believe, but nobody messed with DU in my day. Possibly because of very tough dudes like Cliff Koroll, Tom Miller, Jim Shires, Tim Gould, Tom Gilmore and many others. Oh, yes, there was a red headed guy, name of Magnuson, and nobody messed with him, ever.

I believe :D

Also back in the day there was a lot less stickwork and I rarely recall any players being checked from behind. Most checks were good hard solid hits that both players knew were coming. The players kept their sticks down. Most facial cuts were from deflected pucks not high sticks.

Gould and Magnuson almost looked like Salazar and Colborne when they were on the ice together.:D

Btw, Ruegsegger and Wiercioch were Nominated for WCHA players of the week.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Bozak just got an assist on Toronto's 2nd goal. They lead Carolina 2-1 in the 2nd. Sutter just tied the game at 2. Tyler is +1.

And no checking in the offensive zone. That's why those plus/minus numbers for the Miller line (Miller, Koroll, Shires) were so hard to believe in '67-68. Coming down the stretch, after the loss to the Russians, in 14 straight regular season wins, that line scored 33 goals and allowed 2!

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

bump!! I can't believe we have another weekend without DU hockey, ****!!! I guess we should be completely healthy... We will miss Wrenn and Ryder, but we get Donovan and Nutini back. I hope Nutini is all better, he was turning into my favorite defenseman. So what's the deal with Sat. night? Can we not travel with all four of these guys?
