Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Places that are walkable to the arena are Crimson & Gold, Jordans, Spanky's and Renegade. The first three are more pre-game-ish types of places. Campus Lounge about a mile north on University is also a traditional DU hockey hangout--owned by a former DU hockey player. But I love Renegade--a small place with an awesome selection of beers, and really good pizzas. Can't go wrong there. Hope you have fun in Denver.

If you're coming out for Beer Fest, agreed that you can't go wrong with Renegade. The Pioneer is also walkable, on the opposite side of campus from the Ritchie Center. Probably a better environment for post-game than Renegade or C&G, I've never been a big fan of Jordan's. For late night (until 3am) or post Beer Fest, check out Biker Jim's Dogs, I think lunch from the carts is the best way to go. Euclid Hall will be another great place to be for beer and eats, but it will probably be pretty packed this weekend. 5280.com and Westword are good restaurant references. Hope you have a great time.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

A little of all four? Bad ice is not exactly normal all the time, but the bad ice early and late in the season is common at AF, CC, and DU. Although the summer was not has hot as it has been in the past, the warm temperatures wreck havoc on the ice. With the high altitude is how solar it gets and warm even in autumn, you'll be freezing in the shade and sweating in the sun. One good thing with the altitude is the dryness. Until the NHL cracked down, even the Avalanche was known to have crappy ice during those times.

I one time had the opportunity to talk to the facility manager at the old barn in Tampa Bay and when he brought up the subject of ice, he said either you had to be lucky up north in the right climate or pay a huge amount of money.

Heard through a friend of a friend... of a friend... from a guy that works in facilities at Pepsi Center thought it might have something to do with chiller capacity, Pepsi Center had 2 chillers for their 1 sheet, whereas the Ritchie Center had one chiller for 2. But wasn't it just last year that a new chiller was brought in at close to $1M? The second one would stay in place as backup. In my totally unqualified observations in skating on both, the ice in Joy Burns is significantly harder than the ice in Magness. It's been discussed that being a multi-use arena hurts, as well. But yeah, lots of factors maybe at play. I've always wondered if it may be secretly a little bit on purpose, like a baseball team keeping the grass a little bit longer to slow things down and throw the other team off. Except it doesn't seem to have done much for DU.

Same Coach
Same System
Only 4 freshman.
I think the same captain?
Same Conference

Strength is in our blue-line and goalie. We return 5 starting defenseman and have two supposedly solid incoming (one is actually a soph. transfer from Providence ) blue-liners. Marotta is most likely the starter in net and played very well for us last yr. Up front we need to diversify our production, as last year saw us rely almost entirely on Mike Collins (had a great yr with 38 pts and 32 in conf.), next best pt total was one of our D-men (Heywood). Need some other guys to step up this year. Possess a lot of size, heard a rumor that we have the tallest team in D-1 this yr, but counter it with some speed guys, Scotti, Myers, Bates and Bahe come to mind. Have a few friends making the trip out there, and know they are looking forward to it.

From FearTheWarrior
Canisius is the tallest, Merimck is 8th and 5th oldest.

LaLeggia and Arnold wearing A's tonight per the line chart.

And Zajac playing LW on the 2nd line with Levin and Shore

Yes, that 2nd line is confusing.
And Arnold wearing an A that too.
Two things I didn't know or realize about him.
• Named the Green Bay Gamblers' Unsung Hero in 2010 and 2012
• Participated in the Little League World Series in 2003 and 2004
May not be a scoring threat, but a big body and grit. Breakout year?

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Made the trip out from Massachusetts yesterday and kudos to Denver. The city has been great and the beer is superb. Despite the low attendance numbers was extremely impressed with the barn you guys call home. With the hall of fame, history of the team and campus as a whole DU has it figured out. Also I talked to some of your fans tonight and you guys are a polite well versed crowd. Hopefully I can see Merrimack get the split tonight, but if not it has been a great experience.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

It's great to see the Pioneers get a win in the first game that counts, and it's awesome that the other Pioneers upset the #1 team in the nation (even if they were over-rated, a Sacred Heart win against a ranked team seems like kind of a big deal for them).

I wasn't able to watch or listen, or even to follow the score thread, but from reading back, it sounds like the DU offense actually looked pretty decent, but that the opposing goalie kept them in the game. Good to see Brittain with the shutout. My guess is that it will be December before we really have a good feel for this team, but 1-0 is a whole lot better than 0-1.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Viz you are 1-0 on the game thread starts so I defer to you for tonight's game. I will be joining you all later tonight as I am going upstate for dinner.
