Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

What recruits does Bill Tierney have coming in as freshman or transfers for the 2014-2015 lacrosse season? Thanks for any substantive information on the subject.

T says best class ever. Star is Bromberry from the Hill Academy. Look at laxpower.com for complete list. We win it all next year. Bromberry played at Hill with our Zach Miller.

Loss of poise in the second quarter, against the top-seeded team, made it nearly impossible to come back to win this one. 95% of scoring returning next year. Eventually, the Pioneers will be able to turn the corner in the Final Four. Tierney has put DU lax on the map and was a terrific "get." Here's hoping we'll shortly be able to say the same about Monty.

Way to go Pios.

Only negative talk yesterday was of Matt Brown getting poached. I don't think it happens because HC's don't get paid that much. Not sure what an assistant makes. If it happens, my guess is Michigan pulls trigger now.

Thanks for telling me about that site. Lots of info there. Glad to see a young man from my high school coming to play lacrosse for the Pioneers next year. And yes, with only a few significant losses through graduation, [and hopefully no unforeseen attrtion], the Pioneers should be highly regarded in preseason polls heading into the 2014-2015 season. With two quarterfinal games in the NCAA tourney scheduled to be played at Sports Authority Field next spring there could be lots of "home cooking" for the Pioneers. Bill Tierney has most certainly helped place Denver amidst the national title contenders on an annual basis. I look forward to next season.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Shoot...I really thought this was the team that was going to win DU it's 30th D-1 national title. The way they were playing the last few weeks, they really looked unstoppable. However, we weren't playing the #1 team in the country in those previous games, either. So they needed to give an A game, and I think they gave a B game. Key things seemed to be: 1) goalie needed to make a couple more outstanding saves in the first half, and needed to stop that relative softie, too. I don't think DU was going to win this game with average goaltending. 2) It's tough enough to win faceoffs against that Duke guy...when you win one, you can't give up a turnover like passing to a guy that isn't looking--that's a killer for a possession team like DU; 3) Zach Miller played OK, and had a highlight reel goal, but he seemed pretty distracted in the first half, and didn't give DU that extra threat that they needed against a good team like Duke 4) the missed opportunity in the 2nd half, where DU had a shot right in front of the net to tie it up at 11 (I think), and missed....that could have given Denver a huge shot of momentum to put Duke away. But I give Duke credit, they played really well, and did a great job putting the nails in the coffin with the last 3 goals of the game.

So...two trips to the final four without a win is fine...after three, it kinda becomes a "thing." Let's hope the team can take it to the next level next year---sounds like the pieces are in place to be an awesome team. Great season, DU!! I'm sad that they didn't advance, but it was fun to watch this year. Should be even better next year.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

I hear you Pablo. Now it's wait until next year (wipes tear from cheek)

But Tonje did finish tied for 10th which was the lowest score for a golfer playing "unattached". Her threesome came just before USC and Duke. A little tv time on the NCAA coverage putting on 16th and 17th. At the 2:03 and 2:14 mark and that's hours not minutes.

What high school? It's great being a factor in lax and hockey almost every year.

How about some hockey talk?
>Geoff Paukovich is now a free agent since the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers are homeless. Plan to be back for 2015-16 season.
>Patrick Mullen signed 1 year, 2 way contract with Ottawa
> Joe Colborne is a restricted free agent and hopes to stay in Calgary, He switched from center to wing last season

Since Monty announced everyone is coming back, I took a look back as far as the 2003-04 season and this is the only year when the only changes to the roster are graduating seniors and incoming freshmen

Not including unsigned recruits#, as it stands today.
the 2014-15 roster includes 3 goalies, 8 defensemen and 17 forwards.
By class: 4 freshmen, 1 redshirt freshmsn, 10 sophomores, 6 juniors and 7 seniors

# 2 status unknown Mostrom and Hillman

Departure History from 2003-04 to the present
2003-04 6 seniors 1 transfer and ? McConnell and Rogers
2004-05 7 seniors 1 early departure(Skinner)
2005-06 2 seniors 2 early departures (Carle and Stastny) and ? McMorris, S. Cook and J. James
2006-07 7 seniors and 2 early departures (Paukovich and Dingle) and 1 WHL midseason and Seabrook who was lost in the summer
2007-08 4 seniors and 1 early departure (Butler) and 1 Trottergate
2008-09 3 seniors and 1 early departure (Bozak)
2009-10 6 seniors and 3 early departures (Cheverie, Colborne, Wiercioch) and 1 unknown reason, but unforgettable " Norwegian Nightmare"
2010-11--7 seniors and 1 early departure (Donovan) and 1 WHL midseason
2011-12--5 seniors and 3 early departures (D. Shore, Zucker, B. Bennett) and 1 suspended forever/transfer and 1 retired due to injury

Ty for the list. Our 2012-2013 list reminds me of Ky. Basketball

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

The wheels continue to turn at CC. Eric Rud was interviewed for the head coaching job which went to Mike Haviland. Knowing that he would no longer be part of the CC program, Rud applied for and secured the head coaching spot for the Saint Cloud women's team. Haviuland now needs at least one assistant coach--and likely more since he'll want to select his own staff--so it will be interesting to see if Steve MIller will apply for an assistant's job on Haviland's staff.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Congrats to Wes Berg for making the NCAA Lacrosse All Tournament Team, the only player not from Duke(6) or Notre Dame(3).

Congrats to Erik Adamson who won the Elite 89 award which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. Erik's 3.89 topped the field.

Some interesting comments on Pio alums who are NHL free agents from isportsweb http://isportsweb.com/nhl-teams/

Islanders--Who should stay for next season
Matt Donovan

Much like de Haan, Donovan was another rookie defenseman that made a successful leap to the NHL this season. So successful, in fact, that he was named to the USA team headed to this spring’s IIHF World Championships in Belarus.
Along with standout Travis Hamonic, de Haan and Donovan, if resigned, could be the cornerstones of the Islanders blueline for years to come.

Wild--Who should go for next season
Jason Zucker

This one is my bold prediction. I believe Jason Zucker will be playing in a different uniform come next season. The 22-year-old speedster is exciting when he gets a chance to play with the big club, but he is very erratic. Zucker is limited in his ability to play only a top-6 forward role and is a liability on defense. As a restricted free agent, he will likely be resigned, but I believe he will be traded before next season.

Every fan loves to watch JZ play. He is exciting, enertaining and at times simply electrifying. He certainly doesn't belong on a checking or grind line. As I recall Mike Yeo had commented on Jason's lack of consistency and defense on more than one occasion. (He must know all the flight attendants on the Minneapolis to Iowa flights as often as he made that trip.)

Who should or shouldn’t return for the Colorado Avalanche?
Paul Stastny

http://isportsweb.com/2014/05/21/shouldnt-return-colorado-avalanche/
If he isn't signed by July 1, will the Avs get in a bidding war? Will Stats give the Avs a hometown discount? This is more than a paragraph

Ten years since the DU hockey title

Kudos to Mile High Sports! Thanks for the memories.

This is a must read

Wow. My lasting memory was watching the semi-final game in Houston as my partner and I were trying to do the news. She was a Clarkson fan whom I'd converted for the occasion. The Bulldogs had gone undefeated that year (with only one tie) when leading after two. So Bonnie and I are trying to pay attention to our work and we look up and DU gets one. We look up again. And DU gets another one. And then another one. And then another one. Holy moly! We're in the title game! It's a wonder I didn't shout out "holy sh*t" on the air.
