Burgdorf started drawing No. 1 matchups in February and was a lock-down defenseman for a top five team by April, but his performances in wins over Villanova, Carolina and Drexel all nationally televised — allowed unfamiliar fans to see just how important Burgdorf was to Denver's stifling defense.
1. Zach Miller, A/M, Denver (38G, 19A in 18 games)
It's amazing that Miller was not voted a first- or second-team All-Big East selection, yet when compared to his peers in the 2014 freshman class, and historically, he's a deserving selection as the top freshman of the year. Going back the last three seasons, Case Matheis had 52 points last year, Ryan Walsh had 60 in 2012 and Nicky Galasso had 56 points as a freshman in 2011 (and Jordan Wolf had 50). Miller's 59 points are even more valuable than their volume suggests — his ability to play attack or run out of the box gave Matt Brown's offense another option, one that helped Denver advance to the Final Four.
