Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Denver fans of a certain age will remember Andy Gambucci as a former player at CC and a college on ice offical. Today he was elected to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

He was hands down the best official of his day. Colorful, flamboyant and entertaining. His nephew Gary played for CC and old Andre didn't let the kid get away with squat. IMO, his election to the Hall is way overdue.

Matt Donovan scored his 1st NHL goal tonight in Isles 6-1 win over Coyotes. Congrats to Matt!

As I recall. DU fans were still all over him when he was on theice:p
Story in today's NY Daily New on Dono's 1st NHL goal. FYI DU with 9 players in the NHL right now: Donovan, Carle, Wiercioch, Bozak, Colborne, Stastny, Zucker, Bennett and D. Shore.

Also Peter Mannino loaned to Wheeling by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

Congrats to Matt! He has been paying his dues in Bridgeport and now shows he's ready for NHL. Go Isles!

Make that 10 Chris Butler--Colborne's teammate in Calgary

New updates for the alumni list.

BTW Larkin Jacobson's step father. Ruslan Fedotenko is "Back in the USSR"(sing along). Actually the Ukraine playing for Donbass HC in the KHL.

Question. Just bumped into one of UNB's assistant coaches (they got back to Fredericton last evening). He mentioned that he was surprised the "ice wasn't very good" at CC or DU. Is he right? Is that normal? Is is a high-altitude thing? Or just the time of year? I'm not trolling, just curious.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Hey guys, excited to trek out there for Mack-DU and the beerfest this weekend. Should be a good series. Any "must-do" bars, restaurants etc near the rink for pre and post game?

Sure DU fans were on him. That was part of his schtick. Lots of gestures, arm waving, lip flapping. But he called a good game--consistent and the same on both ends of the ice.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Drew Shore just sent to San Antonio as FL called up goalie Scott Clemmensen after Tim Thomas got hurt. Down to 8 in the NHL right now.

Drew was on the lineup card last night as right wing. Was that a bad sign?

He didn't dress in one game and was on the 4th line in the others. He can be sent down without going thru waivers. FL made a lot of late free agent signings of vets when new ownership took over. Most GMs and coaches like a veteran presence in the line-up. Drew will be back.

A little of all four? Bad ice is not exactly normal all the time, but the bad ice early and late in the season is common at AF, CC, and DU. Although the summer was not has hot as it has been in the past, the warm temperatures wreck havoc on the ice. With the high altitude is how solar it gets and warm even in autumn, you'll be freezing in the shade and sweating in the sun. One good thing with the altitude is the dryness. Until the NHL cracked down, even the Avalanche was known to have crappy ice during those times.

I one time had the opportunity to talk to the facility manager at the old barn in Tampa Bay and when he brought up the subject of ice, he said either you had to be lucky up north in the right climate or pay a huge amount of money.

Places that are walkable to the arena are Crimson & Gold, Jordans, Spanky's and Renegade. The first three are more pre-game-ish types of places. Campus Lounge about a mile north on University is also a traditional DU hockey hangout--owned by a former DU hockey player. But I love Renegade--a small place with an awesome selection of beers, and really good pizzas. Can't go wrong there. Hope you have fun in Denver.
